Well, I'm just thinking of the most logical way the 3 weapon system would work because, it seems that a lot of you are not sure how it might work so here's how it might work:

1.You Originally have 2 weapons an example of this would be:
1.Battle Rifle
2.Smg

2.You pick up, let's say......another Smg for Dual Wielding-John Woo Style
So your Dual-Wielding and you want to melee or throw a Grenade, so you switch to your BR and MC puts the Smg in your left hand in your 3rd Slot.

3. So let's say you wanted to wield 1 Smg, well you would just press the switch button you would would go through your available weapons in this order:
1.BR
2.Smg
3.Dual Smg's or weapon of choice depending on what combo you have

So you would basically just keep pressing the Y button on the Xbox controller(Assuming the weapon switch button is till Y.) to switch to the weapon you want, the animation for this as follows:

1.MC pulls out BR
When Y button pressed
2.MC pulls out Smg
Y button is pressed again
3.MC Dual-wields your second Smg
Press "X" to Stop Dual-Wielding, MC drops the Gun in his Left Hand.

So your opinions and Kudos and Thanks please for unraveling this predicament.

STOP you've got it all wrong it is alot simpler

If you have BR in your slot and 2 SMGs in your hands the very second you switch to your BR, throw a grenade, melee, or board a vehicle you drop the weapon in your left hand and you are now back to 2 weapons in your inventory. You can however reload while dualwielding.

there is no 3rd slot. you have 2 weapins liek in halo 1 but if yu wanna duel weild then yu press x, but if you want to swich back or throw grenade, melee, ect. then you need to drop the other weapon its like just an extra you pick up for quick use its not like a long term thing
duel weilding is like a heat of the moment type of thing you dont use it like throughtout a whole level.

what! that just made it more confusing, i think that all they mean is you carry 3 weapons now because you have a two handed weapon and the dual weild. therefore 1 + 2 = 3 so there will technically be 3 slots for the MC's weapons but two of them will be dual weild

Thats exactly right. There is no third slot. Whomever tried to explain it in the first place has no idea what their talking about.

Actually they confirmed that pressing b while duel wielding drops the second weapon. Y switches to your other weapon(in your ex. the BR) Maybe left trigger, since it has nothing else anymore, holsters the second weapon and throws a nade at the same time.

omg! terminator is right! IDIOTS! (some of you). the only thing he is wrong about is X to stop dual wielding. you hit the melee button to throw down your dual wielded weapon.

fencr505 has it right. good job.

EX. (for idiots) - if you have a BR and an SMG, you may dual wield another SMG in your left hand by pressing Y so you have dual SMG's out. If you switch to your BR with Y your left SMG will drop to the floor, and your right SMG will be stored away. If you melee someone while dual wielding, B, your left weapon will drop. same with gernades.
