Subject: Halo 2 - one or two discs??

1 Disc with loading times slower:  42%

I think I'd rather have Halo 2 on two discs, (one for campaign and one for multiplayer) and have super-quick loading times. Having to wait a minute or two between levels in Halo just pisses me off lol.

I don't care about load times if 2 discs means better graphics and more features go for it.

How does 2 discs speed up loading times?

Halo is slow because it loads the entire level to the virtual memory on the hard drive.

Perhaps because on one disc the data is significantly more compressed than on two discs, and so the Xbox takes longer to read / interpret the data.

You wait 2 minutes for a level to load? Mine takes like 10-15 seconds tops to load any of the levels.
And you might lose the other disc, and also, people are lazy, if you get the sudden urge to play multiplayer, you might not want to get off the couch to change discs, people are just to lazy... keep it on one.

I think the loading time is determined by the Xbox. The newer versions seem to load faster than the old ones. I think they updates some of the systems inside.

lol that is a good point, people are lazy. And no, I don't wait two minutes for a level on Halo to load, just it will probably be longer in Halo 2 than in Halo 1. I only wait two minutes on my other Xbox, the lesser of the two that I have lol.

Oh, incase you're wondering why I have 2 Xboxes, it's because my older one is pretty slow and crappy, it works for Halo 1 (the most important thing, of course), but it doesn't even run some of the newer games, so I knew I needed another for Halo 2. And yeah, you're probably right Hedwig.

I'm not sure how to check that, but if your Xbox works fine a smoothly, and can play all the games and stuff well then theres no need to worry. But one way might be to see if you can play music off of a burned CD, because I've heard that older versions cannot play burned discs.

guys hold up, why would things load up slower in halo 2? hello??? they used LESS polygons, MORE bump-mapping. the bump-mapping shudn't change change how fast the game goes, only how long it takes for them to make the game. sure the levels are gunna be WAY bigger, but hey, they took off polygons, and I'm pretty sure they're gunna make halo 2 much faster than halo1. i dont think bungie took enough time to make halo 1, but u kno thats not the case with halo 2.

um..........they said it had load times way faster than halo 1 w/ all the new content anyways so 1 or 2 discs doesn't matter

I don't know who said that Halo2 on one disc would be "super compressed". That's crazy talk. 5 GB is plenty.

Halo1, uncompressed comes out to just over 1 GB and about one quarter to half of that is the engine. Halo2 cannot be five times the size in data since many of the textures, all the characters and vehicles are repeatedly re-used. Even going to 2GB would likely mean that Halo would be five times larger then Halo1. So I can see it hitting 3GB not much more.

Well, 2 disks is dumb....

Plus, Halo 2 takes up LESS polys than Halo 1 (due to bumb mapping)

The only thing I know is the version first shipped had a fan on the graphics card. Because of overheating problems they changed to fan to a big heat sink. I think they have also made other minor changes, possibly using hard dirves that read/wirte faster. I think if you have bought it since 2003 you would have a faster loading one.

Hey I never said Halo 2 on one disc would be super compressed, just it would be MORE compressed then it would be on 2. And I already know all this stuff about fewer polygons and stuff, and it's all great, (nice work Bungie!), but I was just interested in your guys' opinions. If you would sacrifice having it on one disc for better performance etc. etc.

(Not that it wont have bad performance or anything!)

Oh, here some pure innovation, have the manual for the controls and how to play in the single player one, and have everything to do with the multiplayer and Xbox Live in the Multiplayer one! Now thats some quantum -blam!- right there. lol jk

i have to wait about 2 minutes just to actaully get halo running. my disk has a dent right below the "o" in halo. currently my fastest load time is a minute and a half (about 5 minutes being the slowest), and sidewinder doesn't work. i need to swap disks with someone without them knowing.
