Where did you get this info I do not believe it is stated most people feel that 343 guilty spark let the cat out of the bag or maybe the enemy AI on the ship with cortana.

I am not saying you have a bad Idea I think it is very good but I am very well read on all things Halo and have never seen this theory.

Yeah, reading Fall of Reach/playing Halo:CE makes me think that it was either the backup AI on the Pillar of Autumn or that giggly little Guilty Spark bastard. My money is on Guilty Spark, because I doubt they would continue the game with evidence given from the book.

im positive that thats how they figure it out, they latch on a transmitter and i guess they follow it, but eventually they come upon earth, i think it was in fall of reach, and i just figured out what " tony your speaking balonie" ment

The method TonyBalonie described is indeed used by the Covenant in the novels. However, while this is what enables them to find Reach, it doesn't automatically follow suit that the same method leads them to Earth. Certainly a possibility, though.

I agree with the origional post, although i don't have the books with me to back me up here, i'm sure that they find the location from those wierd forerunner artifacts which they scan for the co-ordinates.

I suppose another possibility is that when they origionally found us, they spread out and surrounded us, then closed in from all sides, slowly moving forward and glassing colonies.
I'm sure they have enough ships for that :)

As i remeber they attach the transmitter to the ship captain keyes controlled which led them to Reach not earth i think after the fight at reach the covenant found something else that told them were earth was that what i think at least

The transmitter on the Iroqouis lead to Reach, not Earth. Also the rocks found lead to Halo and possibly Reach. Other than that we have no idea how the Covenant find Earth. Honestly I think we did it back in 1970-something. Don't believe me? Well then look at this.

Voyager 2 and the map to Sol

Source information

I believe that possibly through the phenomeneon that allows asteroids to slip into subspace also allowed either one of the Pioneer or Voyager satellites to go into subspace, and come out into Covenant held terrirtory. They found it, analyzed it, and followed. SImple as that.
