This post concerns the origin of the Spartans.

In the second book of the Halo trilogy, Halo: The Flood, Master Chief seems to recognize the Forerunner language though he cannot remember how he does this. I believe this might relate back to how Dr. Halsey (spelling?) discovered the 150 Spartan candidates in the first place: genetics. If humans truly are the offspring of the Forerunners, then perhaps these candidates had the strongest traces of the Forerunners' genes. This might explain why Chief "knew" what to buttons to press at certain times. Humans have an inbuilt function for language in our brains and perhaps the Forerunner language was carried with the genes.

This seems plausible but tell me what you guys think. This was a sudden idea while reading the book so it might not be that great.

You really shoudn't have named yourself "newguy". Because I have a feeling that you'll be here for a while. And join the ranks of Reiginko, Shai Hulud, Barron Banshee, and MakaVeli4LIfe1. If your post keep the correct spelling and punctuation. Other people may consider me among those ranks, but I don't.

i do agree with your idea.
i have thought about the forerunners and gone throught many ideas but i jest can't put my finger on.
especially in the book "the flood" and the game you hear and read 343 Guiltyspark start talking about human history during the last level in the game and in chapter 12 in the book.
me and my dad found that really interesting.

Good observation. Have you read First Strike yet? It includes subtle references to that idea, too. We'll see what happens in Halo 2, won't we? I for one cannot wait to see how the story unfolds.

Don't frown on ideas that come suddenly at any time, they're often the best ones--write them down!

And welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I've been browsing the forums for some time but never got around to creating an account. I haven't read First Strike yet because I bought both The Flood and First Strike today (almost done with The Flood already). I've been a Halo fan since the day it was realeased and have already caught Halo fever. I can't wait for the 9th: it's just so far away. Anyways, I'm glad to join the community and hope I can be a benefit in some way.

I figured I should at a little more evidence to my argument.

On page 170 of Halo: The Flood, there is a paragraph that offers some insight into the origins of Master Chief's knowledge of the Forerunner language. The scene takes place in the Map Room. "The Master Chief took a couple of steps forward and reached a hand toward the display. He seemed to know instinctively how to activate the panel--it almost seemed hard-wired, like his fight-or-flight response."

I believe this truly supports the claim in my first post, or at least a similar claim. Fight-or-flight responses in animals are inborn and thus "hard-wired" as Chief puts it. If something is inborn, it is only logical that this characteristic results from genetic make-up. Thus Master Chief's genetic code contains Forerunner genes, though to what extent I cannot surmise.

Nice observation! I like the way you quoted it. I beleive that you are also correct on your finding! In the books there are all kinds of refrences to teh chief instinctively knowing this or that!

Have you not read the first book, Halo: the Fall of Reach? You need to read that first before the next two! Also, because Eric Nylund didnt do the second book I though it was really crapier and not to the expectations i got from the first book! Keep reading though! The third book is awesome and it also mentions a lot more refrences!
