I have 2 PC's behind a netgear 54mb router. Both can connect to LAN or Internet Halo with no prob. But, try to connect to same game (internet) and one will, the last one to try is unable. I think the game see us as one enity. I read as much as I could about ICS, basically a shared internet connection. Is this not possible to work around??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Because you are sharing the same router and modem it won't work. I'll give you the best explanation I can.

In a normal game, say you set it up. You send out server info through your router and modem to the other gamers, who send you info through your modem, to your router, to your server. In the situation you're describing, it's not possible for one computer. Basically, one computer's upload/download info would have to go out through your router and modem, do a u-turn in cyberspace, and then come back - and that won't happen with a normal game.

The only way you can get both computers sharing a router into the same game is for you to set up a LAN game. Then, the whole situation changes, because a LAN game's dynamics are much different than a net game's. The actual router acts like the internet. One computer recives and sends info as the server through it's ethernet port, and the others recive and send info as the other players.

If you didn't understand that last bit, think about it this way. In a LAN game, your router suddenly becomes the no-mans area between all of the gamers. In a normal net game, the internet is the area between the gamers.

So to answer your question, no, you can't have both in the same game. You'd need to have two different routers, two different modems, and two different ISP connections. Otherwise, you could only play a LAN game.

I'm not sure if that's true since I've hosted games on the net which my friends in canada and my sister on my home LAN (UK) have both been able to connect to. Sounds to me more like he trying to use the same product key for both versions, as most people attempt to do when playing LAN games. I admit I tried that once, and it didn't work so I bought another copy. And another for my g/f. And another when one broke. Lol.

Thanks SexyLegs and Skippy.... I have bought 3 copies Halo and LAN works great. But, I can't help but think there must be a way to configure the router and or ISP so that each system gets it own IP address and appears that way to the outside world. Come to think of it...... Battle Front works fine.

In any case..... I think I can smell my neighbors wireless router over here..... hummm

Thanks again

If it's not passworded, borrow some bandwidth from time to time lol.

About your issue though, I'll check to see if I was right about what I said before.

EDIT:-

OK I just checked, I hosted Halo Dedicated Server 1.06 on my machine using the -port 2301 command parameter. I then loaded up Halo and joined my server. I then got my sister, on my home LAN (internet goes into modem/router combo box), to join the game sucessfully, then about 2 minutes later a dude on the internet joined my game, presumably from the UK since his ping was 80ish, mine was 33 and my sisters was about 40. So basically this proves it's possible to host, join, have other LAN members join and remote players too.

Thanks again Skippy..... your right. If I create an internet game and try to get into with the other PC, by LAN or Internet, it works. Unfortunatley, that's not the problem, I want 2 PC's in my house to get on a internet game that was created by whoever (outside world). I really appreciate your time Skip......... Now I just wonder.... why do ya Brits like AMD so much? I live in Austin, TX just down the road from where they are made but, I'm just not to fond of those chips.

Brits? No, all gamers know that AMD's are better for gaming. See, the Pentium 4, for what you get, is overpriced. The AMD is a low price for what you get. AMD's do better at gaming, while Intel's perform better at stuff like multimedia work.

Thing is, Intel has told everyone that it's all about the clock speed. Heh, not true, my 2.6GHz AMD that cost me $230 runs faster than an Intel P4 3.6GHz that costs $450.

In addition, the FSB on my chip is 2GHz, while the max on any intel chip is 800MHz right now.

Why aren't you fond of them? They rock compared to Intel. Intel, the way I see it, is a big joke. It's all about AMD. They make a cheaper yet better processor.

Basically everything SLD said. AMD are cheaper (a Lot cheaper), more power efficient (Intel's use 5 times as much energy, someone had a link at some point to a graph), they're cooler regardless of load, they're reliable as hell... oh yeah and the new ones are 64-bit, which means you won't have to buy another chip when you want 64-bit windows in a year or two.

I think it comes from my experience with them from the early to late '90s. I used them only for my PC's. But, since the down turn in the economy, the price diff is not that much.... here anyways. I just bought a 3.2Mhz for $200. I think another problem is that Microsoft and Intel are in bed together.

Maybe I'll consider them again next time around.

Now....... what about my halo problem??? LOL.

Heyyo,

Dude, try and buy those cpu chips factory direct, you'll skip the huge retail price! discount! :)

Ok, I bet I know how to fix this. Remember guys, how WAN's know how to send info to other computers sharing the same internet connection ip (external ip,etc) is by PORTs. Try changing one of the computer's ports to a different one. Start up halo:

options > network options

then try and change ports 2302 to 2304 and 2303 to 2305.

so before:

2302
2303

and after:

2304
2305

that should help.

Thanks for the time MarD. Yep... I tried that before I posted here and it didn't work. Theres something that I'm missing here and I think It would be a change in my router settings.

I have a similar problem. I have a desktop and laptop, connected both to a router, then the router to the modem, both linksys networking equipment. I was able to have both play online, and join games. No problem. I could not setup a game between the 2 computers, so my friends could learn the maps without too much fighting going on. Then I port forwarded the ports to the ones above, 2302 and 2303, and now I can play the laptop against the desktop. The only problem I can't fix, is that the laptop finds about 600 servers, with 2700 people or so, and the desktop finds about 30 servers with 100 people. I haven't found anything wrong with the desktop yet. The router settings affect the whole network, so it must be something in the network settings of the desktop. Its ok, I guess, because we find one game in the 30 servers, and then I just join that ip address. Anyway, if anyone knows of anything, please post
