D'oh. I killed the Scarab, but one of the Grunts on the Plasma Turrets on the side decided it wouldn't be fair for me to get away.

Edit: Not bad for my third or fourth try. Lol.
Nice. Keep it up and you'll....never make it, I mean keep trying, and you'll eventually make it =)

I went for the Triple Play medal, and what do you know...I got it.

Tsavo, Storm, and Floodgate. And all are Misanthropic runs, no less.

The Storm was a bit of an oddity. At the very end, I used something I didn't know about until I watched Pahat's Storm run. Tyrant was also in the party, so he saw it as well. It takes two overcharged shots to destroy the A.A. Gun. You can even range-shot them with the proper timing.

Back to my story, my first volley was timed incorrectly. I charged my second volley and fired with the correct timing, watching the shots converge and connect with their target...and right around that time, I hear the quick three-note trill that signifies a stick. I heard the grenade explode, and the gun began to break apart. I activated my Invincibility right around when I heard the beeping, but I'm almost positive it wouldn't have been in time, and yet I didn't die. It's worth a replay to me, because even if I didn't get stuck, it should have killed me. Perhaps the cutscene itself makes you invincible.

Anyways, as I've been saying since the 7th, I'll get those in my File Share when I can.

Edit: I reviewed the footage. I had no shields. I did get stuck. I played it slowly, waiting to see when I used my Invincibility...I could even tell my thought process at the moment, watching myself jump in an attempt to get away from the grenade if it were by my feet...and then it exploded. I watched the explosion dissipate and checked. The Master Chief wasn't even bleeding. I checked what the status of the A.A. Gun was when I was enveloped in the explosion and could see parts of it falling off. I think that once the A.A. Gun has taken X amount of damage and can take no more hits, it is considered destroyed. You are invincible after the A.A. Gun is destroyed.

It's possible to do that Overcharged shot from the start of the AA Gun area, you just need to time it right at get them both on target. I've never been able to pull it of, but I use it to finish the mission as fast as I can.

Ok, in Cortana I'm having a little trouble. Whenever I rescue Cortana and exit the room, I always seem to get flanked by several ranged forms and a few PR elites. I set up defenses similar to those in tyrants vid, and I have a bubble shield for protection.

Ok, scenario time:

I walk out of the door, deploy bubble shield and check both sides for enemies. There are a few ranged forms on my right as well as a few PR elites. On my left is a tank form. I try to toss a nade at the ranged form and I get gunned down by the PR elites. What would you recommend I do to try and take out the ranged forms and the elites? The tank form is not a major threat at this particular point.

On average that outcome occurs, on other times, a needle/PR elite and a brute shot brute will be on my left, but it is often random.

This is the only part I'm stuck at. Also, considering it's also the furthest I've made it into the level, I don't like having to constantly repeat myself if I die so any advice/tips are welcome.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

Well i now know what it is like to get to the end of a level and die:(

I got to the end of the tsavo highway after my 4th go the first three goes were me trying to do the begining and the 4th i got up to the downed pelican and died in my wraith due to trying to rush as i had to go out and i died by a brute shot and i don't care what people say i think that the Tsavo highway is easier than the storm my reasons being.

1: Lots of marines
2: you get a wraith
3: Fuel rod + marine = win
4: warthogs are near invincible with marines
5: no scarab
6: don't need to fight much

I personly think the tsavo highway is extremely fun on mythic and easy this might be due to me spending most of my time playing this mission which i have done 100's of times and know where each enemy will be and how many.

Tip: When you get to the wraiths take out the 1st one, leave the 2nd one useable and finnaly when you have the other one to take out and don't have the PP then go up the ridge you use to take out the turret make it see you and go back down, go to where you take out the gunners and go behind the 3rd wraith and kill it this is just for safety if your PP runs out this plan does work and i have done so in Halo 2 and 3 if you have a question please ask.

That bit is probably the second most annoying part of the mission, personally I just use some Incendiary Grenades to deal with the Ranged Forms in the middle structure. As for the other forms surrounding you, you want to sort of taunt them into close quarters; the corridor you come from is a good place to try this. Once the Combat and Tank forms are down focus on the ranged forms with grenades.
After that pick up one of the two Camo generators and go to the middle platform, kill everything then jump over the Deployable Cover set on the walkway below the secret skull before activating the camo and killing the Ranged Forms. After that all you need to do is clean up then destroy the reactor pylons with grenades or a Brute Shot.

Also remember that once your exit opens up a Combat Form with a Mauler always runs out so headshot him.

After that get the second Camo for use in Hell's hallway, and that's generally where I can make it before something stupid (and fatal) happens.

Good Luck.

Well it drove me partway insane *maniacal laughter*, but I finally completed Cortana. The last few mins were some of the most heart pounding moments I've ever had and it was just a rush to see myself getting further and further and somehow not dying. Anyway, it'll be in my FS soon and I've already decided that Crow's Nest will be my next Mythic run.

4 down, 5 to go :)

Edit: On the run, I had to go through a sword flood in the projector room. I hit it and it hit me about a second later and I thought I was a goner, but the almighty sword clash shone on me and I killed the -blam!- before it got me.

Am I the only one who didn't know the clash still worked against them?

Nice one. I'll get it done eventually, I just need a good time to do it, this weekend isn't practical due to it being my little brother's birthday and I've got a load of homework too. It's annoying after coming so close.
So out of interest which mission are you doing next?

He said in his post he was going to do Crow's Nest next. Personally, I think he's making a bad choice. Second hardest level, much?

Nah. It's a weekend and I'm pretty sure Tyrant is out of town until tomorrow, hence why things are so slow.

I'm going to go fix a file share problem today. Basically, I need to go get some MS points to upgrade my Silver account* to Bungie Pro, which allows me to use the File Share without it being a Gold account.

* = (If you don't have XBL you need to register an account to send in your 360 to be fixed due to RRoD. This way my case, and I gave the Silver account the same name as my gamertag on my 360...so when I did get XBL, I couldn't use my 360 account because the name was already registered. So I spent 800 MS Points to change the Silver account's name and then was able to use my current one)

Depends on how good he is, did I or did I not complete the second hardest level as my second Mythic level? ;-)

  • 01.11.2009 3:15 PM PDT

Well, it's not a medal yet...but that's not really why I'm doing it. It seemed like a good challenge.

I've defined it as the following:

"Beat the entire Campaign on Mythic without firing or using a melee attack with UNSC weapons*, even if you're not attacking an enemy or ally. Frag Grenades can be used. You can pick up UNSC weapons, just as long as you don't actually fire or melee with them. Turrets and Missile Pods cannot be fired. UNSC vehicles can be driven -- if the vehicle has a weapon system, you cannot use it, but an AI is allowed to.

* Exception on Halo: During the fight with 343 Guilty Spark, you are permitted to use the Spartan Laser."

As you can imagine, in some scenarios, specifically the beginning of most missions, this can be quite a problem, but I have concluded that it is possible to beat the beginning of every mission.

The actual word "misanthropy" means "hatred of humanity".

Nice!

Not to mention if you're under high pressure with a UNSC weapon in your hand, and a high ranked Brute is in front of you with his back against you, you have to stay cool and not press B, I sure would do it as a reflex.

  • 01.12.2009 12:59 AM PDT

Yeah, it's hard not to melee when I want to. The general run down of the level openings (up to the point you can get your first weapon that you can use) I've done so far are...

Sierra 117 - Hop over log and hop back after the Brute starts talking. Let Arbiter and the Marines deal with them. Take Brute Shot and Plasma Pistol and continue.
Crow's Nest - Proceed downstairs and head for the left-most weapons rack, which gives you a Magnum and a BR. Dual-wield another Magnum and head for the hanger. Drop one Magnum and swap one of your two Marines a Magnum*. Then give the other Marine a Magnum as well. Open the door and sit back. If the Marines don't kill all of them, you'll have to start fighting use grenades, though they have never died without at least killing one Grunt for me.
Tsavo Highway - Drive until you squish enemies. Simple as that.
The Storm - Grab a Plasma Pistol and Plasma Grenade outside before going in.
Floodgate - Proceed as normal and pick up the Gravity Hammer.

* Magnums allow the Marines to headshot the Grunts in close-quarters, but most of the time they will consider the Grunts "too far" out of firing range and will choose to spam grenades. BR, while capable of headshots, extends their firing range and has proven less effective.

Edit: Man, I thought things would be back up to speed on Monday...

Sems like you've got it all worked out, as for the Magnum thing I see what you mean, I might try it sometime because I've tried the Storm a few times before and at the start all the Marines rushed the Grunts but they can't use BRs in close quarters to save their lives (yes I did give a Marine a BR, I was hoping he'd headshot the Grunts but like you said above, all he did was throw grenades).

Anyway what is it in specific that makes Crow's Nest the second hardest Mythic mission? Would I be correct in thinking about the hordes of Brutes in the barracks and the Phantom drop in the first hangar?
