Well guys, I'm stumped.

I recently upgraded from a 7900 GS KO (256mb) to an 8800 GTX. Much to my surprise, Halo is now running much choppier than it did before. I am running all the latest drivers for my hardware, also tried uninstalling/reinstalling and that didn't help either.

I am running at 1680 x 1050 with Vsync enabled and I am frequently getting drops to 30 FPS.

System specs are as follows:
E6400 OC'd to 2.66 ghz
Asus P5B deluxe
2x1 GB Mushkin DDR2 RAM
EVGA 8800 GTX
Seagate 750gb SATA
Silverstone Strider 750W

All my other, more recently released games; Gears of War, Half-life 2, Call of Duty 4, hell even Crysis perform as expected.

Any idea's?

What do you mean by choppy? do you mean low frame-rates or what?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

Yes and yes.

Uninstalled the game entirely and re-installed and still getting the same low frame rates.
I was getting much better performance with my 7900 GS KO which has 1/3 the memory and is a generation older than the 8800.

I'm thinking there might be a setting in the Nvidia control panel that might help.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Try lowering your resolution. I play at 1024x768 and get +100 FPS on almost every map with an 8800 GT.

This does not make sense. I did not upgrade my videocard so that I would be forced to run older games at lower resolutions.

This is one of the fastest cards available today and it won't run a 5 year old game smoothly at 1680 x 1050?

Gears of War is a much bigger resource hog and it runs locked at 62 fps with all settings maxed out at my native res. Crysis, which is known to bring PC's to their knees, runs reasonably well at 1280x1024 with high settings, roughly 30 FPS.

This is clearly not a problem with the card itself if all my other games are performing as expected. Has nobody else had something similar happen to them?

That's really strange. Have you tried the Nvidia forums?

Its a common issue with 8800's and halo PC. I believe that there is a version of drivers that fixes the issue but its an older version and I don't know what version it is.

I had the same problem, idk how I got it to work properly, but I did. you might want to re-check the dirvers, they up-dated em about a week ago I belive, or at least of the 8800 GT, idk about the GTX. sry.

Try playing around with it in the nvidia control panel. I wish my PC had those specs...

Did you happen to change your framerate (in-game) from the default, locked at 30 FPS, to Vsync of No Vsync? Even if you have a really good card, Halo's engine still keeps animations and such around 30 FPS, and makes it look like crap.

I have the same problem with my GTX. I get like 300 FPS and then jump down to like 15. Anyone who can solve this problem gets a major cookie.

I just realized we're talking Halo PC, not Halo 2. Turn off decals and you won't get the framerate drop.

I do believe the game will run at the highest framerate possible (if you have your settings on HPC rigged like that), but it won't be very consistent. And I do also believe that even though the game will run at a high framerate, the animations in the game are still locked at 30 =\

Thank you sir. Very much.
It makes absolutely no sense to me, but turning decals off gives me a 30+ FPS boost... smooth as butter again. Very weird.

Heh. Would've never thought of that. That's quite odd. My framerate is always locked at 30, anyway. And even if I change it from the locked 30 FPS, the game world will move smooth as butter, but the first person/character/vehicle operation animations will stay locked at 30. And the disparity between the two makes it look really damn weird =X

Yeah. You get choppy movement of players when you're moving too.
