WARNING! INCORRECT USING THIS FEATURES MAY CAUSE YOUR SYSTEM BROKEN!

I'm looking in to getting a new graphics card for my PC (I currently have an 8400 GS) but I was wondering if I should get the nVidia 8800 GS or the nVidia 8600 GS or any other card in the $200 price range also it has to be PCI Express otherwise I'll have to get a new motherboard too, oh and I'd like to be able to play Halo 2 Vista in widescreen so the picture doesn't get streched. Anyway thanks in advance and please help me with this.

Not sure what you are asking. Obviously an 8800 is better than an 8600.

yea but is the 8600 good for the $60 (which is really about my limit but I could strech it) does it do 1440X900 easily with no lag on halo 2 and COD 4, also if I get a PCI Express 2.0 Card can I use it in a regulare PCI Express port?

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Yes, PCIe 2.0 cards are compatible with PCIe x16 slots.

If you can scrape up ~$45 extra somehow, get this card.

That's what I have, except this one has 512MB RAM instead of 256MB RAM.

It runs CoD4 and H2V on max settings for me at 1280x1024 resolution!

Three things to do when considering buying a new graphics card:

1. Check what gets you the most bang for your buck.

(First group when you click the link below)

2. Understand what caliber videocard you want, in comparison with others on the market:

3. Check the digital tabloids for some coupons and pricecuts:

I recommend the 8800 GT OC. It's just starting to come down in price to under $200 bucks, and delivers graphics that match the Xbox360. Plus, NVidia has a better compatibility history than ATI, based on my research. But other people here may disagree. GL on your purchases.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I have had nothing but great performance out of my nVidia GeForce 8800. It plays Gears of War better than on 360! Worth getting.

Did you see his second post that said his limit was around $60, but he could stretch it?

$200 is a pretty big stretch.

thanks guys I could get the 8800 GS but it would take a little longer to save up for it. I have the money for the 8600 but is it worth getting the 8800, how much better is it? oh and can you use the old PCIe with the PCIe 2,0 ports just need to know this if I upgrade my motherboard. thanks

The "8800 GT" can be purchased for only $130. This is well worth saving an extra 50 bucks for, as it is the "most bang for your buck" videocard according to the first link I offered.

thanks, and I tried the links but kinda got lost...
oh and I'm seriously considering getting the 8600 cos it seems to do what I want for the money it costs, CoD 4 on most High with 1440 X 900 thats about what I want so I guess halo 2 would play in about 1280 X 800 with most high. I still have a few days to decide, someone try winging me back to the 8800, the reason I'm considering the 8600 is because I can SLI them if I save up enough to get a 2nd =)
go here to see the vid about the card I'm looking at

Get 9600 GT! Very advanced, good bang for buck, and some serious power.
Not high end, but definitely got some good power, with out full AA i can run CoD 4 with a top of 90 FPS in my lone Gainward gold sample. (Full graphical settings too)
