Ok, first, I'd like to say the only reason that this is here and not NM is that I would not get any serious answers there. Besides, this doesn't relate directly to the gameplay. If you want it moved or deleted, MODs, please do so. I don't mean to break any rules.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!
This all starts with the Ark. The ship that Truth went to Earth to search for. There is a simple reason the Ark is called what it is. The Ark was built by the Forerunners to escape the Flood. There is another famous Ark built to escape a massive Flood that would destroy the world, after that Flood was gone the ark would be unloaded for the world to start again. In case you haven't guessed, Noah's Ark. The purpose of this Ark is the same. When the Flood had been released the Forerunner activated the rings and set off to a safe planet, Earth. They intended to return when the Flood were gone and set up their lives again. They never returned. The only thing I can think of for that is the Ark was either badly damaged and they couldn't rebuild it or they chose to stay and assist the Humans. Either that or they are the humans. This leads me to Truth's pruposes with it. The Prophets were engaged in a long war with the Sangheili prior to the formation of the Covenant. The Prophets were probably losing, when they stumbled upon Forerunner artifacts. These artifacts told of the rings and their power. The Prophets then tricked the Sangheili into thinking that they wanted an alliance to find these rings and take the "great journey" the rings would send them on, with the Sangheili. Then the search for the Ark was on. Truth knew that he needed the Ark to save himself and the other Prophets when the rings were activated. The Covenant swept across the universe till they found that the humans had it on there planet. Therefore the war with the humans. This is all to defeat the Sangheili. So the Covenant finally find Earth. The events of Halo 2 occor and then Truth makes his escape to Earth after the failure to activate the rings, leaving Tartarus to do his dirty work. Truth then seeks the Ark to make his escape when the rest of the Covenant activates the rings killing themselves and the Sangheili.
That is my theory on this whole thing. Long, yes, but it makes sense. If someone who knows is reading this please PM me and tell me if I'm right.
