Actually, it would ONLY work with Halo PC/Mac. The Gamertag ban is the best option we have. Of course, a bit of reporting to ISPs may help...

I am Xboxless right now (until August) and have never owned a console in my life, so forgive the possibly dumb question; is there a way to register Xbox games, such as for warranty purposes? If so, using that registry might help.

-- Steve thinks that he may have just asked a dumb question, but the only really dumb questions are the ones that go unasked.

  • 06.21.2004 8:15 AM PDT

You can register your Xbox, but only some of the games. But you don't need to for a warranty.

Image Spam....

That's the nastiest type of spam out there mate. I heard a very long time ago, GameSpot was hit with such an attack, since then only people who pay for a full time membership can post imbeded images in their threads. I gess paying for an account is a good deterent, but it must have been bad for that to happen...

But that mass image spam attack (I heard it lasted about a couple of hours) did happen right?

That's what one of my friends said...

It seems to me that these individuals don't like the moderators. But that doesn't change the fact that they're Bungie and Halo fans, right? So why not have someone from Bungie, instead of a mod, someone who doesn't normally post, come on the boards and ask everyone politely if they could refrain from such acts. It probably won't phase them, but maybe they'll react to someone who they respect, like Jason, or Max. Like I said, they'd probably go right on spamming, but this idea wouldn't take much time or effort, and it could get through to them.

  • 06.21.2004 3:57 PM PDT

Sketch is from Bungie. And that didn't work.

I know Sketch is an employee, but I was thinking more along the lines of someone high up, such as Jason. I know that I respect him very much, and I think it's a result of seeing him in all the video interviews and such, I just think he's better known than Brian. But anyway, you're probably right, and it's not even worth it. Damn spammers.

Sketch'll be after you with a rusty knife and a few ninjas now.

:O

It's nothing against him, he's a good guy. And he kicks Frankies ass at Halo 2. It's just that when you see video previews or features of Halo 2, who do you see? It's usually Jason, or Jaime, or one of the other top dawgz. I think that might have an impact on the spammers, because while they don't respect the mods, I think they still respect Bungie.

Damn, now Frankie's gonna send the Ninjas instead. :'(

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

And I thought the trolls were getting bad in the old B.net.... Guess I was a little too short-sighted to see what they're really capable of...

NO! Nonononono...

Now that that's out of my system let me say why this is a bad idea.

Many of the spammers wouldn't care. They're into it for their own kicks, and asking them to stop is like asking us to stop talking about Halo2 until it's released. That's just not going to happen, no matter who asks. All it would do is turn up the heat when they do spam, as the well-meaning but ill-informed netizens take offense at the dullards who ignore such a noble request. And start flaming. Giving the spammers exactly what they want, an audience. *sigh*

Worse yet, some of the spammers would care, very much, because it'd be attention from On High... their ultimate buzz. They'd just go harder because they'd know they've got the attention of Someone Important. They'd escalate, and it'd get MUCH MUCH worse.

Besides, Jason's too busy spending his employees' salaries. On World Domination, of course.

I saw the best was to combat a spammer last night. This one -blam!- made a thread, when you opened it, it said PEN1S 15 million times. Everyone just started talking about Halo 2. Hehe, I even saw a post, asking the spammer to shorten their post, beause they didn't like scrolling down every time they refreshed :D After 3 more PEN1S posts, he gave up, and left.

I have one... but it has the minor impediments of being so illegal and immoral that the Webmaster would blanch and ask for antiemetics.

Well said. Maybe some great Bungie employee(aka Sketch, Frankie, or Achronos) will find a way to stop the Flood-like spam infection.

Spammers are a SAD breed.

I agree that reporting the IP's and the times of the Problems could be a good way to get directly at the spammers and there internet accounts. This worked very well for the music industry, they found out which ip's were registered to which users, and how many songs they downloaded, and then proceeded to sue the heck outta people. ISP's will be used to giving up IP info if they truly are breaking the ISP's rules of proper internet use.

Oh yeah, forgot, Give the MODS temp banning, that would be good.

As i saw the whole build up of events leading up to the spam attack, i can tell you right now that it was unbelievable! New Mombasa had 11 full pages of spam at one point and some really good threads were ruined. What was even more worrying was that it looked at first as though the Mods weren't online, it kept going on and on and on! Some quite disgusting things were said aswell, luckily Shishka and Yoozel did a fine job clearing up the mess. I'm not sucking up to them but the 3 of the Mods all rock, sound guys indeed!!!

I agree, and I hate when I compliment them, and automatically I'm a suck-up. It's ridiuclous to be made fun of for appreciating someone else doing their job. You guys do a good job, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

actually shishka was lying when he was associated ban's on xbox live. Bungie doesn't control xbox live, microsoft does. and microsoft wont like losing money because people are "spamming."

call me whatever you want, but I am constantly reporting crap to the mods. I hate to see this place shut down cause a few ruined it for the rest of us.
