One of the unspoken greatnesses of Marathon is the Multiplayer. It seriously gives Halo a run for its money (if you can find 10+ friends who don't -blam!- and moan about gametypes and teams then I'll concede Halo's better).

Aleph One makes things "easier" by giving us TCP/IP. Of course, you have to find someone else's IP and when they play. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

has anyone here actually played Marathon MP using TCP/IP and if you have, please share your settings. The reason is because I played A1 MP the other night with a friend and had horrible lag ("barely" playable is being kind). The Aleph One FAQ itself concedes its barely playable. Has anyone had any luck?

My Settings:

Macintosh G5. Marathon 2, Alpeh 1.
Cable modem, 640x480 res, millions of colors. (guessing) .5 fps.

vs. G4, M2A1, cable modem. (about 10 miles away). (bad lag as well).

Any suggestions or success stories?

Ach! Was ist los?

I don't know about Internet support, but LAN play using TCP is a blast. Last week I spent an hour and a half trading rockets with a buddy in Thunderdome, and six and a half in Evil coop with my brother the next day.

My Settings:

iMac G3 500Mhz, Marathon Infinity, Aleph 1
Cable Modem, and it's always good practice to turn everything down to the lowest resolution possible when playing AO tcp/ip.

vs. Many different machines (all macs)

I've had lag before, but never so much as to make the game unplayable, even when playing with up to six people. And as you can see, I have a much lower end rig than you do. This could be a compatibility issue. Make sure both you and your friend have downloaded and installed the latest stable build from source.bungie.org. Also, many times a firewall will cause problems: make sure both you and your buddy have holes punched through your firewalls for your respective machines. And always, always follow the Aleph One port forwarding instructions. If any of you are behind a serial buss (like a home network or something) you’re going to have to put some holes in that also.

Other than that, you’re probable just going to have to troubleshoot until you get it right. That’s what I had to do. Took about an hour, but now it works just fine (my iMac at least, I’ve has some trouble getting AO PC to work on tcp/ip)

If you have any more trouble, you could try the marathon story forum, or the orbital arm.

ugh, you're probably right about the firewall issue. i had suspected it by didn't want to admit it could be it. Good to know I still have some suspects to troubleshoot though, but I am not good at telling my firewall what ports to make open. Whenever I get good at networking stuff the software changes. ::begins reminesicing over Command and Conquer Classic LANs, whcih was through serial ports and printer ports::

I'm gonna try and check that tonight. Will tell how it goes. . .

Does running other apps seem to affect MP? I try to run only iChat (AIMS) as a means of communicating with my adversaries.
