Well, if you have it compressed, you get the info off the disc which would be fast, then spend time uncompressing it.
If you don't have it compressed, it takes forever to get off the disc, but there is no decompressing.
The trick is to find a good compromise to save on bandwidth while not taking up to much processing time. So it's not like 2 discs will be faster than one disc.
And polys bairly take up much space at all, in lightwave(3d program), a sphere with 46080 polygons takes up 812Kbytes(just tryed it). A whole level of geometry (without textures) has gotta be less than 10MB, 20MB tops.... I guess. What takes up more space are textures and crap. So the point is taking a few hundred points off the MC isn't going to make it super crazy faster.
