IGN is reporting that the next xbox is likely to his shelves around Christmas 2005. This seems a little strange to me since that would only give Halo 2 about a year of cirrculation before the new hardware is available. Meaning that the much anticipated sequal to the best selling xbox game of all time could be obsolete in a year. I am of course assuming that the third Halo game would be a launch title for the next xbox. While this is a fairly large assumption, since nobody is talking about anything every close to Halo after Halo 2, I would have to think it is also a fairly safe bet that Microsoft would want to have another Halo to boost initial sales of the next xbox. Check out the article at IGN and let me know what you guys think.

I read in MCV that it had been pushed back to 2006.

EDIT: Sorry, that's the European date.

Do you really think a new Bungie game could be made that quick?

Anyway, believe it when old Bill tells us in person.

WoG

"...have a killatalor!"
ROMANS 1:18

We used to talk about this all the time in the pre-new hottness Underground. I always argued the same thing- the release of the nextBox (or whatever it's called) in 2005 would kill HALO 2 sales. Don't think so? Go see how much HALO costs at your local game store- probably still around 30 bucks. That game is almost 3 years old!!!

The reason this matters is because it's being reported that the next XBOX will NOT be backwards-compatible (i.e. you won't be able to play HALO 2 on the next XBOX). Why would the same company who is releasing HALO 2, cut it's revenue stream off by releasing a new console when it's pride and joy is still in it's prime revenue stream?

The only answer I can think of, is that they are just dead wrong about the backwards compatibilty. It doesnt make sense for Microsoft to not want to make extra money. I know people would still continue to buy HALO 2 for the regular xbox even if a new console was out, but at nowhere NEAR the pace that people were still buying HALO at the same point in time.

my 2 cents.

I personally believe that there is no way Halo 3, if there is one, will be available for the launch of the next Xbox( 2005 or 2006 ). I actually think that Microsoft is planning on RARE's Perfect Dark to be the FPS launch title. I also think that the next xbox will be compatable with current xbox hardware ( Halo 2 ). But like the gentleman said, wrong place to discuss all of this... and yes, I realize that statement is a contradiction to me replying:)

I agree. Microsoft and Bungie aren't stupid. It would be a rediculous idea to not make the Xbox 2 compatible with Xbox games! I am pretty sure it wil be "backwards compatible".

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but where in the hell would you prefer this post? It relates more to future Microsoft and Bungie projects than anything else. Sure the words "halo 2" are in the post, but the post is not specifically about halo 2. Again, I'm not trying to be rude...I just grow tired of everyone trying to be a moderator.

The Flood would be the most suitable board, as it is off-topic.

I'm not trying to be a mod. I, like yourself, am just trying to cover my a$$ so that the finger isn't pointed in my direction. This is one of those topics that straddles the fence... it could go either way. Topics, such as this, "usually" turn into "PS3 is going to suck" or "Microsoft is going to buy Nintendo" discussions, which have nothing to do with Bungie or Halo. I'm sorry if I offended you, but my comment wasn't meant in a mod. manner. It was more of an agreement with the previous post that this isn't the BEST place discuss such a topic because it's most likely going to turn into a flame war:)

I understand the importance of the Flood, but this is Bungie related. I mean no disrespect, but I think this post is exactly where it should be.

I also understand there is an insane amount of off-topic, spam, and flame-like posts running around with all of the new members, and I'm not about that at all. Maybe its just an old habit i've been around here for a while, and maybe i'm just used to putting things in the Underground.

Sorry I can't provide a link, but the issue of backwards compatability comes from the fact that the xbox 2 will be using a different chip company (Pentium to Intel i think? Whatever company makes the G5 chip is making the xbox 2 chip). The difference in architecture brings up a very big "how the heck do we make it backwards compatable?" One idea even includes just adding in the old chip into the xbox2. Do they want to make it backwards compatable? You bet. Are they willing to make us pay more to get it? Uh oh! :D

I sure hope so . . . . I want my Halo and Halo 2 on the next gen xbox . . .

I think the big question is, will Xbox 2 have a hard drive? I believe Xbox 2 will have some type of portable hard dirve system. It would be like a supper ipod that one could insert into the front of their Xbox 2... like a memory card on PS2, but it would have much larger storing capacity ( 10 - 100 gigs ). This hard drive could serve as the Xbox 2's main hard drive, and it could also serve as a portable media device. In other words, not only could it store game files/saves and xbox live content/downloads, but it could store movies and music. This would help to keep the Xbox 2's price down by solving the cost issues of having to put an internal hard drive in the console. The customers, you and I, would have to buy the hard drive as a seperate accesory... like the DVD playback kit. If you didn't have the portable hard drive, then you wouldn't be able to play the first Xbox's games. I'm sure if such a thing were to happen, then there would be different sizes ( 10 -100 gigs ), styles, and function drives to choose from. For example, the base hard drive may just serve as a small 10 gig hard drive, while the top of the line hard drive may have a 100 gigs, a head phone jack for listing to your stored music, and a small LCD built into it for movies on the go. It may even be able to serve as a portable gaming device... that is highly doubtfull seeing as how Microsoft has been quoted as saying that they have no plans to enter into the portable gaming device arena.
This would be great. Imagine going to a friend's house to play Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero, and Splinter Cell 5. He's doesn't have these games, but he has an Xbox 2. Instead of having to start all over in each game on his Xbox 2, or having to bring your whole system to his house, you would only have to pop out your portable hard drive and everything that is on your Xbox 2 would be accessable on you friend's Xbox 2.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think this would be a good idea for Xbox 2:)

I completely agree with the larger portable storage device theory, but I think you might be off on the size by a bit. Isn't the current Xbox hard drive 5 gigs? Most people probably never even came close to using the full storage capacity of their Xboxes, so 100 gigs might be a bit excessive. It will also be interesting to see what the controllers look like since there is so much debate over the current controllers.

The new Xbox would be great to have sooner but I think it should be pushed back simply because of Halo's mighty power and need to be out for a long time.

  • 06.17.2004 10:43 AM PDT

The reason I used such big specs for the portable hard drive is because of a report I read on teamxbox.com about a month or two ago. The report was about a company ( Can't remember their name ) that Microsoft has ties/contracts with, who claimed to have produced a 50 -100 gig portable hard drive the size of a 1.44mb floppy. It sounded alot like what Microsoft might be looking to use for Xbox 2. I also think that the content on the next generation Xbox will require much more space than the current Xbox hard drive can provide. Your probably right, 100 gigs may be stretching it, but I could see a 50 gig hard drive as practical.

Seriously? The size of a diskette? If you could find the article I'd like to read it because a storage device with that much capacity and yet still so small would be incredible.

If a game could be advanced that quickly, it would have to have some kind of frame in place... something that has been made as the outline... or prototype...

... like Marathon.

2005 is the estimated release date, has been for 6 months now. The launch title will be Dark Sector, was stated 6 months ago.

  • 06.18.2004 3:05 PM PDT

It has also been stated that Dark Sector won't be exclusive to Xbox 2. Playstation 3 will also have it. Most ported games are crap, the exceptions being "most" Ubi soft and EA games, to name a few. Hopefully XNA will change that for Xbox 2:)

Isn't Dark Sector more of an action title... sort of like a futuristic Splinter Cell? I'm more interested in FPS, such as R.A.R.E.'s Perfect Dark, that are exclusive to Xbox 2.

I won't believe it until I hear it from the actual XBox company. They even said that they are upgrading the current console, they didn't say much about a new console, I couldn't even find info about it. Even if there will be a new console, Microsoft is not dumb. They are not gonna make the same mistakes as Sega and leave out anything. They're gonna see what was its flawand fix it and make it ten times better. I believe that we as XBox fans determine the road for this company. What I mean is we get what we ask for.

I think that if they do make it backwards compatible, they should build a graphics program into the system that enhances the older games, because by then Halo's graphics will eventually show its age.
