There are plenty of people, enough that you'll likely never play the same person twice (if joining random servers) However, xfire allows you to keep track of friends, message them in game, and see what they are doing.
Internet/network lag isn't bad, but the "hardcoded" lag is terrible. Basically halo transmits information so slow that if you shoot someone while they are moving, even with a sniper rifle or tank shell, by the time halo sends the game info packets to the host, your target will have moved and you will have missed. This means that you have to shoot at where your target will be in .1-.5 seconds. People tend to really hate this, but most of the regulars including me have come to really like this, as it means no point and kill.
Since servers are player owned, admins can kick, ban, etc., so as long as you stay on servers you enjoy, the experience tends to be very positive. Most clan-owned servers have teamspeak and such as well, if voice chat is your thing. Also, there are a lot of christian servers which prohibit cussing and are well-moderated to prevent people from ruining games, if that's a concern.
Overall, it's $20, and if you are looking for a game you can play off and on easily, has great weapon balance and map design, and is easy on the hardware specs, go for it!
