Hell, after witnessing what happened in the Flood, I really think they need the ban. I'll fight for them to have it too. In case you're wondering, a bunch of trolls got together and organised a mass spamming of the forum. Yoozel locked maybe 20 posts or more. Go Yoozel! If only he could ban the people for now...

I've never seen anything like the spamming the forums got today. It's disgusting.

Obbi, please pardon my ignorance, but what's "goatse"?

Heh, then you haven't seen anything. The spamming spree was admittedly large, but the individual attacks were quite small. Poorly coordinated really.

Thanks, Obbi. I'll check it out.
Rip Saw, if that was an uncoordinated attack, I don't even want to know what a coordinated one would be like.

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

Can you guys image a really organized attack on the forums? *Shudders* They might be able to shut down the forums temporary if there's enough of them.

Try to imagine 8+ pages of Spam topics in N. Mombasa. And every serious post was spammed as well.

I hope I didn't upset anyone?

It was hard telling the spammers from the people trying to find a way out of it.

Well, I wasn't here most of the day... But man, I come back and the forums are like a battlefield aftermath. Dead posts and wounded members littered everywhere. Perhaps there's a way to get around the dynamic IP problem, but I'm no network guru so I wouldn't know.

This is one of those things that makes me wonder why Bungie is so adamant about being involved with their community. I can almost guarantee that if I were the one developing one of the most anticipated games ever, I would not be so lenient.

I mean, these guys will be playing the game with us! And given it's incredible popularity, there will almost definately be one or two in every game. I think I'll stick with my clan, thanks.

Definitely! I'm playing XBL (when I get it) with a very select group of people (if they'll have me), and I won't just be jumping into any battle available. I think Campaign mode will satisfy me plenty if there are no worthy online opponents.
Shishka cryptically mentioned (what seemed to be) XBL consequences for the spammers--something about the gamertag link to the msn account? I hope the consequences for those responsible are equal the offense.

*sigh* No Halo fan lives close enough to me for me to be in a clan...I hope to god they have a punish team-killer option for hosts...

I think it was something about just preventing XBL account linkage on b.net.

BTW, I'm trying to get approval of a news post, congradulating (sp?) the mods on a job well done by cleaning up that spammy mess.

Oh, by the way....

Where were the mods during the attack on the forums?

 • 06.21.2004 12:03 AM PDT

bah

The mods were sitting on the toilet. Doing Bungie knows what.

As for the IP problem, there is a solution, but it's a bad one. I believe that they can deny access to this site for an entire area. Your computer connects to a local ISP. They can ban an entire ISP I believe, but then no one in that area would be able to visit.

 • 06.21.2004 1:05 AM PDT

Banning the entire block of IP addresses is possible, but as Rip Saw pointed out it would be very undesirable. If a spammer has their Gamertag linked to their Passport then we can block that and they miss out on all the cool Halo 2 Live features on b.net.
By the way, Tom has said something about giving us temporary banning powers.

You can't block individual IP addresses?

You can't block individual IP addresses?

Sure they can; the problem is that some of Mother's Little Darlings are using dynamic IPs; they don't have the same IP every time, either due to being on dial-up connections or being able to reassign their IP themselves.

Hmmm... there was talk on The Maw that HaloPC online play bans by CD product key code. Perhaps it'd be good to do something similar here on the forums? As part of the sign-up process you'd have to associate your account with a valid and registered product key... and then temp/permaban according to key instead of IP.

Though that'd [mess] over anybody who didn't have a copy of Halo, HaloPC, or Halo2... you'd have to find someway to grandfather over the Marathon and Oni crowd.

-- Steve thinks that this would at least raise the bar for spammers if they had to buy a new product key every time.

[Addition: Would it be worthwhile to send a request to the Little Darlings' ISPs asking for revocation of their accounts due to violation of the ISPs' terms of service? Any tangible penalty would probably serve in cutting down the volume... and a protest email from microsoft.com would carry more heft than most.

Probably thought of, but it never hurts to check.]

Actually, it would ONLY work with Halo PC/Mac. The Gamertag ban is the best option we have. Of course, a bit of reporting to ISPs may help...

It probably would have been, if bungie allowed embedded images in the posts. -blam!- like that happed in the RvB forums, someone got a program that put goatse, and granny -blam!- in every thread in every forum. The sponsors only forums were the only safe place. (I think my eyes are still a little reddish)
