Hey all,

Just set my PC with Halo for the first time this year since moving house.

I had to change my service provider and download the v1.06 update before i could attempt to get online.

Theres a wee problem though.

When i select Get List, i am lucky if i can find more than 50 servers rather than the usual 400+.

I have tried to ping the EU bungie servers and get a timeout and packet loss of 100%.

My first post questions are?.........deep breath.

1. Do i have to phone my new broadband provider and curse them over the phone?

2. Is there a problem with the new patch?

3. Are GameSpy to blame?

4. Have bugie and microsoft found out about my dodgy past and banned me from using most of the servers?

Any info would be appriciated.

Cheers,

FranksaTank.

Get Well Soon.

Sounds like it's your ISP's fault. I'd contact them to see how fast a connection you have. Saying 'cable' means nothing. 'Cable' could mean 128kb/s, 256kb/s, 512kb/s, 1mb/s... it could mean anything. Sounds to me like you have the lower end. A lot of people blame 1.06 for problems with Halo but personally I've never had any problems neither has anyone in my clan or my friends so I think it must be a question of luck. Gamespy are never to blame over stuff like this. Bungie and Microsoft don't admin their servers, they don't ban Anyone and they let the worst TKers roam free without consequence.

I tested the connection speed on adslguide.org. Its around 512kb/s.

I take it Bungie have not moved their servers?

Then again, Halo PC's multiplayer has alwaysbeen pretty shabby. What was Bungie thinking, did they get the wrong department to write the netcode or what?

Gearbox didn't do the greatest job of porting it. Let's just say that Bungie is barely at fault...

I'd say it's your ISP. I used to 256 DSL and I'd get 200+ servers with 1.06. Now that I have 3mbps I get way overloaded with servers.

That explains a lot, I always questioned Bungie's decision to add the FRC to multiplayer. Not to mention the "sneaky" lag that everywhere. (There may not be any visible lag, but your shots will never be in real time)

Actually, the FRC was Bungie's idea. People said they wanted it, so they threw it in, but they were already concerned about Halo 2, so they didn't do much testing, and so didn't realize how overpowered it was (hence why it's not in Halo 2 multiplayer).

Otherwise, Gearbox's problems came in several flavors. The first was that the shaders they made were a little too demanding for the visual quality you got. Second, the net code caused lag, that, yes, did result in problems with shooting accuracy. You actually sometimes don't want to lead the target with your reticle - mostly you want to be a 1/2 inch behind it. Gearbox was rushed by M$, and, well, you can see the result. We can only hope that the port for PC is done by another company, or M$ gives the company doing it a bit more time.

I dunno how many servers I get but this is what my speed is (I'm on a wireless connection with one other and sometimes two other PCs)

Downstream 640 Kbps (80.0 KB/sec) 691 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 281 Kbps (35.1 KB/sec) 303 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I checked mine using the same website, I'm paying for 1mb/s but I'm actually getting 1.2mb/s, which is pretty darn cool. That's like 20% extra free bandwidth.

This happened to me also. it wasnt an ISP problem for me. This maybe y u r having problem seeing servers: go into the internet lobby and click get list, if there are not many servers click the little halo or circle looking object in between the Words MAP and GAME. That should fix it. If not then it is prolly an ISP issue.

Heyyo,

Some people report having probs with their routers and firewalls, check and make sure ports 2302 and 2303 are opened.

As for gearbox being rushed? true... but there was no rush for HaloCE, and the netode in that is still pretty shoddy in that. They pretty much just improved the rl warthog, that's it...

The main prob with the shaders on HaloPC is they weren't even "fast shaders" and the ones for HaloCE have it, but it still feels very slow compared to ones in for eg Half Life 2.

*Sighs* HaloCE's a lost cause, and HaloPC's starting to feel like one too..... my fav online fps going to crap... Havn't played HaloPC inna week, but I've been playing a lot of BFV. EA & DICE cares aboot that game at least. I see over 17 EA servers, 3000+ players. They care aboot weapon balance more than Bungie & m$ too. One of the major ones is they removed the big m40 from the l.a.w. setup and replaced it with only a decent rifle, so that's cool. Next they need to make the NVA's anti-air rocketlauncher more homing, since its homing REALLY sucks, and it's too easy to kill in the USA helicopters, and extremely hard in teh nva's heli... I dunno if they'll get around to fixing these since BF2's in the makings, but we can hope..
