I will bet millions of dollars that the original Sidewinder will -blam!- all over this maps face. I'm sorry, but this map just has fail written all over it. Why does Bungie insist on having man cannons EVERYWHERE!? Honestly, I'd love an answer. And why do they want more emphasis on vehicle battle and say that "Sidewinder games always ended in boring foot races and objective stalemates"? Complete and utter bull-blam!-. I played Sidewinder CTF two versus -blam!- two and it NEVER got old, boring, or stale. It was fun, strategic, and intense. Trying to stop caps or counter cap, it got very, very heated. The vehicles played their role, the passages played their role, the teleporters played their role, and most importantly the -blam!- ladders played their role. Ramps over ladders? Really Bungie? I know you haven't put ladders in a game since H1, but maybe thats just another reason why H1 kicks the -blam!- out of the other 2, H3 more specifically. And trust me, I've played this map more than enough to know what I'm talking about. 3 seasons of CAL and 4 of TWL Halo PC along with pugs and pubs has certainly given me more play time on the original Sidewinder than probably a good number of Bungie employees. Seriously, why would you ever think the tunnels is where the actions concentrates? If anywhere, it concentrated on the teleporter cliffs. Sniper battles from either the 2nd level of the bases to the cliffs or cliff to cliff was probably the most concentration, but there really wasn't one spot you could pinpoint as being the biggest center of activity. You had to utilize all of your options (warthog, teleporters, tunnels) to effectively work the map.
Basically, adding a -blam!-load of vehicles and mancannons doesn't do any justice to a previously excellent map. Sure, I haven't played it yet, but I can guarantee it won't feel anything like Sidewinder, and to call it a successor or inspiration is just a discredit to a classic. I don't get why it is so difficult for Bungie to simply remake maps. IF IT ISN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT! First Hang 'em High and Derelict, then Lockout, then the BR and pistol, now Sidewinder. Simply sad.
What's the point of simply carrying over an old map into Halo 3? Halo 3's gameplay style is completely different than Halo's(more emphasis on team coordination, vehicular combat, tactical gameplay, ect), and they make changes to adapt an old map to a new game. That takes change, and for you to sit down on your ass and complain that Bungie, who is made up of professional programmers and designers(who know much more about making a map than you do) doesn't make their decisions for a reason is, to quote you, "simply sad".
All I am saying is, if they stopped console every unhappy gamer with explanations, they would have no time to do what they are paid to do: make games. It's downloadable content. You don't want it, don't download it, but wasting forum space with immature complaints without stopping to think just gets in the way of everyone else who has to see it while browsing this thread.
To the rest of you who are complaining that now you won't get to have your 3 hour CTF match, think about this: This map has to work with matchmaking, which means you have to be able to play and score the flag within that twelve minute window. You want a long game? Get creative with the gametype, mess around with weapon/vehicle placement, make this map what you want it to be. Bungie has to make sure it will work as consistently as possible, so they make the changes they make to ensure the game is fun for as many people as possible and still retains some practicality.
