OK when I first started playing Halo PC back in 04 I would host games (only on occasion joining some elses) on version 1.4. I NEVER had complaints of lag on my server and the few times I'd join some else server it was usually lag free. After a WHOLE SUMMER VACATION of nothing but HALO PC (I'd wake up at 5am everyday and played till I went to bed, only breaking to use the bathroom and to eat) I experienced very little lag.
After retiring from the game for a few years I returned to find that every server I joined lagged horridly even if I was at less than 50 ping. I figured maybe it was something on my end, poor PC, my location, my connection speed.
Now, I have a BY FAR, more then enough, powerful PC, with a high speed connection (My college's internet) and I'm in a heavy populated area where I'm close to the cable boxes so I'll have less slow down, I try Halo PC 1.4,1.7 and CE (I have 3 versions) I tried each one of them on the lowest pinged servers I could find today and they ALL were wretchedly laggy compared to my experiences when I first got Halo PC. I took into account also that it should be FASTER then that time because I'm in a ideal situation for online gaming, my connection speed (High speed shared T3), my PC (Quad core, 7300GT, 3gigs of RAM), my location (Tempe,AZ).
SO, its NOT at my end, or at least its highly unlikely. So what does this mean?
I'm not an expert on such things, but my best guess is that Bungie, Gearbox, or Microsoft (I don't know who makes the decisions for it) put Halo PC at a MUCH lower priority on their servers or took away the servers all together and had all of the games work through P2P (which is much slower)
Of course I could be entirely wrong about this, it could be something else. but if what I think happened is in the ballpark, I think it is outrageous, WHY? because there is PLENTY of other VERY VERY OLD games, older then Halo PC, that still have high priority and are nearly lagless like Halo PC was back in the day, and yet Halo PC, already in need of a crutch due to its poor networking code has no servers that I could find with out lag and its not getting that extra omph to keep it barely PLAYABLE. I'm amazed so many people still play it today.
I could be getting this all wrong and getting all rilled up for nothing, but it is sort of what I've gathered thus far with what information that I have. If some one more informed than me on this topic could point me in the right direction PLEASE DO. I want to know why I can't play my favorite game online with out having to fight against lag, which takes away the fun from the game. Note I searched around on google and found that there have been other posts in the past on this same topic, only they didn't put 2 and 2 together. but they mentioned the speedy Halo PC from the past and the laggy mess the is halo PC today.
If what I say is true, I'm saddened because I doubt we could get them to make Halo PC nearly lagless again. I suppose we could try, at least though.
EDIT: OK, its not P2P, but could cause the slowdown? reducing the number of servers for HPC and HCE seem like a possibility to me... but I know nothing of Network code...
also Damn it I wish I could edit my poll question... I mispelled "Theory"...
EDIT:2 also I voted "other" on my own poll so I don't have to keep clicking "view results"
