Subject: Bungie.net doesn't work with IE8

Posted by: Bluesman
Also, a few of us were talking during matchmaking and Halo: Reach is definitely going to be, not a first person shooter, not a third person shooter, but a second person shooter. Bungie is going to revolutionize the way you watch other people play games.

Does anyone else encounter intermittent errors while using Firefox? Occasionally (maybe 1 in 10 times I visit bnet) the page will load and then just crap out - can't click on anything, all other FF windows crash as well. It's no big deal, just a tad annoying. I've also encountered what can only be described by an interwebz newbz like me as lag in with the drop down menus, wherein I have to wait a minute for the dropdowns to "catch up" with my rollovers.

Firefox is just a terrible, terrible browser. That being said I'm willing to try their beta if they have one out.

Firefox 2's script engine is just not very fast, and it is a gigantic memory hog that will eventually crash if you leave it running. It is mostly a good browser otherwise, but the script engine and memory are deal breakers for me personally.

I hear Firefox 3 is much better in the memory usage dept., but I don't know if the script engine is any faster. Bungie.net uses a LOT of javascript.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Similar issue occures with Opera, my personal favorite browser. It seems to pick up most of the java scripting, but certain things are just a tick out of place. Having created sites before, I know there is no real solution to this, concidering you have to make the site work for the most used browser, or suffer your father's fate, you will. There are some tweaks and tips you can use in IE8 that will make your Bungie browsing a more pleasurable experience, but for now, there are alternate links that will allow you to get where you need to go.

Can't say I know off had whether this is a issue on the top of the webteam's list, but I'm sure that its something they will address eventually.

From what I've read Firefox 3 is going to be less of a resource hog than even Opera. It's about time! I remember when Fireroxz used extreme low amounts of resources. Although all of my plugins prolly don't help with the resources. Anyways, I've been hooked on fox for a few years now. Especially with the IE tab plugin.

I've done alot of reading and using firefox 3 for some time now and it seems to finally be working way better in Beta 4. I know memory performance and usage is way better and that makes me happy. as for the scripting alot of stuff seems to work better but I haven't tested that out.

Way to go! In my opinion, IE7 is the best browser. Firefox is far too customizable and gets rather cluttered. To be honest, I'd never heard of IE8 before I saw this thread; hopefully, Microsoft will soon come up with a full version that does support Bungie.net.

Right now I am using the Beta for Firefox 3 and the memory usage is definitely down compared to 2. I haven't seen any significant changes in the speed of the script engine. Javascript seems to load and work at the same speed for me.

I haven't noticed any bugs using Bungie.net with the beta so far either though, which is good news.

Yes, it is, finally. My pc is rarely shut down properly (either left running or it hibernates), so it's not unusual for an instance of firefox to be running for 1-2 weeks at a time with around a dozen tabs open. It would regularly hit 2-300MB of memory used up. Firefox 3 has, so far, yet to top about 85mb, which is still alot of memory for a browser, but a massive improvement.

There's an IE8? Since when?

I'm downloading Safari 3.1 as I type this. It's finally out for Windows. :)

Edit: Safari also boasts that it loads Javascript up to 6x faster too. =P

I'm a serious dude, so what?

Microsoft should write IE8 so that it supports Bungie.net.

My feeling on web browsing can be summed up with this simile:
Browsers are like doors on the house of your computer. The quickest way into a house you want to rob is through one of these doors. Internet Explorer makes me feel like I've got doors with the hinges on the outside.

Subtle.

It seems Javascript hasn't improved yet and they are setting Firefox 4.0 to meet that goal of a way better scripting system. Of course Java and Flash in general suck on any browser, hence why I'm using some open source Linux Flash and java software.

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

I've used the Firefox 3 Beta for a few days here on B.net and it's still terribly slow like the current Firefox. Other "heavy java" sites, I've obtained the same results.

I've dumped it and use Firefox with the IE Tab mods.

IE 6 has so many bugs, both security and rendering. You shouldn't be using it, it is crap.

Basically, if you aren't using IE7, Firefox 2, latest non-beta of Safari, or latest Opera, you have a browser that isn't supported. IE 6 still works, but your experience will be sub-optimal.

I believe that's the tech that Adobe contributed to make their interpreted script engine run faster... I guess it isn't surprising that they're waiting until version 4 to do such a major overhaul. It will take a while to do that.

That's because AOL uses what is essentially a custom build of Firefox. There are a few differently named variants out there, but it is still just Firefox.

One of the very rare places where IE6 is still found is school computers. And schools appear to be stamping that out.
