Yeah, Nirvana songs are great for beginners. Easy solos, too.
One of the things that helped me the most was 3 Doors Down. I got the guitar music book for "Better Life" and played the songs along with the CD. It worked wonders.
Oh, if you are really good at tuning (or have a good pedal with a built-in tuner like I do), System of a Down has some great songs that do a good job teaching you palm-mutes, strum patterns, and controlling your distortion. I also learned how to do artifical harmonics from "Psycho."
Hmm...what else...
Green Day is easy four-chord stuff. And you can learn how to do trills.
Oh, yeah, I need to write out the cello part on "The Last Spartan" for you still, MC. Sorry, I'm a total bum.
I think you should play bass guitar, as you play the cello.
Oh, yeah. One of the best things you can do musically to help you get a better grasp of how guitar works is to try and figure out songs by ear. Just play ithe CD over and over and over again and try to figure it out. Eventually, you'll begin to get a sort of instinctive knowledge (at least, I do. I know nothing about guitar/music theory, but I seem to be pretty good at picking out parts now because I've been doing this for so long) of how guitar works. Start out by figuring out the bass line and work your way up into a chord. Not only is it immensly satisfying once you figure out a song and you know it sounds right, but it's also an excellent exercise for helping you write your own music.
