Subject: My Quest for SLASO (Updated 5/22/2008)

This is just...insane. I'm about to enter the Ops Center again on Crow's Nest. I cannot begin to summarize the obstacles I've had to overcome...but I shall try. I have been running out of ammo at the worst of times. The Jumppack Brutes...one with a Carbine and no more shields, and I run out of Carbine ammo when I need to headshot him.

In the end, I was forced to use a Brute Shot to kill him...I fired at a Fusion Coil right beside him. From there I eliminated the two stragglers and began my venture to the Ops Center, taking the only Carbine I could find. I fought my way through, low on ammo, low on grenades, using every small thing to clear the way...just trying to save my Carbine ammo for those last two Grunts...I made it up to the Snipers, Plasma Pistoled one to death...and nearly the other, but he ran to safety. One Grunt and one sniper...and no more clips for the Carbine. I fired a shot at the Jackal...missed...fired again only to hear a dull click -- he had me pinned. I eluded his sight, getting closer. One frag, two...no luck. I used my Camouflage, and assassinated the Grunt. It was either the Grunt or the Jackal, and I had picked up two Plasma Grenades!

He spotted me as I hit the Grunt, and I pulled back to safety, strafing out to throw the grenades. He dodged them one after the other and pinned me down again...and all I could do was laugh. I waited...and crept out through a small opening, hiding beside the truck. He put his weapon away...and began to patrol. I rushed forth from the shadows and struck as he walked...I have come this far, and outwitted them all. I will not falter here.

/story

Continuing: I had a brilliant idea. It was working well, but not perfectly. I misjudged the range the Grunts might throw from...or, how far away they want to be at minimum. One wasn't far enough away to do so. The other was, and his grenade came in to the hallway and I was caught close enough to the explosion. And to think...this was my first attempt at the level in this way.

I'd like to have the Mythic title under my belt. I'll probably only try one level though.

I run out of Carbine ammo when I need to headshot him.
Reminds me of my first Mythic run on The Storm when the last Hammer Chieftain in the level chases me with no helmet, 2 meters away from me and I hear the epic click.

Also what is the easiest level on Mythic after Floodgate and Halo?

Apparently it's Cortana although I'm stuck there because the lack of friendly AI is really a loss you feel although you take it for granted throughout the rest of the campaign.

Well, last night I had one more run at Crow's Nest. This time, things went a hell of a lot better. I got the Invincibility from the Chieftain, cleared the Jumppack battle in about five minutes, and had a full Carbine. Got to the Ops Center, reactivated the bomb...

I killed two of the Grunts that come from the exit and the third threw a Plasma Grenade. I dodge it and it explodes, magically triggering the fuse box right next to me to explode. That killed me. I had full shields before that, and I sure as hell was far away from that Plasma Grenade. Bogus death much?

Cortana isn't difficult, but there is a large amount of unpredictability in the enemies and what weapons they have.

What part are you stuck at?

I can usually make it to the return to Hell's Hallway without any hitches, although as you said unpredictability can mess stuff up sometimes. Anyway, usually I get back to this point and stick to the right and run but I always seem to get shot down from behind seeing as I'd rather save my Active Camo for later.
Once I quit at that point and tried to start again but forgot to restart the mission and loaded it up at the checkpoint before dropping into the hallway strangely I managed to get to the end of the mission like that, so technically I've completed Cortana on SLASO just not on Mythic.

So as you can see the frustrating part is knowing that I can actually do it but the circumstances being different each time.

Oh and bad luck with Crow's Nest, I think you'll finish it soon.

It's actually a pretty close tie between Cortana and The Storm. Cortana's strong points are the following:

1) Plenty of the "right" ammo.
2) Flood-based enemies.
3) Lots of opportunities to recharge your shields.

Weaknesses include:

1) Lack of AI support.
2) Unpredictable enemies (locations & wields)

Strengths for the Storm are considered:

1) Plentiful AI Support.
2) Arbiter + Rocket Launcher makes the second half of the mission a cakewalk.
3) Predictable enemies.
4) Lots of BR ammo.

Weaknesses:

1) Covenant-based
2) Tricky shield regeneration.
3) Scarab.

From there it's really about which mission tailors more to your specific combat style.

I'd say use the Camo to get through there. You can't really sneak through the huge cluster of enemies in the Projector Room, and the Arbiter should be distraction enough at Pelican Hill.

Well I did try The Storm once and I made it to the first Wraith without any problems only for a Grunt to object to me hijacking it. Otherwise I think I could manage it but I'm really stubborn, I've started Cortana and now I want to finish it.
Besides once I get Cortana out of the way I don't have to stare at Flood biomass all day. I'll finally get some variety.

I think if my next Cortana attempt fails I'll just switch to The Storm for a while and see how it goes. Thanks for the list of pointers and good luck with the next mission you do on Quad Mythic, the vids are good to watch.

EDIT: To Vincent, I suppose you're right about the Arbiter and his Flamethrower being a good enough distraction at Pelican Hill so I'll take your advice and use the camo. Thanks.

The Storm was 10x as hard as Cortana was for me. I had a lot of bad luck though, it happens sometimes.

I finally got past the scarab on The Storm. I was unable to shoot the back off with the missile pod though so I started spamming it with the pod on the right which made it move to right hand side of the map. From there it was easy to jump on from the crane. I had a little dance with the brutes and was lucky to survive. After that I killed arbiter but failed to make him pick up the rockets so I waited until you get the Cortana bit to try again. The problem was that the Cortana thing wasn't a checkpoint so the marines pooped on me....

When you are fighting a wraith, once you have killed the turret then it is useless at close range. just make sure you avoid the boost.

What are your thoughts on hijacking the aa wraith on the covenant?

Well, I finished my Misanthrope run of Crow's Nest. That will also be made available for viewing...soon.

Wait until you go through the room with the Cortana moment and wait for him to start standing still at the end of the hall.

The A.A. Wraith, quite simply, isn't worth the trouble. I've tried and succeeded in getting it on multiple occasions. If the Banshees don't kill you, the Ghosts will.

Vince, once you've done your current challenge. Fancy trying a few missions without a single melee? Its possible, you just have to be very careful and try to take as little damage as possible.

Can I still use the Gravity Hammer for the purpose of Hammer Jumps?

Don't use it on an enemy and you should be fine I guess.

I just realized something. My Sierra 117 may qualify for not only Hamma-Jamma, but I unintentionally got Blind Mortality. I totally forgot about that.

Alright, I've tried Cortana again and used the Camo at Hell's Hallway so no problems there. Then upon moving to the projector room again I practically killed myself by being excessively cautious, it seemed that I overestimated the number of Flood in the room so I allowed myself to get swamped. Luckily I managed to save and quit just after my death so I reloaded the game to the point before my death and went Rambo on the Flood. Amazingly it orked and I managed to make it to the pelican again, Arbiter was more than sufficient at that time.

So in short I now know exactly what to do and providing that I don't fall afoul of lady luck I should be finishing Cortana sometime soon.

Just don't save and quit in your real run.

I made a kamikaze run in S117 with 2 Pistols, fun as hell until I found out that Pahat Pojat did the exact same thing with one pistol -.-

The pros and cons of the Arbiter using a Brute Shot on Sierra 117.

Pro: He can actually knock Sniper/Carbine Jackals off their perch or kill them for you in Sniper Forest.
The explosion from the Brute Shot can knock grenades off of their trajectory, possibly saving you from a stick.

Con: The Arbiter shot in my direction when I was trying to get a melee.
The Brute Shot may knock an enemy closer to your location.

Could you not give him the Brute Shot then cower behind the nearest rock which happens to be out of his range while letting him pulverise everything that moves? After that you could just go in and clean up anything still alive.
Not as easy as it sounds. He stays back all the time and when he gets hurt, he falls back for cover.

Good point. I noticed that myself when doing my Halo run, I sort of had to persuade him to fight whereas on Floodgate he saw some other Elites and ran in Sword swinging desperate to kill the Flood. Well maybe there's a different weapon he could use?

On my floodgate run he stayed back at the end i had to persuade him.

Halo 3 Mythic Conqueror #11
ODST Mythic Conqueror #2
Reach Mythic Conqueror #2
Halo: CEA Mythic Conqueror #1
Halo 4 Mythic Conqueror #1

I've been trying Cortana recently as well. The furthest I got was about 3/4 up through the spiral staircase room. I've found Pahat Pojat's method to work rather well for me; grab bubble shield for use in projector room, camo after legging it through hells hallway, but when I get to the spiral staircase room, I sort of have to wing it, which either works or doesn't. Due to Brute flood jumping up in front of me knocking me back, the stalkers got enough time to go ranged and proceeded to weaken me as I went further up, which in turn allowed a lucky elite form to get a kill on me.

I've found it easier each time though, I just need to try and speed through the place as fast as possible, avoiding any major conflicts.

And on a side note, anyone ever happen to get two or more tank forms appear in pelican hill at the end of the room? Half the time they just happen to appear, and coupled with the 2 carriers, I have to try and avoid both the carriers and the flailing tank forms which often ends up bad.
