At some point in the process of making the first Halo animals were taken out of the game enviornment. There was no civilian population because the first game wasn't on a planet; rather, it was on Halo. Do you think Bungie is looking at adding this type of dept to Halo 2? I personally hope so. Halo 2 would be so much more of an escape from reality if you had contact with civilians in the game. It would add another layer of realism to the game... and I understand that there is a point when things get to real, but I don't think this would be to much.

Update:
By civilians I meant non bada$$ marines... women, children, the elderly, the sick, etc. Everyone will undoubtable have arms in hand. I'm just saying that everyone doesn't have to fit into the "I'm trained to kill" perona. A little variety would be nice:)

I believe that if a group can make a game as real as possible, they should.

News to me!

On a couple of screen shots (As in Zanzibar for instance) there are pictures regarding animals. In Zanzibar, there is a "No Swimming/Beware of Sharks" sign. In another Multiplayer map, there is a "No Dogs Allowed" sign.

Halo was originally supposed to have animals on the ring, the old MacWorld video shows things walking around that look like apatosaurs. I think they were removed to curb the temptation to shoot them...

Zanzibar is on Earth, a planet, while Halo is not a planet; rather, it's a space weapon. What I was trying to say there is, there was no human population that one could interact with on Halo... Halo as in the first game:)

yes i've seen the original halo trailer with the dinosaur things on the ring, it was a shame they we're removed. i think its definatly a possiblility that we will see civilians and pets and things in halo 2. but most people if you think about it will be in hidden bunkers, fleeing the planet and (this is the most likely one) conscripted into the UNSC as marines as a last ditch effort to get every man woman and able child armed to the teeth to repel the covenant invasion.

I would love to have animals and people! I'm no ass but sometimes I just can't resist the urge to kill civilians.

Dog: *bark* *bark*
MC: "Shut up you stupid mutt!"
Dog: *grrrrr* *bark*
MC: "OK. Fine. You wanna do things the hard way?" (pulls out battle rifle)
Dog: (Perks ears up in confusion)
Bang!!
Owner: "What did you do to my dog?!?!"
Bang Bang Bang!!!!!!
MC: (walks away whistling)

They would have to put a neural feedback phase into the armor - a self destruct if you shoot a civilian.... No I think the covenant shooting civilians will cause the bug up Joe Lieberman's ass to swell to colossal proportions....No Civilians for us...

No they wouldn't have. This was a surprise attack on Earth. We didn't see this coming. Life was probably perfectly normal until a giant tear-shaped cruiser appeared out of slipspace and began glassing the planet/people (ouch)! I doubt the would have been able to train billions of citizens in the event of a covenant attack. Not only because of the rick of being killed in the process, but because of how muich time it would take.

Imagine: if the economy continues as is there will be about 20billion people on Earth. That is a -blam!- load of pepole. First you have to worry about finding these people on islands,in jungles, etc. Then you need to get translators to tell them how to fight/shoot. Finally you would have to give them full training. That take a lot of time to do all of those things.

Definitely add civilians and animals. But if you kill them you should fail.

mastercheif177a a lot of what you say is true and realistic. however if history has taught us anything its that in a similar situation training wouldn't be an issue, we would give everyone a battle rifle show them a picture of afew covenant (if that) and tell them to defend themselves. Fighting would be the only option.
A good fictional example is in two towers on lord of the rings when king theoden has everyone able to defend helms deep. it doesn't take long to do this so, many (obviously not all) people would become recruited into the UNSC over afew hours.
also if you read fall of reach it says that the UNSC has nearly conscripted the entirity of the human race due to their grim situation (and this is before earth is invaded)
so civilians should be in halo 2 but they would be rare, probably afew mothers and very young children

actually masterchief 117a your points would be wrong here are the reasons

there will be no surprise attack on earth cos since the covies have found every other human colony why not earth?
the humans knew that the covenant would find earth sooner or later that was why the cole protocol was established. its function? to DELAY the covenant

remember in e3 2003? bungie said that humanity has been fortifying the cities of earth for a long time

and lets not forget the population of earth cannot be 20 billion because a vast majority of troops would have been sent away to fight in earlier conflicts the ones left on earth would only be the remanants of humanity
