With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I've always been a fan of flame throwers in video games... I'm just wondering how it is in Halo PC (and how good are the flame effects?)...

I've seen it named as the "noob weapon," but I've never heard anything beyond that, really.

It's a good gun. It kills quickly and can kill a group easily enough if they're not paying attention. Hence? People say it's a "noob" gun, because any gun that kills them [i]clearly[i] has to be a cheap weapon.

Egos suck.

Anyhow, I like it. It's the ultimate base defense. You don't even have to score a direct hit on your target; the flames bounce off the walls and often hit your opponent that way.

Also, a body burns after it was flamed to death, so, you can ignite a guy, and the next guy to run over that body may catch on fire as well. Good clean fun.

I'm certifiable.

Yeah, it's a "noob gun", just like the FRG, the rocket launcher, the Warthog's bumpers, the Banshee, the pistol... you get the picture.

I personally like the flamethrower IN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES. It's an excellent base defense weapon, as Shishka points out, and it's good in tunnels or other confined spaces. It's what S.L.A. Marshall called a "nerveless" weapon; you can still use it effectively even if startled or panicked. It can make persistant effects, too, so you can use it to deny an enemy a doorway or passage just by giving it a lick of flame. It also makes a most gorgeous sound... you can almost taste the marshmallows when you hear its basso "whoosh".

It has some serious drawbacks, in that it takes time to kill (I've exchanged kills more than once by toasting someone who blasts me with a rocket just before they die) and the backwash can set YOU alight. I accidentally flamed myself and my entire Warthog crew from the passenger seat when trying to crack the enemy base in Ice Fields... the driver made a turn to ram my target and entered the plume! It's also brutally short ranged; if you can't see them on the tracker, they're out of reach. As a result, when carrying a flamer you've got to carry a long-ranged weapon (needler, pistol, sniper rifle, etc) to back it up.

All in all, I like the flamer and hope that it makes it into Halo2.

-- Steve is imagining what the flamethrower would do to destructable environments, heheheh...

[EDIT: correcting the map name from Chill Out to Ice Fields... I remembered the wrong name for the map.]

Man, I love going to Ice Fields and just sitting in the enemy base. I move around a little once in awhile so they come after me, and pfoof! they're gone. Burned to a crisp. Most of them don't know what hit 'em, which is what makes it such an amazing defensive weapon. You can take a defense at the enemy base and defend it against them, which is especially good in CTF games. Ooh, I like my noob gun. Flame effects look pretty niffty too.

in fact, the flame thrower is definatly NOT a noob weapon. if you run foward, what is something most people feel is a good idea at first, you will die. you need to have at least a little experence before you run off with one of thoese weapons

It's pretty fun against Warthogs. Because the flames go everywhere and inflict massive amounts of damage, you can kill a Warthog full of three people in about a second. Of course, it helps if the hog isn't moving. Usually it's best when the hog is stopped waiting for the flag carrier to get in.

I used to think the FT was cheap, but it's really not hard to take down. Back up while pistoling and throwing grenades in his path.

It helps to play with particles on Low. If particles are turned on high, you can't see anything while using the FT.

Toasted a banshee with one once. He just kept coming in to the cave where I was hiding. Run away when he fires the fuel rod, come back and toast him while he's reloading. Heheh

Found out the hard way that running forward with the FT is a very bad thing. My favorite thing to do is grab a camo power up then run into the enemy base in CTF with the FT. I usually stand by the door and toast their ass as they run out. Very amusing.

I've said this before on another threat. There is no such thing as a "noob weapon" because it's cheap. Every weapon has something wrong with it. Ask me about one on another thread and I'll tell you some downsides. But to not change the topic, flamethrower is a really cool weapon, but not cool when your on fire and feeling the pain. If you really think it's cheap, here's a way to beat the little devil. When you're out in the open, keep backing up and if he runs forward he'll catch on fire himself, making him weaker to kill. If you're already too close like he jumped out from around a corner or in a tight hallway, SHOOT HIM. But more importantly, run up to him and catch him on fire. If you shoot him and his flames kill himself, it still counts as your kill. What a game.

If anything was to be classed as a "noob" weapon it would be the FUEL ROD GUN very annoying when people camp outside your teams spawn with it in CTF...

I dont like the fLame thrower for the simple reason that it deplets rather quickly and has a really short range. (plus the effects for it are unrealistic)

I agree that the range is short, but it reaches MUCH farther then it looks when your using it. It does have a short range compared to other weapons, but its not THAT short. when your using it it seems like you can only hit things a few meters away from you, but actually it reaches quite far. Its easy to notice that when another person is using it.

Oh and never corpse hump a person you just killed with a flamethrower

uh.. It feels Short! i Mean, I play Wolfenstein: Enemy territory and there is a Flame Thrower which by the way has a Medium Range and it feels that way.
