Is this game worth it, I heard it doesnt even have LIVE... I never played halo 1 before.. But im willing to buy it if someone explains to me why its worth it?

Halo Combat Evolved is so worth it, its the first halo and its got such a different feel to it, its campaign rocks hardcore, and you really get into it, its multiplayer is awesome, although i wisih it had live, its still the best.

It's definitely worth it
Better campaign than H2 or H3 and the multiplayer is better if you LAN with friends

Anyone else out there who's weighing the decision -
H-1 is the same core game that the other two were created from.
Yes, those have upgrades that the initial lacked, but, the same basic gameplay is there.
Plus, you get to see the story from the beginning and gain massive appreciation for the whole thing. It's a classic.
Get it.
You won't be let down.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

halo lacking xbl is a very small reason against buying it. as far as the story goes it is still the best of the 3 imo. there was such a great flow to it. the physics are different and the graphics are a little dated (the game is like 8 years old) but it is still one of my favorite games to play.

With respect, I must say the game's over seven-freaking-years-old. It's more difficult to appreciate by people like the OP who never experienced it like most of us did earlier. Doom was a classic, am I going to recommend that everybody play it in this day if they haven't already? No, because they didn't experience it when it came out. We've come far from Halo.

You can simply find a copy of the original Halo for like five bucks on eBay or something, you don't even need to spend fifteen bucks on it.

OMG
Master Chief w/o his Helmet!

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

Question, does the version you buy on live have those black bars around the edges when you put it over 720? I have the disk but I'd pay 1,200 to get rid of those bars. (without putting my box on 480)

Become the hunter.

It's an amazing game to this day, I don't care how old it is. You can probably get it cheaper than $15 though.

It saddens me that there are those playing Halo 3 who have not touched Combat Evolved.

halo combat evolved was the best of the three. halo 3 was the biggest let down to me. but halo combat evolved was marvelous

If you are going to play it, then it is worth it.

Also Silentone2, it still has the black bars... :(

It depends what you want out of the game. If Campaign or story or even music is your aim, then you shouls buy it. Just not off the Marketplace, but rather at a Gamestop or EBGames for $10. If you need multiplayer to survive, You'd be better off buying the Legendary Map Pack or CoD4 Variety Pack(yes, I went there).

Another note: if you do buy it, try to look past the graphics, and pay attention to the smal details, such as atmosphere, details, and noise effects. They truly shape the game.

Halo: CE > > Halo 3 > Halo: Reach = Halo 2

I don't think the graphics are bad at all. There are some graphical things that are better in Halo 1 then in even Halo 3.

1) Bullet shells look real and brass like. Not the yellow fake paper cutouts of Halo 3.

2) Bullet shells remained on the ground MUCH longer.

3) The Pillar of Autumn ship (the main ship you come in on in the beginning of the game) looks amazingly real and scaled to size. The war ships in Halo 3 look like fake plastic non detailed toys, with no depth in comparison.

4) Up close textures of trees, rocks and metal were more detailed.

5) Environmental blood splatter look better, and much more of it. Plus remained on the ground much longer.

Halo 1 still holds up very well graphically, even by todays standards.

And there is just something special about Halo 1 campaign. The music and other things sets the mood perfectly in the game.

I must reiterate: Ignoring the graphics and focusing solely on the gameplay, here, we've come a long way from 2001 and the gameplay is outdated. Fun, to be cherished, like the original Doom, but it came out in 2001.. Sure, there are still many shooters that can take a page from Halo, but to say that it's a fantastic classic that everyone must play is going to alienate people who do wind up buying it and disappoint them due to its age.

Although I personally can appreciate Halo's visuals, they became sub-par in 2004. When games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 came out. I think the Source engine still looks and performs great to this date, around four years after it came out, and that's more than I can say for Halo.

Also, Halo 3's campaign makes no sense if you've never played the original or second Halo. People need to follow these things chronologically.

While i agree with you on the gist of what your trying to say, i'll too reiterate what i was saying about Halo 1's graphics... they still hold up well for being 7 yrs old. See my above reasons.

Also, doom didn't impress me with it's all corridor environments.

True that.
I can't think of any other actual "night" missions in the Halos besides the two in H1.
There are many 'half-light' levels, but the atmosphere in so much of H-1was disturbingly dark and ominous.
It really seemed different.
Fighting Covenant in beaming starlight just doesn't feel the same.

Sadly it doesnt have LIVE support but if you haven't played the campaign before and if you have 3 friends who can come around regularly for versus its worth every penny

and its legendary is actually challenging
