Review of The Ark

This is more than likely the most difficult level I faced. Not just because of the heavy vehicular opposition, but also because of its over all length. First off, you start with a human sniper which is near useless in SLASO. Fortunately in the first battle, you'll encounter three sleeping Grunts. If you're careful, you can can assassinate all three without raising alarm. 3 dead Grunts = 3 shiney plasma pistols. Hand your sniper rifle over to a Marine with an assault rifle. Then trade off the AR for a plasma pistol. If you want just a little more backup, you'll notice a second sniper rifle at the top of the little side cliff near your Marines. If you want, you can hand that one off to a Marine as well. Fortunately for us, this first battle is relatively easy.

Here's my general approach to any open-area battle. First take out any Jackals wielding carbines or beam rifles. The carbine Jackals will eat through your non-rechargable shields quick and can do it from decent distances. Fortunately, none will show up until the end of the first major encounter.

Next on the list is Grunts. With catch skull on, they are nothing short of plasma chucking machines and can be even more dangerous than the Brutes. With the Grunts, one head shot is all it takes and they'll typically leave a much needed plasma pistol and grenades behind.

Next we move on to the Brutes which will now be much easier to deal with since most of their backup is now six feet under. Pick up a plasma pistol, charge it, and use it to bring down the Brute's shield. They won't recharge like yours, so take your time from here. I will say though that having them NOT shooting at you works to your advantage though. You can use this opportunity to assassinate them as they jump for you, allowing you to regain any shields you may have lost before hand. Yet another reason to save the Brutes for last. Alternatively, you could just follow your plasma charge up with a single BR burst to the head.

On a side note, one stick with a spike grenade will generate the same results as a charged plasma shot, and one stick with a plasma grenade will usually score you an instant kill.

The Hunters made the second area rather complicated since I have yet to find an effective tactic for killing them. In SLASO, your best option is to simply avoid the Hunters altogether as best you can. For the second battle on this level, use the steps I mentioned above while avoiding the Hunters and you should be fine. Just make sure you are always aware of their whereabouts.

The first vehicular encounter can be rather tricky and timely. Here's what I tend to do. Once your Marines raise the alarm, the Brutes will leave the crashed Pelican site. While they're distracted, make your way over to a Mongoose and start driving. Yes your Marines will die, but serves them right for TKing me in The Storm! Stay in the middle so that when the Prowlers show up, they'll soar over you rather than beside you. In this fashion, they won't be shooting at you until its too late for them.

As soon as your over the ledge, ditch the mongoose and jack the stray chopper riding around below. Any shields lost in the previous encounter will recharge, and you'll now have an offensive vehicle. You'll have to do this quickly before the backup arrives. Now take your time and use the chopper to take out all opposition on your path.

Use this method all the way up until you reach the caves right before you enter the AA wraith area. You can actually use the chopper to take out the regular wraith from the cave. Because you're so far away, it won't move very much. That vehicle is your biggest threat, so once it has been destroyed you can take your time with the Ghosts and Brutes. On a side note, if you have a quick finger you can pulse the trigger while you're in the chopper, making it shoot much faster than if you just held it down. This can turn the chopper into quite a formitible weapon. You can use the chopper to destroy everything in the area, including the AA wraiths, though save them for last.

Once the Dawn arrives, trade up your chopper for a tank. The next segment is a no brainer. Use the tank to decimate everything. When you get to the Scarab, you can actually position the tank on one of the hills so while the Scarab can't really shoot at you, you can still shoot at it. Using this method, use the tank to blow off its back, then the generator inside.

From here on out, you'll have the Arbiter and Marines which can do most of the work for you. Any Brute encounters you face from that point can be dealt with the standard way. The only real exception is the last battle. Use the camo wisely, assassinate the Chieftian for invincibility, and plasmas + inciniary grenades can make quick work of the jumppack Brutes.

And that is The Ark.

Review on The Covenant

Starting off, the level is far easier than The Ark. You have weapons better suited for then environments ahead and you gain control of vehicles almost right away. This level is divided into three primary segments and there are relatively simple ways to deal with all three.

When you first start out, you have a Spartan Laser and a BR. While your first instinct may be to engage the Grunts ahead, it's far easier to make your way to the wall on your right and stay against it while moving down the path. Most of the enemies won't even notice your there say for a few Grunts near the Pelican which can be easily BRed. Next start heading up the path towards the first tower. You'll notice the abscence of the Shade turret as well. As you move up the path, Keyes will cut in and let you know the Pelican is inbound. At this point, the game has killed the AA wraith and surrounding enemies for you. Time to back track. Head back the way you came. By now, the Shade will be up, but dealing with the few Jackals and Grunts is relatively simple. Now head to the warthog and give your passenger the Spartan Laser. He's very good at using it, and as long as your careful, you can use this arrangement to destroy nearly everything all the way up to the first tower. Just remember to keep your distance from both the Wraith and the Prowlers once your laser guy begins targeting them. For now, keep the laser outside and make sure you enter the tower with a BR, a plasma pistol, and active camo. Engage it as soon as you enter and go left. There will be a stack of Covenant crates. Jump on top of them and into the rafters for easy access to the lift. Once you get to the top, BR/PP combo the Brutes and save the Chieftian for last. It'll take a few BR bursts to kill him. Take his invincibility and hit the tower switch. When you take the lift back down, switch on your invincibility and rush through the door past all the new Brutes, Grunts, and Jackals. Once you're outside, they won't bother you.

Now trade your PP for the Splaser and head down to the hornets. There will be a Marine standing next to one of the Hornets. Give him your laser and make sure he hops on the Hornet's side seat. Keep your distance from the Banshees and destroy everything in the sky. Once you reach the third tower, you can use the hornet to eliminate all the ground forces as well. Now that you have the Arbiter with you, he can do most of the work. Also, pickup a bubbleshield from one of the downed Brutes. Also equipt a BR and your Splaser. When you enter the building, immediately go left. Jump up on the small ledge and grenade jump to the rafters. Your shield will be down, but Arbiter will temporarily have the drones distracted. Toss the bubble shield down to the lift and hit the button. If you do it quick enough, you'll drop it just seconds before the drones catch on and start to swarm. Now switch to your laser. When you get to the top, target the Chieftian. It will take two or three direct laser hits to bring him down (it took me three). Then use stickies to eliminate the first to camo Brutes. For the next use spike grenades. When their shields are down, melee them to get your shields back. Now hit the switch and exit the tower running past all Flood.

Remeber, in terms of the Flood it is easiest to melee the Brute forms and stalkers with little fear of retaliation and easy shield regeneration. The elite forms, however, have energy shields and won't simply fall apart when you hit them. If you encounter tank forms, just avoid them all together. When you exit the tower, jump into the tank and let the gauss hog go ahead of you and proceed to blowing up everything that the hog misses. When you get to the Scarab battle, ignore the hornets and find a position out of sight from the Scarabs. A Pelican will usually distract the one on the right, making it turn around allowing you to blast the rear and then the generator. With the second one, use the tank to blow off all of the onboard opposition, then the legs. Once the Scarab is breaking down, board it and take out the generator.

The last segment is surprisingly easy. Still got that Spartan laser? Good. If you haven't wasted any rounds at this point you should have at least two shots left. Use them to eliminate the fuel rod Grunts quickly in the first area. This will allow your tank Flood to survive. Between them and the Arbiter, they will mop up the rest. Once the enemy is dead, trade off your empty laser for a fuel rod cannon and move into the next area. Use the fuel rod gun and/or plasma pistols from the last area to blast off the Brutes' shields. Arbiter and the Flood will take it from there. Also, use the fuel rod cannon to counter the fuel rod wielding Grunts on the far side. The last area is a given. Just walk up to the platform.

Coming back, stay back and let Arbiter deal with the Flood and use your fuel rod cannon to blast the ones coming out of the door. In the next area, an army of sentinels will arrive to deal with the Flood. Let them do it before moving forward. Same with Area 3.

And that is The Covenant.

On a mroe serious note, congratulations...SLASO looks more annoying than fun for me.

It has finally been completed. My quest for SLASO has come to a close. All nine levels are complete. Now that the need is done, I realize that the number of SLASO players are surpisingly few. I'd like to change that. Now that the quest is complete, I would like to use this thread and others to help others complete the quest as well. This was the game Bungie meant for us to play and more people need to take advantage of it. Throughout the day I will begin posting more tips and tricks on how all of you can begin and complete your quest. A few pages down I've already posted a Tsavo Highway walkthough, which I consider one of the trickiest levels due to the layout. I also offer tips on how to make it through the motor pool on Crow's Nest which I consider to be the Cairo Station Hangar 2 of Halo 3.

I will also be including a video walkthrough shortly with voiceovers to give you helpful suggestions and options.

I'd like to thank my team (Shrine) for being so patient during my abscence. I'd also like to thank the LASO community for offering excellent tips and pointers to help me get through this. And finally, I'd like to thank everyone in the community who has been supportive and cheering me on. It means a lot and now I'd like to help all of you achieve the same.

Longest level took roughly 11 hours total. That was The Ark. The shortest was obviously Floodgate and only took less than an hour with all of the restarts.

How are you doing with the Halo level?

Yes but that doesn't account for all the offline runs ahead of time.

If you are having trouble with the hammer jumps, use grenades instead. You can melee the stalkers to get your shields back.

Remember that first jump with the hammer you need to be facing away from the the tower. Withthe second jump, face the tower, drop a plasma, jump before it explodes, then swing the hammer for an extra boost.

Wow, I have nightmares of trying to do this, but I plan to give it a try. One level at a time and backing away from Halo to regain my senses. lol.

That Iron Skull is my most feared enemy. I don't even mind the melee to get the sheilds skull, just the Iron. Cortana would seem impossible with the IRON skull on.

The Ark is the most difficult. At least you can just run through Cortana. Plus you don't have any vehicles to deal with.

On Halo, head right to the edge of the ledge on the left side of the tower. Theres a little bit there thats slightly higher than the rest, but still very close to the tower. Stand on that, facing away from the tower, jump backwards toward the tower, and swing your hammer while aiming slightly down.

A crouch at the top of your jump might help as well.

Truth to what this man says. I've seen it done in a vid. This gets you up there unharmed. Though I couldn't pull it off thanks to my butter fingers, so I just used a grenade :-P

In the first hall, use pistols to take out the Grunts. Also, one of your Marines has a BR. Swap out your AR for it. With the Grunts down, swap out the pistol for a plasma pistol and combo kill the Brutes and Jackals, though I still prefer to have the Brutes charge so I can assassinate them for health.

Do what ever you can to keep the hog alive. It will help you tremendously in the next area!

Side Note. Most people don't seem to know this but you can open the blast door that leads to that first hall (technically the second inside door). This will allow support from your Marines rather than you trying to sneak around from the halls on the right.
