Ok, so here's the deal.
I have a camcorder that I use frequently, I transfer these recordings to the computer and expect to edit them, however, the Windows Movie Maker program doesn't recognize the movie file as anything (why is that?).
For now I think it's just because of the movie file format, it's MPEG-4. So far neither Windows Movie Maker or muvee autoproducer is able to import the files. Does anyone have an explanation to this? What do I need to be able to edit my movie files into a full video file with music and effects? If I need to convert the MPEG-4 files into WMP how do I do that?

If anyone could help me with this it'd be most appreciated. I'll check back every now and then for any answers.

Is it a digital camcorder? If so, I am assuming you are using an IEEE 1394 port to import these, which would mean you are capturing them with a certain program. Usually, you can do some basic editing in the capture program, but I don't think it works too well. I have used Ulead and Adobe Premier, and I find that Premier is a good program for editing movies. I haven't tried Movie Maker, so I cannot help you with that.

Thankyou for you help. It is a digital camcorder. From what I know of I used to have a cd that installed the U-Lead program into the computer (it's on the really slow laptop I own), but for some reason it got lost and I can no longer find it. Despite the fact that Windows Movie Maker cannot edit video files, I just want something that can.

Depending on how long your video is, you will need a lot of HDD space. The capture process can easily take up all of your memory. If you start dropping frames, just stop the capture.
