Still active? Wow.

Also, that post about weapon spawns, thanks. I really never knew that 2 second thing.

Now I understand a bit on why Standoff can sometimes have 2 lasers. At least, I think I understand.

Yeah. I try to be there as long as there are questions.

Yeah, there is no maximum weapon on map limit for that laser, and I think the laser is on a 3:00 timer, so after they book it back to their base and hold still with that laser, another will pop up in 3 minutes. Hell, it's possible to arm your whole team with lasers if the match is slow enough.
Also possible to have no one else to have a laser.

I've done this before: Get laser, use it all (and get kills hopefully), keep it in the backback, keep moving, wait for the 3 mins, switch the empty laser for another weapon, and pick up a fresh laser.

... Wait... How does that work with the 2 second thing?

I think it needs more explosives......... i think another crate should do the trick.

Cheers dude, Really useful.

I'm a little confused by what you said, but let me try to get this straight. You mean, you're going to keep moving with it?

What you could do, in theory, is pick up the laser, keep moving, chill in the back of the base, fire it when you need to, but never stop moving (strafing, I guess), and as long as you keep the laser on your person, you could essentially make the laser NEVER respawn. That is, if the person carrying it never dies.

If a weapon is empty, and swapped out, the timer starts as soon as it is swapped. If a weapon is swapped out while still having ammo in it, the timer will start as soon as the weapon is on the ground for 2 seconds.

Tricky stuff.

Yet it's simple if you think about it.

It's the same when having the weapon on your back right?

Yeah, but remember that putting the weapon away doesn't start the timer. It wont start until your character is completely stopped.

In recent news, I played MLG Anakin in matchmaking the other day. Doubles Snipers Foundary. Lost by 1 point. 21-22. It's k though, cuz I had the most kills.

That explains a lot. I would never have expected weapons to only respawn after the wielder stands still. Now I know how my weapon timing can be off for a while.
Also should I presume that if the person who picked up a weapon did not stop moving that the respawn timer for that weapon would start two seconds after he dies?

That's where it gets difficult. The timer will start 2 seconds after the weapon STOPS on the ground.

So, lets say your on The Pit, and rushing rockets, and the enemy picks up the rockets at 11:18, and is running back, but you grenade him, obviously things are going to go flying. The rocket launcher will probably skid across the ground a little bit. So lets say you've got a good eye, and notice it stand still on the ground at 11:10. The rocket will respawn at 8:10. When it gets difficult like that, I just try to get a good estimation of when they'll be up, and then time them on the spawn.

MLG uses Drop Spawns. This means, the weapon actually spawns in mid air, which moves the weapon, and it will then start it's countdown 2 seconds after is it still on the ground.

If everything goes smooth, here are the times for weapon spawns on MLG settings:

15 Minute Games
15:00 - Rockets & Sniper
12:26 - Sniper
11:56 - Rockets
9:53 - Sniper
8:53 - Rocket
7:20 - Sniper
5:50 - Rocket
4:47 - Sniper
2:47 - Rocket
2:14 - Sniper

30 Minute Game
30:00 - Rocket & Sniper
27:26 - Sniper
26:56 - Rocket
24:53 - Sniper
23:53 - Rocket
22:20 - Sniper
20:50 - Rocket
19:47 - Sniper
17:47 - Rocket
17:14 - Sniper
14:44 - Rocket
14:41 - Sniper
12:08 - Sniper (Watch out, sniper spawns twice before rocket)
11:41 - Rocket
9:35 - Sniper
8:38 - Rocket
7:02 - Sniper
5:35 - Rocket
4:29 - Sniper
2:32 - Rocket
1:56 - Sniper

When I was learning to memorize these times, I made a type of box-chart time table thing that showed all the times, and what weapon, and taped it to the top and bottom of my screen. It really helped me learn.

Here's a quick Q&A-

Q: What are Drop Spawns?
A: Halo 3's weapon respawns are set based on when the weapon was picked up. Back in Halo 1 & 2, weapons always had a deterimined spawn time. Rockets were always at 12:30, 10:00, 7:30, 5:00, etc. MLG uses Forge to mimic these STATIC spawn times by placing weapons on boxes, and then deleting the box to make the weapon drop for a short time, activating it's spawn counter, similar to how if you die while running with the weapon, and you have to see when the weapon stops in normal matchmaking.

Q: Why do the weapons sometimes not spawn at these times?
A: Well, weapons have to drop from a certain height to activate the spawn timer. Now, if the weapon is picked up before it hits the ground, say someone is waiting on the spawn counting down, then the spawn timer will not activate until they hold still for 2 seconds. This is called Dirtying the spawn. You can do this to your advantage, to control spawn times. However, it can get sort of confusing.

Sweet.

I see, so in normal games it's better to get the weapon first and keep moving, whereas in MLG you actually want to be at the weapon spawn a few seconds early so you can catch it before it drops and not allow it to respawn?
BTW, does jumping count as moving, seeing as some jumps last for more than two seconds? I'd assume it does, but if it doesn't then things could get (more) complicated if you were to start strafing, say on Construct but then jump to a lower level or take a lift to get to safety.

In normal games, it is absolutely more advantagious to grab the weapons first. From there, you can time them and essentially guarantee yourself the second power weapon spawn. As for MLG, it's a trade off.

Some people like to let it sit for the 2 seconds just so that it stays on the same respawn-time-line as what I listed before. Some people memorize that list of spawn times (myself included) and will just try to stick to that. If you pick it up, you'll have to keep your mind on the timer a little more, and you'll have to be there to pick it up as it falls again, or else you'll have to do the math again to time it.

If you attend MLG events, and have a coach, he will actually pay attention to when you pick it up and stop, and then have a stopwatch clipped to his clipboard, and he will start the timer, and then write down the timer, and do some math to find out all the spawns for the rest of the game, and then redo them all if it is "dirtied" again.

Well I don't have a coach, but I've got a 10 year old brother who always wants to help, usually I tell him to watch the radar, but maybe timing could be his occupation for a while. :-P

PS: This stuff is actually pretty helpful, between this thread, soem friends and playing Mythic my k/d and rank have both been creeping up, slowly but surely. :-D

Yeah, I might not be the best at Mythic, but I feel pretty skillful MM-wise. I'm just glad this things getting out to people. So far, I've played 5 groups of people who've read this in Matchmaking.

Yep. I've got finals this week, and I'll be editing the video in my free time.

For those who dont know, here's what's up-

Episode 2 of My Tips To Reach 50! will be up NEXT FRIDAY, 5/29/09.

This episode will feature special jumps to help you get around the map.

Episode 3 is scheduled for ONE WEEK LATER. That video will feature everything you need to know about The Pit.

Episode 4 should be out shortly after, and will be all about the Battle Rifle.

I'm also starting up a different side-video series called "My Tips To Reach 50! Quick Tips" and the first one will be about your gaming setup. Most of it is already filmed, but I haven't even touched the editing yet.

More info later. Depending on the success and or failure of any of the upcoming videos, I'm thinking about asking Urk to throw me a spot on the Bungie Blog to showcase an episode, which should help out some people who dont come across the thread. But that's a little into the future.

That's all for now :D

My strategy is to get as much exo as possible then get the skills up for slayer, MLG, Team Snipers and Team Doubles. i am almost 20 (i know i stink sometimes) but i only focus on exp but now i am switching to skill ups. so if you want me to get you some exp fast add me Loonykilla10 on XBL and we can play some team based game on match making. :)

Hey do you know how i got stuck on lone wolves? I am a 38 but it takes 3 to 4 wins to go up ONE lvl.i am a 38 and have 76 exp i think.i have only lost about 4 games and those i came in fourth.I constantly come in first but it is slow lvling is there anything i can do to speed it up a bit?

  • 05.30.2009 10:29 AM PDT

----The Fool

This guide is awsome, but for me i just can't level up anymore. It takes like 4-5 first place wins in lone wolves to level up one level and in TS i was 35 and got my friend from 1-41 and i went up 2 levels. just doesnt make much sense.

  • 05.30.2009 11:34 AM PDT

Is it better to play ranked or Social matches or does it really matter because i always play socal with my friends and i'm just wondering which is better..

Is there a way for me to get passed playing by instinct?
I don't know how to describe it, but I don't think when I play, only react. :/

It's a terrible thing to do, since I make decisions that people playing with their heads wouldn't make, and it's my one major problem.

nice thread, and even though you dont have a 50 these will help. i mean rank realy doesnt mater anymore.

  • 05.31.2009 2:17 AM PDT

I'm a great guy really.

Great thread shadow, didn't realise it was you who made this until now so well done. But my 50 was all about the movement, when I've watched myself in theatre I realised how much I'm constantly, jumping, looking around, switching weapons and also looking at the radar. I'm a bad doubles player as I'm more aggressive and rush, I play worse on defence. I'm usually the guy top of the list in kills but most deaths on my team, yet I always go positive. doubles may be the easiest way for most, but I got mine in slayer and I find it easier, this won't work for everyone but it's good still.
