You could sometimes take that stone from your Capslock.
It gets annoying to watch every single post you write Caps on.

You could have written it down just like everyone else, nice little text without Capitaletters.

Phoenix is dead, long live Phoenix!
Is it?

WOW, Go Mr_Clark!!!!!
Mean chapter, I loved the bit with the arbiter, so awsome.
I agree with konoka about the parts you missed out on, all though if you added them in it might of been a bit to long, so no critism at all

Hey Mr.Clark, you're from Edmonton eh? Awesome! I'm down in Calgary....

Just one question; you an Oilers fan or a Flames fan? (sort of kidding). Incredible stories though, nice to see a fellow Canadian making their presence known online.

Thats probably the greatest chapter ever written.

*takes time to let it all sink in*

I thought it was sweet how the Arbiter's fleet sent out scouts and then jumped to the other side of them. I seriously had an entire picture of that event happening in my head as if it were on a game or a movie.

NEED NEXT CHAPTER!

I suppose I have to explain a few things right now. A lot of people seem to be wondering where exactly some of the developments in today's chapter have stemmed from.

Obviously the biggest change is that the Master Chief has been, well I suppose the easiest way to describe it is to say, "possessed". That doesn't really fit well with me, as you'll see in Chapter 23, that this supposed possession by the First Reclaimer, is not something you couldn't see coming. As for any hints, there's a specific line in the book, Halo: The Flood, that led me to this conclusion, and I'm sure once you guys read it, something will click in your minds.

The Forerunner situation still hasn't cleared up, and I'm going on record to say that it will be explained in Chapter 23. Some of you will have put two and two together before then like Konoka said, and once again there's no restrictions on posting your theories here.

For those wondering how this chapter could have possibly been triple the length, I direct you to that post I made some time ago making the statement that I had originally planned on doing 6 or 7 Forerunner history chapters. This of course was rejected, but I just couldn't let the idea go. There is such rich history in there that I can't help but be compelled to explore it. With that said, when the Master Chief began reliving Cyriacus' memories, lets just say that there was a lot more, a lot. I scrapped the idea after all the damned rewrites I've been forced to do, and that sucks.

Some people were wondering, just how much trouble I had with this chapter over the month and five day period it took to write it. My answer is thus:

I did seven rewrites for the first twelve pages in the first two weeks. Two of those were because I didn't like what I was reading, and the other five were a result of computer troubles/idiotic mistakes on my part. Another problem I encountered was I literally wrote this thing in five different parts. This was a problem, because as I was finishing it up, I realized that the scenes from each part didn't match up so I was forced to go through the whole thing and change a great deal. That is a very exhausting task.

That said, I was incredibly relieved when I finally threw this chapter together and saw that it was complete.

And yes, I'm taking a much needed sabbatical leave. I know its supposed to come every seven years, but after these last few weeks, I figure getting a head start isn't really that bad.

As for the PM's, I'm retiring that system for now. There's just too many pages for me to wade through, and too many people to contact in order to do it. I am literally not exaggerating when I say it can take up to five hours. There's that many people to send them too.

I'll revive the system come the final chapter and for the epilogue, just because it'll be a nice send off.

Now, Mr. Clark is taking some much needed time off. I'll be gone for awhile, so I'm trusting you guys to keep this thread clean.

Oh yes, and pmaster_2001, I'm actually a Montreal Canadiens fan. When I was younger and my father was still in the army, we'd get shipped around every year to a new city, and when I was four years old we were in Quebec City, and one night my father took me to see my first hockey game ever, a Canadiens game. They were playing the Jets I remember. That was a fun night.

Seeing guys like Patrick Roy, J.J Daigneault, Guy Carbonneau, Fredrik Olausson, Teppo Numminen, Bob Essensa, all playing really made an impression on me. If the Jets hadn't folded and became the Coyotes, I'd still be a fan of them as well, but these days I'm still a Canadiens fan. Whenever I get to see them in person it always reminds me of the first time I saw them play when I was four years old and sitting on my father's lap as they played (I was too small to see over people's head).

well, it was pretty good. no it was the best 2-3 hour read i have ever had! It was insanely long and had to have taken me 3 hours (I lost track of time). But I'm still confused about the difference in Purebloods and Halfbreeds and the whole story about the Forerunner War against the Halfbreeds. But I will guess that that guy with Truth is a Half Breed being that he said he needed "sustenance" and "to feed on teh dead brutes with Truth" Hopefully you will explain everything about the MC because I'm also completely lost and confused on that though i'll guess that Jan is a descendant of Chrysanthe (Chrysanthemum anyone?) and MC is a descendant of Cyriacus. Although that could be seen as weird, I'm still confused.

Maybe I'm a slow reader but that chap took 2hrs to read... It was all worth it. I would've really loved to get more info about "the half breeds" and how they came to be, and also would've loved to read those Majal/foreunner history chaps....

Mr. Clark all i can say is.....that was your best chapter EVER!!!!! you have no idea how much i enjoyed it and it was well worth the wait.

Now a few of you might remember when, a while back i made a prediction. And in that prediction i gave reference to the book the flood when guilty spark tole the master cheif that his armor sucked and he needed a better suit. I then made the assumption that clark would use the bad ass armor in his story. Wow i now feel cool, i mean im just amazing for predicting what was going to happen. I should be praised as the prediction king!!! thats right bow down, even you prowlaz

Simply BRILLIANT! Oh my gd that chapter was awesome!!!

The scenes of dreams and such remind me of Final Fantasy the movie. The girls dreams leading to the solution.

Mr. Clark, this is the BEST story I have ever read. It tops the first 3 Halo Novels, which held that title previously.

Keep it up!!! To think I had to wait through a 6 hour shift at work to read the last half!!!

"And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former
master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can
to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this
will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions. But I
would have my masters know that I have changed. And you shall
be my example." -Mendicant Bias

Wow. I was expecting a lot, as your standard is very high, but you have just blown me away. You really do get better with every chapter. This should be the script for the Halo movie.

If your goal was to create suspense, there is no doubt in my mind that you have succeeded. I am bewildered, puzzled, amazed. That chapter had a lot to digest, making the Master Chief, such a controlled character, go insane, and worse, kiss a girl not even half his age. It seems you included an element of pervurt inflence..... Just playing with you! ;) I was shocked by that scene, and I felt embarrassed, yes, embarressed, for a fictional character.

This chapter has been a simply amazing read, as has the entire novel. If you ever get this book published, I will purchase it without a doubt. I would love to learn some history of the Forerunner, for the games and official novels provide little or no information. I hope you go quite deep into their history. I always thought that the Flood were not strong enough an opponent to decimate the Forerunner civilisation (spelt 'civilization' in the U.S. I believe?). A civil war, in which one side mutates and becomes stronger; a very good explanation for the conquest of the Forerunner.

I will look forward to your next chapter, and take as much time as you need. I will be very pleased if the next chapter is one-eighth as good is this chapter. Thank you Mr. Clark, for brightening up our lives with this amazing story.
