Cronin's Law----The New Flood Drinking Game

Console power increases once every four years, while computer power increases exponentially all the time. It will not be more powerful than a PC for long.

True that. I doubt consoles will ever have the power of a PC.

Why:
1. Consoles are bargain computers priced below $300. Computers at that price are crap.
2. Consoles are not really upgradable, while PC's are. You can experience better gaming all the time with a PC, but your power on a console is locked until the next gen console.
3. The magazine that you read has problems. It could be mentally challenged :o

Console Pros:

Cheap and affordable

Stable

Easy to understand for the technologically challenged

Computer Pros:

Better Games

More Games

Easier to control

Free Online Gaming

Better graphics

Adaptability to many roles

Console Cons:

Inferior graphics

Less games

Lower-quality games (generally)

Paid online gaming

Awkward controls (for me)

Computer Cons:

Expensive

Bulky & hard to transport

As soon as you get it, you need a new one.

So true.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

One thing that would lower the cost of consoles is that they need very little programming built in compared to a computer.
I think. I'm computer illiterate, so I can't be sure.

PC's don't always have the better games.

Almost always. It wasn't until the Xbox that I really felt as if the consoles offered any serious competition to the PC market. And even so, the only games I can think of that are truly superior are Halo 1 and 2...

But there has yet to be a good RTS for consoles, and FPSes for the PC are undoubtedly of much higher calibur than console games (with a few exceptions)
Consoles can hold their own in the RPG realm, but mods for PC games ultimately mean that the PC RPGs have a longer effective lifespan.

Point well made.

I would actually generally say that Consoles are far inferior for RPGs (and Starategy games), but can hold their own for First Person Shooters, though the PC does have a greater variety, and therefore more good FPSs. This is due to consoles controls, in my opinion, being most compatible with FPSs and racing games, while RTS and RPGs are normally irritating to control without a mouse.

Yes, because a PC and a computer are really pretty different. I mean, both have memory, a video card, a processor, a hard drive...

It is feasable that the next generation consoles will be more powerful than computers which cost more. Think of the economies of scale that Microsoft or Sony would have on the components (for those of you who don't know, EoS is where buying more of a good lowers the average price). Not only this, but they wouldn't need a very high profit for the consoles, they could theoretically sell them at the price of the components, simply because they make so much profit from the games. After all, you pay £40 for a DVD disc and some paper in a plastic box.

The following article is from ign.com

DICE 2005: Epic on Xbox 2
More powerful than a PC?

February 1, 2005 - During a panel discussion on next generation power, Epic Games' President, Mark Rein, revealed some interesting tidbits about next-generation consoles. First, Rein revealed Epic was working on two next-gen games for Xbox 2 and/or PS3. Rein says that Unreal-level graphics that eat up 5% of a PC's processing power can chomp a massive 80% out of the current generation of consoles. However, having worked on these two unannounced titles, Rein noted the next-gen machines actually surpassed the power of a current PC.

Though no one can speak specifically on either PS3 or Xbox 2, numerous sources have told IGN that Microsoft and Sony are set to deliver consoles worthy of the title "Next Generation."

Any thoughts??? Post'em.

Note it has surpassed the power of the CURRENT PC.

That's cause of the modified g5 (from apple) chip it's going to have... (currently planned, from rumor mills though...)
