Hey, I'm from America and I don't get it either. It's way overrated, I think.

A bunch of huge guys runing into eachother trying to get a oddly shaped "ball" down a field...makes no sense to me...

  • 02.07.2005 10:10 AM PDT

What is so great about the World Cup? Just a bunch of guys in shorts kicking a ball and maybe scoring every once and a while.

What I am saying is that it is as important as you make it out to be. Many people in America believe football (American football) is an exciting game, whereas they think soccer (real football) is boring. The same thing can be said about baseball, hockey, basketball, or any other sport in the world. There are some people who actually think curling is an exciting game (what are the brooms for again?).

It's just something for people to get excited about. It's become a National Tradition, and therefore will never end. Most people force themselves to be excited about it in fear of appearing un-american. It's just an American tradition for American people (And anyone else who decideds to be intersted of course). I, personally, don't give a flip about it, but still went to the Super Bowl party and rooted for a team. It's just fun to get caught up in something, and anticipate an unfortold outcome.

I'd rather watch curling over American football anyday. And the brooms are for the wiping of moisture out of the path of the weight, to change the amount of friction the weight is being subjected to. This allows them to change the speed and direction of travel of the weight, in order to get it in a better position.

Why is it called American football. They dont seem to kick it much, and it looks more similar to rugby, so why not American rugby?

The best thing about the Superbowl is that the Patriots won.

I know, I know. I was just kidding. Apparently someone is a curler (is that what they are called?)? I didn't mean anything by it if you think it is a great game, I was just using an example (who would've thought a curling fan would be on bungie.net?).

its a game of chess, with humans,

its anticapation, and reaction. strenght and speed, vision, teamwork.....

am. football is great,
and so is soccer... they are all really the same game
soccer leads to aussie football, which leads to rugby, which leads to football....
all of them are great sports,

OH and curling the brooms are used to speed up the stone, and make it curl in the right direction... if its going to far right, a couple good scrubs to the left make it go left, etc etc....

i'm from Scottyland too and i hate football (soccer to all you Americans) and i don't like American Football. I don't understand why in America they need big pads and big Helmets. In Britain there is Rugby and it's similar to AF. They run around searching for a ball knocking each other over. Rugby player only wear T-shirts and Shorts even when its snowing or raining.

Above comment has also been made by Gile in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I found it really funny (in Buffy that is).

I play rugby. Its much funner than soccer. "Oh look I kicked a ball now I must take my shirt off and run around in circles." Not fun to watch. Unless you like that.

I would have to say I like watching good international football (proper football, not the American variety) games. If they are exciting matches they can be good fun to watch (even if Scotland do lose 99.999999% of the time), but I never bother watch club matches, as I am not that into it.

Without the "big pads" and "big Helmets" I can think of several players in just the playoffs alone that would have sustained career ending injuries or death (assuming it was played at the same intensity it is now). Despite popular belief the pads only protect against the most severe of injuries and is still a very painful and dangerous game.

Ok, I from England. I know the Superbowl is a massive thing. I mean they paid Paul Mcartney like £2,500 a second to perform there. 1,000,000,000 people whatched it worldwide but I just don't understand American Football. I mean to me it just seems like stopping and starting for about on hour.

Please could someone explain.

Normally I don't care too much about the SuperBowl either (I'm more of a college football fan), but this year was a huge deal 'cause I'm an Eagles fan (not only do they have a few BYU players, but my dad has sold rings to both Chad Lewis and Reno Mahe). But, the SuperBowl is like the World Cup.

Personally, I've never been much a fan of "futbol," or soccer as we call it here in the states.

It's just a culture thing, I guess.

We use pads and helmets 'cause we're smart.

Also, your average AF player outweighs your average Rugby player by about 75 pounds. Now, I don't know about you, but if I'm a 220-pound Running Back, driving the ball down the field and sprinting at top speed, I'm gonna want something to absorb the impact when I run into a 250-pound Lineman or a 220-pound Linebacker. The object in football is to run as fast as you possibly can, so that when you hit someone you have enough momentum to flatten them. When you weigh a lot and can run really fast, you're gonna wanna have pads otherwise you either die or suffer serious injuries.

And Football is still really painful. Have you ever been nailed in the arm by a facemask?

Actually, I'm pretty sure you've probably been stepped on with cleats. Not fun.

Well it's more a thing of personal taste and interest.Just like 1 person may like fish the other may not,now apply that to sports.Another reason that it is so big is because of the large amount of marketing and money that goes into it.Not to mention a few good commercials now and then.
