Subject: The Power of Spam.

bah

Yolego, feeling a bit insignificant tonight :)
Hey, you came on here, used you know-it-all personality to look like an ass, the when faced with the facts, promtly started kissing ass. I can not tell you how adequately this sums up my life. No, really. I say crap that gets me in trouble, then I proptly blame others for giving me false info. Like that time that I... Um... I probably shouldn't share that info online. The jury still hasn't been picked... Just like my chapter still hasn't been approved.

Although you got off to a somewhat rough start, you were speaking intelligently, using great spelling, and were speaking of ways to improve this site. I already like you more than half the people here! Welcome to Bungie.net!

I like this idea, because I really think it's unfair for you guys to be alone in monitoring the spam. You guys can't be here 24 hours a day, you have lives(I think...), but it is a 24 hour/day problem. Not saying I should be a mod, but maybe make some sort of system, so you can tell who qualifies to have some mod powers, even if they aren't complete. That way the spam can be controlled more efficiently, and more often.
Au contraire, we now have effectively 24 hour coverage thanks to the time zones.

In reply to Achronos

I stand corrected. Thank you for taking the time to explain it all to me.

I was quite foolish in assuming that simply deleting posts caused a database failure, even when that is what goweb said. Goweb is nice, but the comment "deleting entries causes database failure" defies programming logic.

I'm very sorry I came across as a "n00b jerk with l33t skilz", and I will do my very best to ensure it doesn't happen again. You guys are awesome, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Besides, spamming is something we all need to learn to weed around, for I see no perfect (or even ideal) solution on the horizon.

;)

Again, I am very sorry, and I hope all of you will forgive me.

- Yolegoman

Don't worry about it. It's a very good bet that he didn't mean for that to be meant as something personal to you, he's just flaunting the tech of Bungie.net, when compared to what you thought you knew about it

Don't feel bad though; he's just an Achronos :)

I think you'd make an alright mod barron. A little harsh on the n00bz sometimes, but no more so than Shiska. And really, they deserve it most of the time.

  • 06.22.2004 6:19 PM PDT

Believe me, I have tried to be a lot less harsh as of late. Only thing that bothers me is when someone attacks someone else who can’t defend himself or herself very well. That still gets me a bit angry every once in awhile- probably always will.

I have a huge problem with reverse-flaming, I get so pissed when people start up trashy commentary I can't stop arguing with them.

bah

See, and that is where you fall into their trap.
By flaming back, you play into their hand.
They set the bait, and you took it hook, line, and sinker.
They dug a hole, you fell in.
They trolled for fish, you snagged their line.
They set up a net, you got caught.

Basically, they said a bunch of stupid stuff to get a reaction out of you. You, in turn, reascted. This positively reinforces their behavior so they are more likely to do it in the future. Also, future non-response on your part will only lead them to try harder since they know you will respond. Welcome to Hell...

Thank you, I've been chastised already though. It's a hard habit to break but I think I am doing a little better.

Ditto, but the White Knight flame is just as futile as all the rest of the flames despite its good intentions. (That's the style that got me into trouble in my Usenet days before I Learned Better.)

The best solution, I'm guessing, is to PM your support to the victim and ask that they refrain from responding. It sucks, yeah, but it sucks the least and for the least amount of time.

Actually, I've been trying lately to message the guy who was flamed and give him some uplifting advice. I've tried messaging the flamer and that usually results in me blacklisting him because he feels the need to spam me. ;-)

Banshee: I've tried that as well many times. In fact, one person decided to tell me I was going to 'hell' because I did not have his beliefs of religion and the such. It's a shame people cannot be open minded, and willing to cooperate.

You have a very good point. If people were as you wish the world would be a much better place. It's sad to see people so stubborn sometimes, especially when you know they are wrong and you can't get through to them.

But when you think about it, they probably think we are just as stubborn as we think they are. *sigh*

Ugh. Messaging the flamer is usually a bad idea, but I suppose that there are times when it's worth doing. (Perhaps if the flame comes from a misunderstanding or ambiguous phrasing, or something like that.)

I have, in the past, offered to lend out my idiot-sensitive sunglasses. That seems to have shown some success.

I think we have so few moderators because the moderators need be especially trustworthy. A system with a whole lot of moderators and some higher-level moderators to police them would become nastily inefficient on a forum this huge. We would need several levels to have as many moderators per user as on smaller forums AND have the moderators properly managed like on smaller forums. Lots of jerks would play nice for long enough to gain moderator powers if there were enough that one could do great damage before being noticed and dealt with.

Back on topic, we are investigating several "creative" solutions to the various idiots on this forum. None of them include "banning by IP" or any such silly term you guys toss around. You can't ban by IP, since IPs aren't tied to a user. No, we have a few extra tools for mods coming, and a special superuser tool, and a possible policy change or two. All of which will be carefully considered and tested before release and won't impact anybody who isn't a jerk.
My curiosity is killing me now...

I like SilentHunter's warning system idea, it might greatly lighten the load borne by the moderators. I would also like to suggest giving moderators the power to revoke some users' ability to warn and making the whole warning system private so it can't be used to make people look bad.

  • 06.23.2004 5:12 PM PDT

Don't worry - the mods will be organised. Soon™.
