If anyone is wondering. I lowered myself down from here

Making a rough estimate, but if you went off there and touched the ledge, then moved off the ledge without moving it looks like you'd land right around where I did in my video...

I'm trying to make sense of it, but it's very confusing. I swear, if I have to, I will go back and test every ledge drop in that area.

Just use the Stalker's cloaking to assassinate the Chieftain the normal way. It practically generates the same results as the glitch, only you can't use cloaking later.

I refuse to make the same mistake 3 times. Next time I will do it properly.

It's actually becoming harder for me to tell what's riskier:

Potentially dropping down in to a death barrier

or

Running in to a half-circle of enemies, killing their leader, and running back to cover.

I've noticed that only after a certain amount of time has expired with Cloaking on can you pick up equipment. Probably around the same time you start becoming visible.

If not for Jew man's two deaths due to that trick, I'd say the first one was the better move...but until I can figure out if the death barrier is still active and where you can bypass it...

It's kind of like...solving a problem, and testing it about ten times and always getting the correct answer. But when someone else does it, the result is different and then you find yourself unable to repeat your work.

Edit: I've got myself saved just before the Brute Stalker room. I'm going to test every possible thing I can think of that is related, though I should say at this point I do have an idea of what might be a possibility.

I got some interesting results. And I'm saved at a point that I can continue testing, but the first variable I tested was one I knew that would have the death barrier there. I killed all the Stalkers and left the Jackals. Died while falling.

Next time, I killed everything. Went upstairs and landed safely.
Worked a third time.

Fourth time is where things got interesting. I decided to see what happens if you don't touch the ledge. The result: you live, but take some fall damage. Big deal, seeing as the Chieftan is right there...unless you had low shields.

Fifth time I did the same as the fourth, but aimed my fall so I landed on a sloped surface. No damage.

So, just to quickly double check...Jew man, at any point did you circle around the upper floor of the Stalker room and get closer to the door the Jackals came through? I think that may be a factor, so I'll look in to that. I recall that during my run I did go down to the floor they were on to grab one of their Plasma Pistols.

Nope. I went downstairs and killed them both with Flame Grenades.

  • 09.21.2008 1:54 PM PDT

And you didn't at any point get close enough to that door for it to open due to proximity? Hm.

I'll go do a quick test to see if I am on to anything. This time I'll kill the Jackals without going too close to that side of the room.

Edit: And just for kicks, before I do that, I will let the Jackals live and go over by that area on the second floor and go try to complete the drop. Maybe the Jackals aren't even relevant to that death barrier...well, of course you would actually want to kill them so they don't get in the way when you come back up.

I also think I may have found a way to test where a death barrier is. I think [active] equipment gets destroyed upon touching a death barrier. I'll try to drop a bubble shield down there.

Alright, so...it looks like I hit the nail on the head. I left the Jackals alive and just went around so that I heard the door open. Went back upstairs and dropped down without bothering with the ledge. I survived.

It looks like that door is the true source of the problem.

Edit: I just did another test on it to make sure it wasn't just a fluke. I tested the variables again and proved that you do have to open the door. As soon as I get the chance, I'll be posting up the remastered version of the S.L.A.S.O. Trick video. Just to prove it still works and clarify what must be done for the death barrier to be gone.

If not for the slight misunderstanding and the fact that I hadn't shown myself being down in that room by the open door in the original video, you would've had it the first time around. I cut off some of the video to get to the relevant bit.

Perhaps it is my ego that doesn't like my technique being discouraged for being far too risky. I'd say to give it another chance, but I can understand your skepticism.

I'm confused. I thought getting too close to the door locked the one upstairs.

That's a good point. Perhaps getting too close and opening the door after that one locks the Cartographer door?

I think that may be the case here. As long as you go towards it via the upper floor and see and/or hear it open, the barrier will be gone. Even if you leave the Jackals alive.

Check out the video when it is available.

He can't and no, there aren't. There is Cloaking, but that only lasts 12 seconds, the last two of which you start becoming visible again.

Edit: If you're talking about the Floodgate video, in some cases, yeah, if you hurry you can get past them without being noticed.

...but that's just Floodgate. In other levels, that will not go so well.

Widely depends on the mission and the battle. Take Cortana's reactor room for example. After you detonate the reactors, the pure forms seem to not pay any attention to you. In "Hell's Hallway" I used cloaking once I reached the end where all the combat forms rush you.

Seemed to me that just about nothing in the reactor room fights back, save for a few Combat Forms and a certain Pureform who loves to set up camp while you're getting Cortana.

What is the update jew man?

  • 09.22.2008 1:01 PM PDT

Hard to say if there is one. I don't know if he's been on today.

I'm still waiting for Gamevee to come back and tell me that the grab it was working on failed or something. I removed the video I was having it upload, and I can cause it to cancel...so I have to wait on getting the new version of that trick up.

No rush, dude.

I also need to renew my Bungie pro. Since I touched at least one item on my file share after it expired, I ran out of room. I can only get one or two of my SLASO runs in there without running out of room.

Edit: Just saw a topic on the forum mentioning the new achievements are up. I'm looking through for the skull achievements or other interesting tidbits.

Edit #2: Found them. There are seven achievements related to them. One for each of the six skulls, and the seventh is for finding "all the hidden skulls on the Mythic maps." Which should mean there are six maps in the Mythic Map pack.

I like the icon for the Vid Master Challenge: Annual. It has the Iron Skull and four little stars next to it.

You can even get a look at the symbols on the six new skulls.

Hey as long as they don't effect campaign, I'm happy.

  • 09.22.2008 6:32 PM PDT

I don't think they will. Besides...what's left to cover? The only skulls that didn't make a return from Halo 2 are: Anger, Assassins, Envy, Ghost, and the [blank] Skull. There were a total of 15 Skulls in Halo 2, 13 in Halo 3.

The new additions were Fog and Tough Luck.

...can you imagine if the Assassin Skull was in Halo 3? Invisible Chieftan with a Hammer...invisible Sniper Jackal...ugh...

I don't think it's possible that they will effect campaign. Maybe they'll effect the new maps in a similar way the filters do in the Legendary maps?

  • 09.22.2008 7:06 PM PDT

My theory is no skulls added to Campaign, but to the next map pack.

Assembly Skull ---> New map called, "Assembly"
Orbital Skull ---> Map with codename "Moonbase Alpha"

That leaves four other skulls: Sandbox, Heretic, Citadel and Longshore. I think these skulls will just be hidden somewhere far, far out of reach (for gameplay purposes) in each map. This implies that the next map pack will have 6 maps (since you'll be able to get all 6 skulls when the next set comes out). So I guess if Legendary beats Heroic, since the Legendary maps were way better, then Mythic beats Legendary, since we get twice as many maps. Also, since we'll probably be able to get these new achievements soon, that would imply the next map pack will probably come out soon too.

Just a theory. Btw, I bet the forum ninjas are going nuts right now, lol.

Not to mention that usually the name of the skull or icon on it represents the effect.

Ugh. My mind just made a bunch of connections, but after thinking it through, it wouldn't work out correctly. I'm just going to assume they have no effect.

While we're talking theories, wouldn't it be convenient for the Mythic map pack to come out on the 25th, the anniversary of Halo 3's release...?
