I imagine you need a pretty darn good graphics card. What card are you guys using?

  • 06.16.2004 2:08 PM PDT

Me. It's only a 9600 Pro as well.

Same here, easily at 800x600, with a tiny bit of chug (low of 15fps) at 1024x768.

im pretty sure this is right, but 640x480 is the max resoltion for a regular CRT tv isn't it?

Sorta. If you're on HDTV it'll do straight 640x480 no problem. If you're on a regular TV its 640x480 is interlaced, so it's actually 320x240 at any given pass of the electron beam but each pass is on alternating lines so it looks like a flickery 640x480.

-- Steve hopes that his explanation hasn't confused a concept that's actually very simple.

[EDIT: TalkingElmo quotes the correct resolution of a TV as 640x240 in his post below. Sorry for the thinko!]

I can run Halo PC at 1280 x 1024 with my Pentium 4 and a Radeon 9600XT. I also have all the specular and particles on.

1280 x 1024 with radeon 9000, looks great with no trouble, no lag. Only in SP does it lag. I have custom Pc I'm pretty sure thats why.

I have a 9800 Pro (128MB) and it runs Halo just fine. I play with everything on high (except specular) at 1024x768.

A regular TV runs at 640x480 interlaced, meaning at any given moment only half of the horizontal lines are drawn, giving it a resolution of 640x240. An HDTV or an EDTV can run in "progressive scan," like a computer monitor, where it draws each line every time. It looks much more solid and crisp. An HDTV can also run at 1280x720p (progressive scan), or 1920x1080i (interlaced). At those resolutions, it looks incredible. At 1920x1080, Jay Leno looks like he's sitting in your living room.

Yep, that's the correct figure. I thinko'd in my post and halved both numbers.

That high a resolution? Whoa... HDTV is a bigger leap than I thought. Halo2 will rock on HDTV!

-- Steve's waiting for standarization of digital tuners before he looks at getting a new TV. He may have a long wait...

I can run Halo for at Xbox at full graphics, and a bullet-proof frame rate. If you are having graphics problems then there is a simple answer...buy Halo for Xbox. Besides, the PC version of Halo sucks.

Runs fine with my NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 at 800x600 on Legendary & even 1024x768 on Normal AS LONG AS i have specular & one of the other lighting effects turned off
via the "-useFF" or "-use11" startup option.

See my post on the NVIDIA problems for details of why.

I can run full detail (all settings turned on or set to highest) at 1280x1024 (the highest my monitor supports) with the correct textures and with little lag. The only times I've noticed it lag were during parts in the campaign when I was inside of detailed structures, such as Covenant cruisers. I have a Geforce 4 ti 4200.
