Hello all,

Ive been playing Halo: PC for years and it has worked fine. Now, after a recent re-installation of XP and subsequent updates, Halo self-terminates, has graphics freak outs that lock the computer up tight, and has flickery and or speckled screens.

The setup is an Asus A7n8X mobo, Athalon 1.5Ghz CPU, 2gb ram, ATI Radeon 9600 vid card, and direct x 9.0c

Any ideas??? The only new program am running compared to last time is McAffe security suite.

McAfee sucks, try disabling it before starting the game. And make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

Try reinstalling Halo.

That's everybody's excuse for everything. Reinstalling Halo only fixes the problem if it's Halo itself that's the problem.

3rd reinstall, no fix. No way to fully disable mcaffe w/o uninstalling it...

updated drivers only make problem worse.

Maybe the graphics memory got corrupt or something?

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Wow,. too bad Microsoft support sucks.

When was the last time you blew the dust out of your case, might be overheating on you. Just a guess.

Try reverting to the original set of drivers your video card came with.

Funny you mention overheating. The fan on my ATI card crapped out not too long ago, and I just replaced it with a off the shelf fan that didnt fit right. The guy said thermal tape would work just fine. I am doubtful.....

Under normal load (windows) the graphics are fine. under ANY additinoal load, as in the Sims 2 (gf's game), and halo (OLD GAME, should be EASY!) the thing dies a freak out death...

original drivers have been tried and do not help.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

The cheap-ass fan is probably the problem. Back a few years ago, my father replaced the fan in my PC for a -blam!- $5 one God -blam!- knows where he got. Point being, my PC acted like a dumbass for three weeks. Surprising enough, my pop doesn't know squat about good quality computer parts, yet he can code anything.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

Did you install the chipset drivers for your Asus motherboard after you re-installed XP?

Oh yes, otherwise much more than Halo wouldnt work.

I'll re-install them and give it a try though.

It's the thermal tape. It works in some situations, but if you expect to actually cool a card while it's processing directx, it's not going to work. Get some real thermal paste.

The thermal tape is usually fine if you don't overclock. Don't kid yourself. He said he replaced it with a fan that didn't fit and that most likely is the problem.

Yeah, a "universal fan", fint, Nvidia, ATI, etc etc.

NOT!!!

Its a nice looking copper fan setup, but i cant see how tape could conduct as well as direct contact w/paste

Well the tape they apply to quality products isn't really run of the mill plastic tape you use to tape pieces of paper together. It's designed to have some thermal transfer properties.
