Your Xbox Setup
Well, now it's time to start looking at your actual gaming setup. Do you use an HD TV? What kind? Are you using the best video cords and settings? This is where we're going to go over that.
You're going to want a good station to play your games at that will give you the best overall gaming ability. First thing's first. Your screen. What kind of screen are you using? If you are using an HD tv, your TV has video lag. Sry. Now, you're going to look into getting rid of this. First off, you're going to try to get VGA Cables. For those who are unfamiliar, these cables are similar to those found from your Computer to your Monitor. These cables are going to help your refresh rate. Before you buy them, make sure your TV has a VGA input. Almost all new LCD, DLP, and Plasma flat screens have them.
Now, let's hook you up with a sweet screen. You're going to look for a screen that has a 22 inch widescreen display. This is the perfect size to show you everything you need, and isn't too big where as you have to actually look around to see the whole screen. The most important aspect to this is SCREEN DELAY. You're going to look for something that has a 5ms or less screen delay. If it doesn't have it, move along. You can find better. If you can, find a screen that will support 1680x1050 display. MLG uses a Viewsonic.
Next, you're going to want a headset. It is an absolute MUST for FPS's. You will be able to hear everything, even people trying to crouch behind you. MLG uses and endorses the Astro A40 System. Make sure to use the Mixamp, and Optical Cables for optimum performance. Here's My Headset. It is signed by Pro's such as Tsquared, Walshy, FearItSelf, Nexux, Soldi3r187, and Tizoxic.
Now, try to grab a WIRED controller. FInally, keep a clean play area.
Rank System Explination
Playing solo and having high EXP does nothing.
You have 2 factors in TrueSkill. Mu and Sigma.
Mu is your current level, and Sigma is what level you "could" be.
Basically, you have a wide array of what level your Mu could be, and that array is your Sigma. Now, as you play, your Sigma gets smaller and smaller, closing in on your Mu.
here's what one may look like over the course of a few games (blown completely out of porportion)
35-36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43
Here, your Sigma is between 35 and 43. This is the range your level could be between. Now, lets add some games and their result-
WON GAME
36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43-44
What happened here? You won a game, and your level went up. Also, your minimum Sigma went up, and your maximum Sigma went up. Let's keep going.
LOSE GAME
36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43
Alright, so you lost a game. Boo hoo. Well, lets look at the repercusions. Your sigma dropped. Your minimum Sigma is still at 36, but your maximum Sigma is at 43. Luckily, you didn't lose a level.
Here's a few more games-
WIN GAME
37-38-39-40-41-42-43
LOSE GAME
38-39-40-41-42
So, you saw your Sigma and Mu go back and forth, but what happened on that last game? Your Sigma both increased AND decreased. This is because the system is deciding where your Mu should be.
Eventually, after a few games, your Sigma and Mu may come to-
39-40-41
This is what we call "rank lock". This is when the system has pegged you on what level you should be.
How do you get out of this? Stretch your Sigma back out. How? Constant winning. Lots. Of. Constant. Winning. You need to stretch your Sigma out far before you can move your Mu.
Remember, there's one thing we must all remember- This is NOT an RPG. You should not keep leveling up just because you win a lot. The system is just finding what people are at your level, and showing you your TrueSkill level, which in other games, it is hidden.
My experience at MLG 2009 Pro Circuit Meadowlands Event-
Hey guys. Back from MLG Meadowlands 2009.
Man was it awesome. We left Friday morning at 6:00 a.m. and got there about 11:00 a.m. The Meadowlands Expo Center was packed outside waiting to sign in, and it was pouring! Here's a pic of me Saturday when it was sunny. First thing was first. We had to get our hotel room. Then we walked over to the Meadowlands sign in. As we finally got signed in, we walked into the expo center. Our first impressions were that it was going to be crazy.
We started over to the warm up area, and got ready, which mostly involved me finding my glasses, which are hard to find when I only need them for gaming. We got to scrim against Team Carbon for a bit, which totally rocked, even after I assassinated Soviet. Soon, we had to start into our matches.
After our first match, we went over to the Dr. Pepper station to watch Str8 Rippin. After their game, we got to mess around with Tsquared. He was even nice enough to sign my controller! After that, we had to make a stop over by the MLG store and talk to the ladies (dont laugh at my face. They made me laugh when the picture was taken!).
The next day, we hung out with Walshy for a bit. Then it was back to game time. Later, we met up with the Dr. Pepper girls, who ended up in the room next to us, which was cool. We became good friends. After that, it was time to head on over to the Dr. Pepper station to watch Str8 Rippin warm up for the main stage event Saturday night.
Now, it was time to head on over to the Main Stage. First up was Pure Talent vs. The Riot. PT ended it quickly. After that, Str8 Rippin took the stage. I was on the floor on Red Team's (str8) side. After T2 threw out some tshirts, they sat down and got ready to play. The games started, and the fight got head. Str8 took the first two games in stride, making the score 2-0 in favor of Str8 Rippin. Then, things went downhill, and Believe The Hype came back and won the next 3 games in a row, giving them the win.
Next up was Instict, lead by team captain, Walshy. After some crazy applause, and some funny trash talking, Instinct sat down and got to work. Everyone was sure that a match between Final Boss and Instict was going to be good. The game was theirs in no time, even though Victory X was on his game.
We left on Sunday around 2:00 after we got some practice games in, and made it home in time to watch Triggers Down take the Meadowlands title.
Crazy weekend. Cant wait for Columbus.
I found a video on youtube with me in it. Try to follow me here. I am on the ground, on Walshy's right, to the left of the guy in the red shirt. I have a blue shirt on. You can see me at 3:12 in this video.
