Hello everyone,

This forum has been such a great help, thanks to all the people who have been kind enough to respond to my newbie questions....

Here's another...

I found lots of info on opening the appropriate ports on my firewall on a sp2 xp operating system, but I need to know the procedure for non sp2 versions of xp, it's a little different....

why not just update to sp2 you ask? Well, my rig doubles as a video editing platform and there are reported issues with sp2, so I don't want to change anything as I make a living with this thing and any screw ups is going to cost me...

So once again, I throw myself to the mercy of The Maw for help...

Heyyo,

No need to PM, we'll find our way here. ;)

I myself think the built in XP pre-SP2 firewall is non-customizable. I suggest disabling it, and grabing Sygate Personal Firewall. It's fully customizable, and free. You can block certain IP's, open certain ports, stop/allow certain programs to acess the internet... just a great firewall, I say the best free one. =D

[EDIT]
Oh, and i think SP2 is the devil, and one must deny entry of the devil. Lots of probs, HaloPC has lots of probs with that and apparently 256MB vid cards...

once again, thanks...

I've heard many bad things about sp2, so anything I can do to avoid it would be fine with me. Is it true that disabling the firewall does not guarantee that the ports I need will be open? I'm getting many servers through the gamespy matching service, but none from Bungie, could I still see some server but not others if the right ports are not open?

Cheers...and thanks again

You can do what I did. Uninstall SP2. It's true that the firewall can still be active even if turned off. Several of my ports opened up afterward. However, some you need to manually enable in your network connections.

what a monkey

I run XP pro with service pack 2 Halo is fine & you can open ports if you need to .I found no need for this as Halo woked fine ,I would say it is much better to do a clean install of XP then add sp2 otherwise it will/can take a while for everything to work as it should again.........If you have a spare hard drive do a clean install for your games or work only (I did this for music progs) its the safe way to do it with no loss of data hard drive space is so cheep.I run 2 80gb ata drives then a 160gb sata + a 200gb sata (lot of audio & phtotgrapic work in my job)
