As Halo 2 is 3D(as you just noticed) there are no pixels. Only polygons. Unless you want to count the little dots on the screen.

With Bump Mapping is how they do it. Once again there are NO pixels. Pixels are 2D

Yes pixels are used to texture the polygons I believe. Anyway MC2 has less ploygons and bump mapping is used to make it look more detailed then it actually is.

Im pretty sure pixels are used in 3D to texture the models and that why you get the squared jagged edges on the sides of models. (although I think halo 2 blurs the edges to make it appear smoother) Anyway, pixels are used in 3D Im pretty sure. (And Xbox is capable of more pixels per second than any other console YAY)

I think you should ask shiska about this kind of thing seeing as he seems to know lot about bump maps and programming I think.

Halo 2 MC has less polygons than Halo 1 MC...

And so are all the characters...

The funny thing, is that all the characters look like 50 times better now because of the bumpmap details...

If all that is true, which i'm pretty sure it is, all games should use it

Alot of games are!

Actually very few games use bump mapping because it is extremely hard to code in the engine. I am not entirely sure though. There are almost no engines that even support bump mapping for the PC.

I know half-life 2 uses it now and I said "are" meaning are going to. Im pretty sure companies will pick up on this and use it in future games

Its blatantly obvious that none of you actaully have any idea
what it is that you're talking about. You know nothing of it,
other than the snippets of info about bump mapping...so why
are you dumbasses even discussing it?

well duh! Were using these snippets of info and exchanging them to learn more. It called education....

Basically we all know this:
Models use less polygons and more bump-mapping to keep detail and leave more power to run different things like more AI and stuff.

Okay, since you know that every body is wrong or uninformed, you must know more about it to even now that they are wrong. So clear up all the confusion and tell everybody how it really works.

Bump Maps are easy to use/understand its just a black and white picture that when put over the polygons the lighter the map is the higher the polygons will rise. The darker the deeper they go. It's used for detailing things while saving polygons.here

The # of pixels remains the same constantly as all Xbox games run at the same resolution, all the time. The new MC uses few polygons, but a lot of bump-mapping to add the extra detail.

Bump mapping, is, in effect, an optical illusion that convinces the eye that there is extra detail. Some of the walls in Halo used this.

Its not just walls its used on the ghost, warthog, banshee and all of the vehicles and environments and characters have bump maps added to them.

In Halo 2, yes, it's going to be used on almost everything, but it wasn't used extensively in Halo.

I don't think it was used at all in Halo 1. Because there engine didn't support it.

It was used in Halo, but only on the walls as I mentioned earlier.

I just wanted to help you out a lil, Yes 3D uses Polygons not pixels, but the Polygon count in Halo 2 is actually lower, They didnt have to use as many since they are using Per-Pixel lighting, which I might add is AWESOME! With fewer polygons the game will be faster over the internet, and also Bump-mapping, This is a technique used to create a "bumpy" surface with is really flat, what it does is you use a black and white 'height-map' and it either lightens or darkens the pixels of the textures. So bungie has found a way to use all this awesome graphical stuff for our viewing pleasure, but is optimizing internet gameplay at the same time, Isn't bungie great?

Just to let you know how I know all this, I do alot of 3D graphics. I'm out. Bye
