I got his sarcasm...one person has to implement sarcasm and then you get a pile of terrorist chipmunks crashing your party, not fun at all..

well we'll now wait in the meantime let us think up crazy ideas of what he will put in this next chapter. Also we must make Bungie read it to show them that this HAS to be the storyline for upcoming Halo.(Apart from where the Spartans die) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I think it was another Gravemind, if it is then Mr. Clark believes that their is one on each Halo ring I guess and I bet that Johnson gets a robotic arm because I think he getting sick of loosing his arm.

Holy hell, i havnt been on the net in over a week and now that im back, what did i have to greet me but the finest piece of writing i have ever read. That chzpter had me on the edge of my seat for like an hour. (yes i know that im a slow reader.)
You truly are a genious Mr Clarke, absolute genious no doubt about it. If you dont get that book your working on published, somebody in the world of publishers needs some sense beat into them. You will go far dude, really far. Im not talking feet here either, i mean like miles. Miles and miles.
Anyways, yer great chapter. Your my hero man!
Peace out-Grim

That chapter is one of the reasons you are the best fanfic writer on the forums, Mr_C. Truly, an excellent chapter, your best so far in my opinion.

Just a question: is the HighComm Facility (ONI etc.) really in Sydney? If it is, then I'm pretty much screwed. I wounder how long it will take them to traverse the few hundred kilometres north to Brisbane?

I thought Ackerson was under military arrest? Didn't Strauss order him to be taken to the brig or something in Chapter 17? My guess on where he's going: as far away from Earth as possible, even though it's probably unlikely. Mr_Clark probably has another fate in store for him.

The final thing I want to say is, How could Jan take down a Flood Spartan with two bullets from a M6C? Even on Normal in Halo 2, that's not enough to take them down. How could Jan kill them that easily? Marksmanship? Luck? Poorly mutated bodies (ie. the Infection Form was sticking out the chest or something)?

I've got a lot of other ideas and questions floating around in my head right now, but I'm not bothered to put them in here. Suffice to say, Chapter 19 is going to answer a whole lot of questions, and will hopefully feature the "Forerunner" from the end of the Chapter. Right now, the MC/Arbiter storyline is looking kinda boring (man, I never thought I'd say that).

He watches every Hodgetwin video they put up...on ALL their channels. He calls them the Hodge Triplets, and considers himself the 3rd triplet. He's started talking and acting like them now. Every other line out of his mouth "Thaaas some BULLLLLL**** maaayne" or "Gotta make dem gainzzzz". He calls his biceps "gains". When he eats post-workout, he talks to his biceps, "Don't worry gains, I'm feeding you. Daddys gonna feed you, gainz *kisses biceps*".

That was awesome, but I too am sad the Spartans had to die. Johnson ownz y'all, for the record. Only, the thing I'm still not realizing is why didn't they just put a 80 megaton HAVOK in the Cruiser? That woulda handled their little flood problem... I wish we coulda seen some with the Arbiter and MC, but we'll get plenty of them in the next chapters I'm sure.

Of the Forerunner... I have a feeling that the MC and Arbiter won't find any Brutes at the Elite's homeworld and will perhaps find Truth somehow and pay him and those Forerunners a nice little visit...

Great chapter, Mr. C.

My best guess is Mr_Clark took a page out of Halo 2's book and decided to make it so that all combat forms can be killed in one to two shots if shot in the chest, i.e. infection form. And I gotta say, DAMN Jan has good aim.

Especially in the situation she was in. Not a chance in hell a mere human, other than a Spartan, could keep his aim steady when three Flood-Spartan Combat forms are coming at you. But it's true that it could be done with two shots; the Spartans did not wear armor, or had shielding, and the Infection form in the chest would've popped.

Hrmm, meandering along here I suppose its my sacred duty to address some obvious concerns with Chapter 18.

Well, certainly the development that has most people calling for my death would be the infection and thereupon death of Fred, Will, and Linda at the hands of Janissary James.

This wasn't a convenient plot twist I created to simply get the Spartans out of my hair in the most evil and mean way possible. The main idea behind this chapter was to get the point across that, while mankind has successfully fought off two Covenant assaults, we're not getting off so lucky when concerning the Flood.

The title of the chapter, Salvation Lost is a direct reflection on the state Earth is in right now. The Spartan 2.0's are dead. Ackerson's Spartan 3.0's are dead. Johnson and Langdon killed what appeared to be another Gravemind, but in the process Langdon and the other Marines were killed and Johnson lost his arm...again. Jan has had a complete breakdown after the battle in the HighCom Hospital, so she's out of action as well.

Earth's not looking too good right now is it? Maybe Ackerson is onto something....

I really wanted to get a sense of helplessness across. Something that I'm quite certain all of humanity has been feeling for quite some time.

When I was planning this chapter out, way back in December when I was hammering out the main plot developments I wanted to have occur in this story, I had originally planned to have the Spartan 2.0's involved with the story, but then took them out because I couldn't see a feasible method to introduce them. Everybody took me to town because of that decision however, and I bowed out under the pressure, quickly reinstating the Spartans role, but keeping them immobilized so they weren't running around.

Then, a few months ago, when I was doing revisions on the story, I remembered that I was planning on having the Flood come to Earth, and that I needed to have a really big, explosive chapter that would keep everyone on the edge of their seat for the whole thing. Also I needed to raise everyone's ire and make them angry and revengeful.

I decided very early on that Fred, Linda, and Will had to die. It wasn't until a short while ago I came to the conclusion that having them be possessed by the Flood, and then making Jan of all people kill them would be the perfect little twist needed to put the icing on the cake for the chapter.

The thing to remember about this story is that there is a recurring theme of solitude. A feeling that you are alone. I've got two characters that run parallel to each other in regards to this theme, the Master Chief and Jan.

John feels separated and alone because he can't relate with the rest of humanity, and is forced to be seem almost as much of an alien as the Covenant are. His only family, the Spartans, are either laid up in hospital beds, dead, or running around the galaxy with his creator, Dr. Halsey.

Jan is a parallel of John, but also unique in that her separation and solitude is more self-made. She has said it more than once in this story: "I don't want to be protected anymore..." and in this chapter she finally got her chance. When the Flood came to the hospital, she was on her own for the most part.

I would have loved to give the Spartan 2.0's a big battle scene to perish honorably in. However, that would have gone against the flow of the story. This isn't about making heroic stands and honorable deaths, the story here is about trying to survive against innumerable odds.

Being infected while lying in a state of helplessness, and then being shot and killed by Jan, that fit. That was something I knew had to happen.

Don't hate me too much. Originally the scene with the Spartan's infection and then attack on Jan, and finally their death was to be written from Fred's (the Spartan) perspective. I decided that was a little too cruel, so I put Jan back into the driver's seat.

As for how Jan was able to kill them. First off, Jan is an excellent shot, which ilovebees informed us of. Second, the Spartans were injured, terribly so. This is why they were in the hospital in the first place. Jan mentioned something to that effect as she was walking towards the room.

The Flood were able to make the connection to the Spartan's nervous system, but they didn't have enough time to adequately repair the damage to their bodies before Jan showed up. I would've put something to this effect into the chapter itself, but it seemed out of place, so I decided that if anyone had a problem with the relative ease with which they were killed, I would make a big long stupid post like this one trying to explain something that I could probably have done in two sentences. But Clark being Clark, I had to write all this out.

Next chapter we'll finally get back to the Chief and the Arbiter, as well as find out finally, what's going to be the reaction of the Sangheili on Silone, the Elite homeworld. They're getting a one-two punch really. 'Eranumee has arrived from Danrun. the Covenant home world, to inform them that an all-out war is being raged, and then the Arbiter will return, bringing with him the information that the Great Journey is a lie, and that the Sangheili must now form an alliance with humanity.

Will they listen....? For that answer and more, tune in same Clark Time, same Clark Channel....

Okay I'm done.

I've stopped reading your Chapters as what if possibilities of Halo, but a world of their own. You have truly crafted a wonderful story, and I look forward for your next chapter as well as the inevitable publication of your own book. Great job.

P.S.
I think that the Spartan 3.0's are not so finished as they were portrayed to be...Maybe in someone closer to the heart of the novel than Ackerson.

Well, after having abstained from posting for well over two months, I have returned to find the Spartans dead, and Johnson's arm severed...AGAIN. This just proves bad -blam!- happens when I go away.

Questions/Comments:

-Okay, I'm sure nobody remembers this, but I was the one who originally threw out the idea of giving Johnson a crazy badass Terminator-ish robot arm. You can look that one up. Now that the poor SOB is once again armless, could it finally come to pass? Fingers crossed....

-Will Chapter 19 be the final chapter?

-Who was this 'Puller' fellow that the ship was named after? If he was a historical figure, then I feel pretty foolish, being an avid History channel watcher.

-Any indication of whether Halsey will be making a return any time soon?

-One more comment: I'm not sure if anyone else saw this, but in the Covenant history chapters, there is a strong sense of deja vu. What I am trying to say is, there is a very clear parrallel between what the Prophets did to the Elites and what the Covenant is doing to humanity. The sense that the Elites were fighting hard, but were slowly being pushed back in the face of superior technology until there was nowhere else to go. Am I the first person to see that?

On your last comment, say hello to the three rankings. ( If you find any others, be sure to tell me. )

Captain Obvious, General Nonsense, and last but not least Major Stupidity.

No offense

As for Dr. Halsey Mr. Clark may make a come back and spill the beans.

Chesty Puller

A truly legendary Marine.

(The following is gleamed from several websites about this heroic individual)

Lieutenant General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller was a colorful veteran of the Korean War, four World War II campaigns, and expeditionary service in China, Nicaragua, and Haiti. He was the only Marine to win the Navy Cross five times for heroism and gallantry in combat.

A Marine officer and enlisted man for 37 years, General Puller served at sea or overseas for all but ten of those years, including a hitch as commander of the "Horse Marines" in China. Excluding medals from foreign governments, he won a total of 14 personal decorations in combat, plus a long list of campaign medals, unit citation ribbons and other awards. In addition to the Navy Crosses, the highest honor the Navy can bestow, he holds its Army equivalent, the Distinguished Service Cross.

Born 26 June 1898, at West Point, Virginia, the general attended Virginia Military Institute until enlisting in the Marine Corps in August 1918. He was appointed a Marine Reserve second lieutenant 16 June 1919, but due to force reductions after World War I, was placed on inactive duty ten days later. He rejoined the Marines as an enlisted man to serve with the Gendarmerie d'Haiti, a military force in that country under a treaty with the United States. Most of its officers were U. S. Marines, while its enlisted personnel were Haitians.

After almost five years in Haiti, where he saw frequent action against the Caco rebels, Puller returned in March 1924 to the United States. He was commissioned a Marine second lieutenant that same month, and during the next two years, served at the Marine Barracks, Norfolk, Virginia, completed the Basic School at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served with the 10th Marine Regiment at Quantico, Virginia.

In July of 1926, Puller embarked for a two-year tour of duty at the Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor. Returning in June 1928, he served in San Diego, California, until he joined the Nicaraguan National Guard Detachment that December. After winning his first Navy Cross in Nicaragua, he returned to the United States in July 1931 to enter the Company Officers Course at the Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia. He completed the course in June 1932 and returned to Nicaragua the following month to begin the tour of duty that brought him a second Navy Cross.

In January 1933, Puller left Nicaragua for the United States. A month later he sailed from San Francisco to join the Marine Detachment of the American Legation at Peiping, China. There, in addition to other duties, he commanded the famed "Horse Marines." Without coming back to the United States, he began a tour of sea duty in USS AUGUSTA of the Asiatic Fleet. In June 1936 he returned to the United States to become an instructor in the Basic School at Philadelphia. He left there in May 1939 to serve another year as commander of the AUGUSTA's Marine Detachment, and from that cruiser, joined the 4th Marine Regiment at Shanghai, China, in May 1940.

After serving as a battalion executive and commanding officer with the 4th Marines, Puller sailed for the United States in August 1941. In September, he took command of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune. That Regiment was detached from the 1st Division in March 1942 and the following month, as part of the 3rd Marine Brigade, sailed for the Pacific theater. The 7th Regiment rejoined the 1st Marine Division in September 1942, and Puller, still commanding its 1st Battalion, went on to win his third Navy Cross at Guadalcanal.

The action that brought him that medal occurred on the night of October 24-25 1942. For a desperate three hours his battalion, stretched over a mile-long front, was the only defense between vital Henderson Airfield and a regiment of seasoned Japanese troops. In pouring jungle rain the Japanese smashed repeatedly at his thin line, as General Puller moved up and down its length to encourage his men and direct the defense. After reinforcements arrived, he commanded the augmented force until late the next afternoon. The defending Marines suffered less than 70 casualties in the engagement while 1400 of the enemy were killed and 17 truckloads of Japanese equipment were recovered by the Americans.

After Guadalcanal, Puller became executive officer of the 7th Marines. He was fighting in that capacity when he won his fourth Navy Cross at Cape Gloucester in January 1944. There, when the commanders of the two battalions were wounded, he took over their units and moved through heavy machine-gun and mortar fire to reorganize them for attack, then led them in taking a strongly fortified enemy position.

In February 1944, Puller took command of the 1st Marines at Cape Gloucester. After leading that regiment for the remainder of the campaign, he sailed with it for the Russell Islands in April 1944. He went on to command it at Peleliu in September and October 1944. He returned to the United States in November 1944, named executive officer of the Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Lejeune in January 1945, and took command of that regiment the next month.

In August 1946, Puller became Director of the 8th Marine Corps Reserve District, with headquarters at New Orleans, Louisiana. After that assignment, he commanded the Marine Barracks at Pearl Harbor until August 1950, when he arrived at Camp Pendleton, California, to re-establish and take command of the 1st Marines, the same regiment he had led at Cape Gloucester and Peleliu.

Landing with the 1st Marines at Inchon, Korea, in September 1950, he continued to head that regiment until January 1951, when he was promoted to brigadier general and named Assistant Commander of the 1st Marine Division. That May he returned to Camp Pendleton to command the newly reactivated 3rd Marine Division in January 1952. After that, he was assistant at division commander until he took over the Troop Training Unit, Pacific, at Coronado, California, that June. He was promoted to major general in September 1953, and in July 1954, assumed command of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. Despite his illness, he retained that command until February 1955, when he was appointed Deputy Camp Commander. He served in that capacity until August, when he entered the U. S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune prior to retirement.

In 1966, General Puller requested to return to active duty to serve in Vietnam, but was turned down because of his age. He died 11 October 1971 in Hampton, Virginia, after a long illness. He was 73.

I named Captain Keyes' new ship after him mainly because as I was writing Chapter 18 the anniversary of D-Day came to pass, and it always makes me think back on the Pacific Campaign during the Second World War. The Marines role in the war is vastly overlooked these days, which is sad.

General Lewis "Chesty" Puller was an amazing man, and when I was trying to think up a name I figured, what better way to pay a tiny little tribute than to name the ship after him.
