When the Griftball playlist was announced the forums filled up with 8 million Griftball threads.

As we all know the SWAT playlist is coming up on the 20th.

It would be nice if a sticky was made in the Halo 3 forum and all subsequent topics locked.

The same thing happened with steaktacular. If the description would have been added that read "Luke owes you a Steak dinner for winning slayer by 20 kills or more" much spam would have been eliminated.

So lets think of how we can eliminate spam before it happens.

Hello.

Its almost impossible to prevent these threads. There might be some system of eliminating this, but the majority of users don't read stickies. I agree, that something should be done, but doing this would be hard to prevent such.

Yeah spam is pretty bad but don't hesitate to use that Report button and wait for the mods to swoop in.

Sadly Sticky topics really don't have much impact (think about the forum rules and how many people actually know them). Perhaps if they gave threads a red title colour and held them at the top of the forum on the day (like the old stickies were) it would catch people's eye for a lot more effectively.

That might work Tom.

Don't know if they can code it in this fast though.

How about we have a Recent Topics display at the top of all forums, which just shows the most recent post and where it was posted whenever the page is refreshed in a larger display at the top of the forum. It doesn't matter what forum your in, it will be the most recent topic reply on b.net.

If you want to go farther, you could even make a filter for it for specific forums, or even a page dedicated to recent posts and hot topics that is linked to above every forum section.

Maybe you're right but these are skilled professionals, I'm sure they could cook something simple and effective up in 9 days.

Yep ^ Maybe.

Just when they do something as with my steaktacular example, it just needs a better description.

Of course I don't know what their going to do in the future, but make it where question s are less needed.

Twitter | Nothing

If you see anything that you think is spam or breaks the rules report it, because if everyone uses the feature it will work. I've seen a lot of threads get locked after its been reported so it definitely has an effect. Just make sure you use it.

I am a proud user of correct spelling and grammar.

I say they mention the sticky and consequences for not posting in that sticky in the News article on the home page, or they have a small section at the top of the forum labeled "Weekend Special." Under that would be the thread to post in for the SWAT playlist and after the weekend is over, the section would be removed.

Theres a nice idea. Putting it in the news section.

btw I have hit the report button up to 300+ times in a day before.

Makes my damn hand hurt.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I was thinking about asking the web-team for something just like that Tom. A sort of ultra sticky. Though I think that G33K's idea is just as good. I'd be happy with both/either.

Though something will need to be done in both the Halo 3 forum and the Optimatch. I planned on making a sticky as we drew nearer to SWAT's release. Though if another mod wants to do that of course feel free. Or if one of you wants to make a detailed thread explaining SWAT or what have you one of us can just pin that.

Hello.

Maybe, when you click Halo 3 Forum or any other forums, it will direct you to ALL the stickies, and it will force you to read all of them. Than, you no longer have to go through that process of reading. Whenever they want to update a sticky or make a new one, people will be directed back to the stickies page, and will be told that there are new stickies.

Just a thought. Its kind of odd, but it could possibly help.

its like a large force of win going through fusion, thus creating a chain reaction of a huge asplosion of win destroying any fail within its awesomeness.

One day we will learn to control and cultivate it. We will harness the byproducts of spam to help power the world.
It's brilliant.

Well, I have one idea, I could stop spamming. Actually, I almost never do, but evilcam is mad quick with the locks anyway.

Impressive evilcam! Really, I think that the new sticky format actually helped that a bit. It's nice being able to reference the side like that, and it's easier to reference the important topics that way. I took a minute to get used to it, but I think that was a step in the right direction.

There is truly no way to completely stop spam, but I do wish that people still had a little artistic flair to their posts, when they do. Fortunately, the Septagon, is generally great about it anyway.

Edit: Tom, that does sound cool...

Hello.

Yeah, overall the Septagon is pretty clean. Usually, its just people who don't use the search bar or people who post it in the wrong forum.

Its just the Halo 3 Forum. That place is crazy. I wonder how the new Forum Ninjas are handling it...

Anyways, there is no way to stop spam. Some people just do it for the fun of it. Its sad, but there may be a way to maintain it. Of course, we will never find a way to eliminate it. Just find ways to stop a percentage of spam.

  • 03.11.2008 5:50 PM PDT

It would be really useful if people were not able to post threads that have all caps titles.

AGREED, really, that's very annoying isn't it. That shouldn't be to hard to fix right? There is already a filter of sorts on the subject line right? I don't think you can link, or, I don't remember, but there are some things that you can't put in there I think.

That'd be a cool fix actually. I wonder if it can be implemented.

I don't see the big deal with all caps threads. It is easy enough to just plain ignore them. Making it against the rules just makes it all the more tempting to do it.

Ya we can't eliminate all spam of course. I am just proposing ways to try and stop some of the spam that has a 100% of happening.

If a ninja doean't make a sticky, then get ready for 8 million SWAT threads.

Also nice job clearing up optimatch lately with the duplicate threads.

Tom's idea would be cool, wonder if its possible to happen.

It can't happen. It is impossible to stop. But, I think they should make a "SWAT Discussion" topic and pin it.

Hello.

Well, yes. That would help a little bit, but you know that there is going to be threads about SWAT even with the sticky. Some people will use the sticky, though.
