I doubt it. Xbox isn't quite capable of managing 32 players in a server at this point in time. You need like a T3 to have 16 players I cant imaging 32. You never know, I suppose its possible but if I ever hear someone stating Halo 2 servers will hold 32 I would be extremely skeptical.

32 people would be awsome, but that is a crapload of players. I'd guess somewhere around 24 players over live, but you never know, they might just leave it at 16. Its too early to tell.

im inclined to say no, purely because the lag would be horribly awful.

It wouldn't take a T3 to run it. The best it needs is Cable, but a 56k...ahh lets not go there...But just imagine the possibilitys of 16 vs 16. Man...you get about 4 people to snipe, 4 assaults, 2 stealth, 4 heavy weap, and 2 mechanic ( vehicle people )...talk about a war...

Bungie stated that they will have "As many players as possible." in Xbox Live games. I doubt it will be 32 players but there is a strong possibilty for 24 since they are doing all these things just for Xbox live. If your gonna tell your friends anything about the number of players in Xbox Live, say that it is more likely to have 24 than 32 players. But don't tell them that Bungie confirmed 24 players because of this post.

Thats what the people from my world call sarcasm. In all the games that I have ever seen on XBL which include the qualities of FPS, explosives, 16 players, and destructable surroundings and structures there is no way you can play a game without freezing for 10 minutes, then finding yourself flying abnormally fast across the map and then loosing the connection. The lag spikes would drive you nuts and prevent you from playing a match. With all the things Halo 2 is capable of (destructable surroundings, explosives, quick pace gameplay, large maps and vehicles) there is no way your going to be able to fit 32 players on an XBL server without unbarable lag and a top of the line connection, sorry.

I dont think so. I am running on cable and a T1 modem. Either way, I dont care because I really dont know much about computers or their aspects. But I know enough to know that Halo 2 cant support 32 players with destructable surroundings, explosives, quick pace gameplay, large maps and vehicles and not have huge lag issues.

Okay, that's a good point! But how well could an Xbox handle online gameplay as a client? Xbox specs damn near meet the mininum requirements for PC games like Tribes, Battlefield 1942, and Planetside. Maybe Halo 2 will be the first Xbox Live game to take advantage of a server other than an Xbox? And, of course, we'll still be able to setup our Xbox as a Halo 2 server.

Bandwidth is NOT an issue, and we have Microsoft to thank for that.
Lag should not be an issue, we have broadband to thank for that.

The biggest issue, in my eyes, would be the clients ability to render everything on screen without any major hits in framerate. Another issue would be voice communication. Anything over 8 players communicating at once would just be chaos, and most importantly, it would eat up a lot of bandwidth. I can see voice communication broken up into channels. Where units can communicate amongst themselves, and possibly, we could give unit leaders the ability to "tap" into other units voice comms. This idea would limit bandwidth straints, and still keep the comm channels open.

Don't forget that the game better have damn good netcode...otherwise it's lag city. And I'm with Twelve Large, my main concern is framerate....it got bad in Halo with just 8 players sometimes.

I'm pretty sure it'll be limited to 16 players, that's what the GI preview said.

If they did it would be on dedicated servers and LAN only. I'm betting they wont have it at all though.

I held a 16 player LAN battle a few weeks ago and that even lagged (dunring a team killing frenzy envolving everyone) but still, war is hell, to be more to the point 16 players is hell, as you are always doging bullets and treading across fallen teammates. So just imagine double that on a game as good as Halo 2. (lets pray for large maps)
