There's always one formula since the days of Doom online that help a player get better.
1) Practice.
This means getting your ass handed to you day after day until you pick up on what other players are doing, and how they're doing it. Plus you have to realize, Halo: C E was NOT designed for 16 player games like most XBC games run. So, if it feels cramped and overly crowded, don't fret, adjust your attack. Use the environment to your advantage. Use hills to drop on enemies, use gullies to hide, use a barrack to run behind when you see a rocket aimed at you. If you're surrounded by guys with plasma, drop a few grenades, pray and see if you take any to hell with you.
2) Learn your strategies.
Learn how players move themselves around on the map. Playing as a team is incessantly hard on XBC because there's no communicator (to my knowledge) and NO TEXT MESSAGES! So how are you supposed to know where your team is going? Follow the leaders.
Also, figure out, roam around maps and scope them out. What's the best way to attack? Least accessible? Etc, etc. Learn to take in a situation in once glace. It's not easy but it becomes so eventually. Know where the enemies will be. On your 6? 3? 9? 12? All numbers of the clock? Stick it to memory and learn to adjust.
Last but not least,
3) Have fun and be patient.
You don't get better by being serious all the time. I rememeber starting with Doom and Quake. I got my butt handed to me a few times, but I learned quickly and got the hang of it to the point when I picked up Halo, the only thing that took a huge adjustment was the controller. Aiming and everything else came natural because I was used to it. But remember, it's a game. Don't complain if you die all the time, I know it's not fun at first but you'll learn and get better!
Hope this helps!
