Ever heard of http://www.omidyar.net/home/ ? This is a revolutionary web site that has a sophisticated Feedback system that works wonders in creating a positive and excellent website. Go to the link and then go to "Learn how feed back works" link in the news box. This is trulely amazing and would clear up huge issues that bungie is dealing with right now like spam.

To sum it up right here. Omidyar has created a postive community using feedback. Every account upon creation is granted a small bank of feedback points which can be used freely to promote or demote and disscusion or event that one reads. In the end the entire web page was drasticly changed due to the evolution of postive communitcation. For example-If a indivdual starts a conversation that is truley heartfelt and meant to benifit the society that person gets postive feedback which in turn makes it seen by more people. If a person started a negative conversation that was being cruel or usless that conversation would almost imeediatly get negative feedback making it seen by fewer and fewer people.

Please check this system out and try to promote the postive things in us all.

Oh and Bungie, I think you really need this in a bad way.

The bungie.net team is working on a few ways to improve quality of the forum...what you need to understand is that the bungie.net web team is very small. They only have one or two full time programmer(s). Right now their priority is to keep the site running smoothly and fix bugs. Eventually they'll have time to implement some cool features...

That is understandable but just do me the favor of reading about this site. It is rather educational and should be the building blocks for ever web page. How can bungie have so few resources for web programing? that seems absurd to me. How many copies of H2 were sold now?

Only Becausae I'm Awesome

Forum Tutorials --- WATCH THEM AND LEARN

The only problem with that is, there are almost 700,000 members here, and the vast majoroty of them are idividuals. If the Bungie web team made the unfortunate decision to let the people have what they want, it'd be hell on earth. To the power of 7 billion.

It's hardly revolutionary and I've seen it in several other places. What you have to realise is, it'll only really work with mature users who will rate content well, with so many immature and disruptive members of Bnet it would work to the good members' disadvantage. If anything, it'd focus more on the poorer topics and that just wouldn't look professional nor inviting to decent members.

Majority rule is never a good thing when the majority are ignorant. On a few other forums I have seen (Weebl and Bob) they have a feedback system where a person gets "+ed" for making funny or good posts, and "-ed" for being a spammer. There are rewards for high feedback, like custom titles and avatars.

However, due to the nature of those forums, there is little immaturity. The mainstream Halo community is much worse (just play matchmaking), and a lot of the "idiots" end up on here spamming and flaming.

This is system is very different. None of you have read the page have you? Basicly i still believe it can work with immature users mostly because this system wouldn't be used much by immature users and this system will bring out and promote the people that do use it benificialy. You see this system buries immaturity where people can't see it and brings out the important discusions.

An from what i've seen on thos topic (which hasn't had a single immature comment) there are a few resposibly members on bungie, and why not give them a better society to work in?

Oh and this system doesn't give all the power to the people I don't understand what you guys are arguing. Why don't you read into it before you argue against it.

Bungies website aint their main concern, it's making great games. And the small staff is mainly cause all the people on it are good at what they do like Marty O Donnel, Jason Jones, the writer guy now has us all guessing what his symbolism is now...

I read it, and I am not arguing for nor against it.

It's very similar to a proposed "karma" system that was mentioned by Achronos (and Sketch too if I recall) as a possibility that was being "considered" for Bungie.Net.

Such ranking and feedback systems are helpful and work beautifully if the membership is calm, rational and reasonable. Those are traits that I like to see in every Bungie.Net member, but I am often saddened when I don't see it.

does the mean me? Oh yeah you might not want to ever go to new mombasa again if that saddens you, you might get deppressed and commit suicide...

The problem with any publicized ranking (rating, feedback, karma, whatever) system is that as soon as it's operational parameters are understood, a small group of people are more than happy to exploit it for their own personal gain. No system is without flaw, and whenever the thresholds, scoring and consequences are clearly laid out, people spot and take advantage of those flaws..

he's right about the personal gain thing, the whole system could work but if i know this site, which of course i practicly don't, then I think it would cause more harm and bannings then it would cause happiness and rejoiceing Karma will die out when mods get pissed enough with it and realize it will fail eventually just like democracy without socialism put into it.

It's one of the reasons that I respect XBL's decision to not explain the inner workings of their feedback system. By keeping as much of a "black box" as possible, they are keeping everyone guessing as to how it works. People can say that they "know" how the XBL feedback system works, but at best, they are only making educated guesses and in most cases they are rampantly speculating.

If a member ranking system is deployed at Bungie.Net, I would be somewhat surprised. Currently there are only 3 main "levels" of membership: Bungie employee, forum moderator, Bungie.Net member. Yes, I know, there are some specialized ones, but I said "main levels". By not having tiers or levels, everyone is "judged" based on what appears to the right of their member name. I get the impression that Bungie is not enamored with the idea of creating a caste society amongst the fan community.

If a karma (or other) ranking system were to be used, I would imagine that the desired goal (of Bungie) would be for it to be as invisible and as non-intrusive as possible. Negative feedback might restrict a member from certain functions, positive might allow additional features, but I do not believe it would be shown next to their avatar as a sort of "rank" or "badge". The post count feature (for the short time it was accidentally left "on") was a good example of why that is not (IMO) how Bungie wants their fans to see/view each other.

Ranking should be left the XBL and bungie forums don't need ranks. Ranks make a forum a thing of a game where the most populer person wins. In that case almost half of this place would side against the other half instead of just plain arguing, I like it better when everyone is in a communist form of government with the SS just minutes away.... My dream land..., yeah well this forum is notorius for arguing so karma would never work, I mean hey, i respect it where it does work, but thats probably not here. These forums are not a game, they are a matter of life and socialist death...... DAMNED BE THE WESTERN POWERS!!!

I think that as a compromise this system can be used soley to organize message boards, ranking individuals does get risky but you can start with the messeging system, it could take care of a lot of repeated information.

Tom Achronos
Bungie.net Overlord
twitter: http://twitter.com/Achronos

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

As I've stated with the old karma post, such a karma system would only exist to provide people with attachment and consequence to their login. Your login is your reputation here, and being rewarded for not being a prick (extra avatars, etc) can be handy. Negative feedback has problems, because of how it can be easily abused. Some people even wear it like a badge of honor.

Our real problem here is that their is way too much noise to weed out the good posts. We're adding search soon to help mitigate that. I also am thinking about taking a page from the World of Warcraft playbook and seeing if I can get a special icon on the topic page show up if a moderator or a bungie online team member posts in a thread. Although I don't know if that is possible with this forum architecture, so that one may have to wait.

Things like a karma/feedback system would only be useful after the more basic things like search are in place anyway.

Devil is Double is Deuce and Joker always trumps Deuce.

Achronos, aren't you guys a little worried about the potential for someone to dig up an old, long dead thread? Will there be a function that prohibits posting in a thread that has been pushed back to a certain page?

(I'm referring to the upcoming search function)

Well! i sure am happy to get the Overloads attention. Thanks for the discussion. Now to make the web a better place please check out Omidyar in more depth and experience it in first person because i think it may one day be a good part of any web page.

Bungie.net was revolutionized whenever the new forum was available. I took it as a more bad than good revolution. At least things are improving though.

It's free so I'm not complaining. Although there should be a requied "class/lesson/post" for new people, that must be read in order to post so they can see the rules and most of all learn them (not everyone reads the stickies, terms of use, or code of conduct).

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

Few people really read that. I didn't. I'm assuming that by "supposedly" you are saying that you know it too. I like the quiz idea.

They (Bungie) pay the ****load of money to keep this place up and running, so they can do whatever the heck they want with it. My Website recently (The last two weeks) had some severe problems with an unruly member, and if you tend to learn anything, you learn that websites always work best when the administration have complete and total control in each and every area. Otherwise you submit the website that YOU pay for to digital anarchy, and we all know how messed up that can be. Bungie's done a great job so far, and the place keeps getting better and better by the day. I think if a lot of people stopped whining about flamers and newbs and simply came here to enjoy the place rather than try and tell bungie how to run it, we'd ALL be better off.
