Scouting teaches one more than fire and knot skills. We learn great leadership skills and also learn how to survive on our own in the wilderness (build shelter, find food, cook it, find help, etc)
The stereotype of a nerdy geek with a goofy looking uniform that is too small making a fire out of two twigs is not accurate at all. First off, we use matches, not sticks. If you are too dumb to bring matches when you go into the wilderness, you don't deserve the luxury of a fire. Second, if that doesn't work, we use gas. Third, we don't wear our uniforms all the time. In fact, we only wear them for formal things like parades and such. Fourth, I am tired of listing. No, you don't get a merit badge just for showing you can build a fire. There are many requirements that you must pass off with a merit badge counselor, and it is not as easy as it seems.
We learn great leadership and people skills, too.
So stop dissing us scouts and get a life (only if you've been dissing us and have no life)
Okay? good.
