Subject: Good job, folks.

-S

When the immature squad hit New Mombasa today, a great number of you did the right thing and messaged me (I'm sure stosh and yoozel recieved messages as well). My inbox had 23 new messages when I got on! Great work.

However, some of you seem confused as to what is the right thing to do when spammers raise hell. Here's a quick go-over of proper anti-spammer etiquette:

Do's:

1. IGNORE THE SPAMMER
2. Message SketchFactor, Achronos, Frankie, or one of the mods.
3. Wait patiently for the mods to come and clean up the mess.

Don'ts:

1. Reply to the spam in any way shape or form.
2. Start new posts or polls that have anything to do with the spammer.
3. Message the admins and moderators more than once. Keep in mind: You're not the only one to notice the spammer!

You'll note I put "Ignore the spammer" in bold. This is because of what a spammer is. A spammer's entire sense of purpose lies in angering the forum members and moderators. So, by replying to them with demands, empty threats, or even polite requests, you're confirming that the Spammer's goals are being achieved, and encouraging the spammer to continue. The same goes for starting a new post, such as "Do you hate this guy?" "This guy should be banned," or "Petition to get this guy to stfu." Not only are you telling the spammer "Hey, you're doing a good job, keep it up!" you're also contributing to the spam by posting more off topic threads to the forums.

Keep all this in mind the next (inevitable) time some immature brat comes across the forums. And for those of you that did attempt to alert the mods, thanks. =)

Thanks guys, really follow these simple rules, it'll save alot of time by not thinking up threats.

bah

You guys really need a better way to get messages. Maybe a shared mod mailbox would be good. That way, we only have to send one message, and once it's taken care of, the other mods don't find a mailbox full of links to locked posts.

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

Still though, problem solved. Thanks a lot guys.

The problem will never truly be solved. As long as there are people, there will be spam. We can thin their ranks, however.

I think stricter control over members should be enforced.

.net accounts for members should be kept on record at bungie.net for the staff and .net should keep records of peoples phone numbers and address's so that repatative offenders of mass spam attacks can be banned from the .net network.

I suggested a mod inbox, with us alerted whenever there's anything in there. That way you don't have to worry about who is on.

It must be irritating for you mods to recieve 20 messages all about the same thing. Good thinking Rip about that Mod inbox.

Another reason beiong a mod can be a bad thing. Oh, well. Hey, Rip Saw, Shishka just basically re-did this weeks spotlight at Newb World. I really learned alot about reporting spammers with these.

Anyhow, Shishka, the alerting doesn't bother you at all? I've been reluctant to bother you with such things unless it is of the outmost importance for fear of filling your inbox. So you're telling us to alert you of everything? No matter how small?

I also happen to have a question for Yoozel. I noticed that you closed my entire (I have to speak my mind) thread because of one person's comments. I don't think that it was fair to close that thread because just one person was being an ass. Couldn't you have just edited his post?

We try,

I agree with the alert the mods button or somthing... Although, sending a message will have to due for now..

I noitced that the 7th column sites have a feature that show which members are online, maybe we could have a place to show which mods are online, that way we don't have to msg three (soon to be six) different mods for the same problem spammer?

Just another idea.

  • 06.21.2004 12:35 PM PDT

Correction - soon to be seven.

If I was bothered by the alerts, I wouldn't commend people for it, now would I? ;)

The mod alert button idea is a great one, but right now it doesn't exist, and so the best way to make sure we know there's a problem is to let us know directly. What we should be alerted about is in the eye of the beholder, really. If you think the moderator's need to know about a particular thread or person, then by all means, let us know.

One thing I WOULD request of future alerters, though, is that they include a link to the problem thread that they are reporting. There's a lot of posts on New Mombasa, for example, and simply saying "There's a thread on New Mombasa" is like asking me to pick out the most wet drop of rain in a storm. Please remember to include an URL with your report. Other than that, all is shiny.

I don't think it really matters. It's not like any non-mod can get access anything.
