I finally got my 9800pro working, but now during gameplay the game will get all glitcy like it is stuttering or something. Please I just want to play my games. I have the latest drivers and game updates, but it is not working properly no matter what game it is within 1 minute it starts acting up. I don't think its over heating because its too fast. PLEASE HELP!

What version of Catalyst do you have? The new one sucks (hmm, latest drivers for everything seem to suck. SP2, 1.06 for Halo...). Roll back to the previous one. Otherwise, like panda, it's beyond me.

What would help are system specs. Also, check the sticky about 256MB graphics card issues. I think 9800 may be on there, but I'm not 100% sure. The sticky has a solution.

Catalyst 5.1 doesn't suck, it owns every other driver I've ever had for my 9800 series. T3h Mard agrees. Also, I'm not sure about the SP2 problem since on my 9800 and my g/f's 9600, both 256MB XT versions running on SP2, Halo runs fine without exceptions and without needing the procedure described in the sticky. It sounds more like the rest of this guy's spec is too low to run Halo smoothly.

is vsync better than no vsync?

No vsync means Halo will run as fast as it possibly can, but this almost always results in 'tearing', which is when one frame tries to load before the previous one has disappeared, causing a horizontal line to appear across your screen. I would never recommend no vsync. Halo's other options are 30fps and vsync. 30fps is fine, and is usually smooth enough. Personally I prefer vsync because I can get a consistent 60fps with it, which no matter what people say about not being able to tell between 30 and 60 fps, it is noticable improvement. By the way, if you press Ctrl + F12 during the game you can see your FPs displayed on a nice graph. The number which doesn't change is your refresh rate, the one which tends to flicker occasionally when lots of stuff happens is your FPS.

Heyyo,

New drivers are definately the best since Catalyst v4.5. I get a small framerate boost using PS 2.0, which's great cause then I don't need to use both xifre to get ip's and then halospy to connect using PS 1.4.. so that saves me the hassle. ;)

Yeah, the stickey thread for vidcards will help, cause I know there's some 256MB versions of the ATI radeon 9800 pro. SP2 is really annoying, most people experience severe probs with it, and mine won't even install, so I don't even need to bother with SP2. :)

Make sure you have the latest patch of Halo, (v1.05 at least, or one knotch up to v1.06) cause I'm not sure if previous patches work well with that vidcard.

Me bud has a 9800 PRO, with SP1 and no SP2, and he runs it with np, so if you're not too attached to SP2, you could always uninstall it.

How do you know when you're over clocking your card too much cuz I'm thinking of OCing my card. Should I OC it?

Heyyo,

Usually you can tell if you get weird colors on your screen, or you can't move the mouse n' stuff. OCing is ok, but I suggest only doing it after your warranty expires, otherwise your warranty will become invalid cause OCing isin't covered by all OEM warranties, and pretty much all retail warranties too.

well panda has an X700, he dosent need to OC, but i OC'd my piss poor 9200, and i can get better FPS

i think his card has like a core clock and memory clock of about 500-550 mHz, so he can OC it to maybe 540-580

I overclocked my card and hardly noticed anything, apart from a 5% gap in 3D benchmarks. Overclocking is fun sometimes, but I only do it on my processor, bus, and ram anyway. Those are what can use an extra kick on my computer - it's hot enough in there as it is.

In my experience the only thing more likely to cause problems than upgrading to SP2 is upgrading and then uninstalling. PErsonally I'm lucky, I have an OEM windows with SP2 already integrated on it. I also got a SP2 upgrade disc with a magazine subscription which I used to upgrade my g/f's PC to SP2, again no problems.

Yeah, SP2 wouldn't allow lots of my programs to run. I believe that if you plan to get it, do a reformat, install windows, and immediately install SP2. Otherwise, steer clear as it can raise hell with everything from Half-Life 2 to McAfee. It's almost like upgrading your OS.
