I find that it is nearly impossible for me to be scared by games anymore, and these console games cannot hope to get me creeped out...

But there is one game that scared the -blam!- out of me. System Shock 2, an old PC game made by the same designer who made Deus Ex (the original). Your gun can jam in the middle of a fight, and if you make the slightest noise, or are detected Mutant Hybrids and the corrupt security robots and a number of other horrors will come at you. Forget balance or gameplay, this is about survival, and this game takes brains. There are no "find the key" or "look at this picture for several hours" puzzles; if it would work in real life, chances are it will work in SS2. This kind of survival gameplay (actually based on survival, unlike so-called "Survival-Horror" games) combined with a very creepy atmosphere is what made SS2 the only game to scare me. Of course, the RPG-like chararcter trait development, immersive first-person perspective, and complex plot also help make this game well worth picking up... If you can find it, it should be really cheap bargain bin stuff. If you can't, well, there's always BitTorrent.

Resident Evil Nemisses

Not the scariest, but it has the most badass badguy. Out of any game i'v ever played he got my heart beating the fastest.

Try Nosferatu: The Wrath of Molachi. The game itself is for PC only, but very frightening. Basically, you start off in a castle at night and must survive against vampires, spectres, and other monsers. After awhile, it almost feels real, and I find myself freaking out every time my character walks into a dark room. The creators were smart in changing the map layout every time you start a new game, making the challenges and surprises quite different. Give it a shot.

Non believer in thread!!!

Play Eternal Darkness in Surround Sound with the room darkened (Pitch black). If something doesn't at least startle you, you're possessed.

I was freaked out by Marathon when I first played it. I didn't have any music, and I forgot to turn the light on in the room. [/shiver]

LMAO!

The first time I was playing Eternal (The fan made Marathon) I heard a BOB yell "GET HIM!" While I had my headphones on, it made me jump a mile.

Back on topic though, did you play any horror themed games??

And does Night Trap count as horror? Or Adventure? Or a sin against nature?

Although it isn't a "horror" game, a scene in a video game that freaked me out was in Max Payne. When he was tripping and was running through the maze that was his house, and that damn baby crying the whole time (getting louder when you got closer to the end of the maze). Crying babies freak me out, maybe I shouldn't tell my pregnant wife that...

You guys have got to play the Fatal Frame series...especially since the first one is based off a true story or whatever...and then the second one is just creepy...while you play, the controller vibrates to the heartbeat of the twin girl that you are, and then when there's a ghost nearby it gets faster and faster... o_O creepy! Game scares the crap out of me still to this day, and I don't even play it...I just watch it...

but then again, I'm a cheap scare...-shrugs-

Fatal Frame is super-creepy. It's probably scarier overall than all the rest of them individually, just because of the pacing. The reason Darkness got my vote, was because of the extra stuff to do, and the fact that the insanity crept into my real life.
