Ok. I purchased a Radeon 9600 graphics card and I asked for some information about it. You know, how good is it and what drivers do i need to install. The guy was like its a really good graphics card and said i can put the screen resolution on the highest and he said it will work fine. Well I installed it and put the screen resolution on the highest and it was lagging. Is there something wrong with my graphics card or my computer. Also, I would like to know what smartshader is.

nope, the 9600 series can't run on high res. Even the 9800 will suffer at times, but much less. The 9600 is a good card, especially the XT. However, expect about 1024x768 with all the settings on (maybe even 800x600) to have no lag.

Isn't the 9800 XT more expensive than the x700?

umm, yeah, graphics cards are the actual, physical cards you put into the AGP or PCI-e slot on your computer and hook you monitor up to. They run from $130-$1800, although the higer end ones are a joke...

If you want to play games you definately need one.

Heyyo,

Lol, one would hope it ran better since it costs more and is newer there angel. :p

Anywho, I have a Sapphire Radeon 9600 PRO (rest of my comp specs are in my signature), and I run the game like this:

screen rez: 640x480
refresh rate: 120MHz
framerate: VSYNC
specular: off
shadows: off
decals: on
Textures: High
Particles: High

and I get around 41.28F/S on the timedemo. That's pretty weak considering HaloPC's 2 years old, but it's not your hardware's fault, it's the games for lack of good optimizations.

NOW, Half-Life 2?
screen rez: 800x600
framerate: NO VSYNC
Reflections: reflect world
shadows: high
textures: high
... well everything on high, and I get over 69F/S on the "video stress test". HL2 is very nice to our ATI Videocards. Probably the best optimized gamed out there. :)

I get an average of 45 fps with everything on, 75 hz and 1280x1024. This is only on Blood Gulch but on Danger canyon I got something like 50-75.

I can get 120 on 1600x1200. I haven't tried higher res, though.

True :D. i'm just saying it is possible, though. I have this old monitor from Windows 95-era that gets up to 120. I think that out of all computer components, monitors need the least upgrading.

Heyyo,

Yep, monitors are like, for general viewing pleasure. If you have a hugeass 19" CRT monitor, and a crappy vidcard, there's no way you will be able to play at full-rez and have great graphics. Actually, for smaller screen rez's I suggest smaller monitors, looks less sketchy, and more smooth at least..
