In Bloom is pretty easy, do you have a distortion pedal?

No, I don't think so.

Learn bar chords, "master" the 1-4-5 chord progression (learn to reconize it by ear) and you will be able to play nearly every blues song and a high percentage of all of the rock songs ever written.

Ha, I just learned about the 1-4-5 progression in DRUM lessons the other day. Now if only all guitarists knew it....it would make my life alot easier.

ive been playin guitar for a year and a half, LISTEN TO ME, don't go running off to rock songs, learn well known songs before you move on to rock. just songs that you can play and everyone will know.
learn these first (www.mxtabs.net is the best site):
pink panther
simpsons theme
mario theme
hall of the mountain king (very awesome when distorted)

then move on to some easy rock :
intro to enter sandman (metallica)
smoke on the w/e
iron man
7 nation army (i hate this song)(the white stripes)
crazy train (black sabbath)
everlong (foo fighters) (very catchy!)

and then finally, here are the things ive been working on :
everything by avenged sevenfold (moderatly fast) (lots of tremolo)
everything by metallica (start off with 'one')
everything by as i lay dying (hardest guitar parts ive ever seen)
everything by mudvayne (nuthing is too too difficult)

make sure the whole time your working with tab, learn your chords, notes, and arpeggios/scales. also try your hardest to make your own riffs, if you play other peoples things too much you will lose creative ability.

hope this helps...

Hm.....for good beginner songs, I'd sugest Dammit by Blink 182, The Hell Song by Sum 41, or even the Star Spangled Banner, for that matter. Always practice the fundamentals. Then again, what do I know, I'm a bassist. Nevermind.

Gimpy, don't be an idiot. Comparing the wiimote to the power glove is like comparing sex to dieing.

Learn The Blues scales like the back of your hand and improvise. its the most fun you can have playing a guitar (except all out shredding of course, you cant beat that)

when i started, i learned Naveed by OLP. I started hard, and i continue playing hard. I cant read notes, but i can read tabs, which work just fine.

Yeah, Nirvana songs are great for beginners. Easy solos, too.

One of the things that helped me the most was 3 Doors Down. I got the guitar music book for "Better Life" and played the songs along with the CD. It worked wonders.

Oh, if you are really good at tuning (or have a good pedal with a built-in tuner like I do), System of a Down has some great songs that do a good job teaching you palm-mutes, strum patterns, and controlling your distortion. I also learned how to do artifical harmonics from "Psycho."

Hmm...what else...

Green Day is easy four-chord stuff. And you can learn how to do trills.

Oh, yeah, I need to write out the cello part on "The Last Spartan" for you still, MC. Sorry, I'm a total bum.

I think you should play bass guitar, as you play the cello.

Oh, yeah. One of the best things you can do musically to help you get a better grasp of how guitar works is to try and figure out songs by ear. Just play ithe CD over and over and over again and try to figure it out. Eventually, you'll begin to get a sort of instinctive knowledge (at least, I do. I know nothing about guitar/music theory, but I seem to be pretty good at picking out parts now because I've been doing this for so long) of how guitar works. Start out by figuring out the bass line and work your way up into a chord. Not only is it immensly satisfying once you figure out a song and you know it sounds right, but it's also an excellent exercise for helping you write your own music.

Bob Marley was what I started on, that and Weezer. I mostly play bass and I'm working on Tommy the Cat by Primus. It's rediculous. Kind of off topic, but whatever, and neither of those are rock, but they are good for beginners.

Wrong.

Learn a C Major scale first, then progress to simple chords such as Aminor, Cmajor etc. This way, you'll be better prepared when you tackle songs like Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). By the way, I ain't bull-blam!- you. Guitar tutor of 12 years right here.
