Subject: My Quest for SLASO (Updated 5/22/2008)

I actually spent a good amount of time preparing for fights.

I brought the following to the elevator:

2x Plasma Rifles
4x Plasma Pistols
1 Regenerator (yes, I juggled a Regenerator and Invincibility to the elevator)

For the Ops Center fight with the final Chieftan:

1 Renegerator from the Landing Pad

I lost one of my Cloakings while juggling it to the door...it fell off.

And I ended up assassinating both of the Armor Chieftans.

Out of all enemies in Campaign. The ones I really hate are Shielded Jackals, I dont know why. I can deal with everything else, but I just find them annoying.

I know, I've taken several pointers from his vids. He also holds the records for highest score in the metagame for pretty much every level. He plays most levels on Legendary with all skulls except Blackeye and Mythic and does them all lightning fast. Tsavo Highway in 14 minutes, Crow's Nest in 19 minutes (I think) and The Ark around 29 minutes.

Alright! Two missions left. I just beat Crow's Nest.

A while back I mentioned a strategy to make the Motor Pool easier. Well, it worked and you can see it in my Crow's Nest run in my file share. Here's the text version...

When you open the door to the Motor Pool, do not go through it. I repeat, do not step outside. Why? Because that closes the door to the Ops Center.

Now if you're wondering why you would possibly want to go back, keep the following in mind:
- All Drones from the previous area had Plasma Pistols. All those Plasma Pistols are there for you. In my video, I decided to put 14 of them inside the Ops Center and I didn't even need them all.

- There is BR ammo in the Ops Center.

So, it gives you a huge reservoir of ammunition. But that's not all!

From the hallway, you can berserk Brutes and they will eventually follow you to the Ops Center. Shield recovery is good. Just make sure to watch out for those Spike Grenades on the ground. Waste two if you want to be cautious and pick up the dropped ones.

If you don't need shields, then you force a berserking Brute in to a narrow passageway. Easy headshot.

Are there any disadvantages to it? Yeah. The Carbine Brutes are a bit of a nuisance. But they're annoying anyways. So let's look at the pros and cons.

Pros:
Access to extra ammo; less worry about running out.
Enemies will only follow you in to the hallway if berserked. No more worrying about being swarmed.
The area of the Ops Center closest to the door is relatively clear as long as you make sure to move all Marines and barrels aside, allowing for easier evasion of melee attacks from berserking Brutes.
Access to higher ground where the Chieftan can't get you. (e.g. Up on the pipe where the Thunderstorm skull is)

Cons:
Considerably less risky, but seems more time consuming to me.
Carbine Brutes can take shots at you from all the way by the Chieftan.

In regards to the Chieftan, I should note that when he realizes he can't get you, or you're far enough in the Ops Center, he will usually retreat back to the Motor Pool and wait near the truck. This gives you much better odds when dealing with him as you have an escape route which will force the Chieftan to disengage as well as the fact that if you kill Brutes off in the right order, the other Brutes won't be able to fire on you when you come back to the door to get the Chieftan's attention.

However, if you'd rather be watching a visual, like I said...I used this during my run of Crow's Nest, and that video is in my file share.

Wow that was fast! Nice method. I will use that method to complete Crow's Nest. It doesn't really matter if its time consuming as long as its safe and a good method I'll try it.

Also, I'll check out your video :)

That IS a good time, but I still beat it by 15 minutes ;)

Then again, Pahat Pojat destroyed my time, although I almost beat his record on two levels. I might go for it if I'm bored some time.

Wow, thats INSANE! The only time I came close to him was Tsavo Highway, but it took me ~5 mins to kill the final Chieftan, which cost me a lot of time. I scored a time of 25mins and he scored a time of 19mins.

I didn't really think much about the time I did the level in. Lol. During the last stretch, I was just doing what I could to keep my cool. Even if it meant thinking about what Cortana was blabbering about.

Pahat Pojat's times;

Sierra 117 - 38 Minutes
Crow's Nest - 31 Minutes
Tsavo Highway - 19 Minutes
The Storm - 28 Minutes (Exactly)
Floodgate - 4 Minutes
The Ark - 1 Hour 2 Minutes
The Covenant - 48 Minutes
Cortana - 9 Minutes
Halo - 22 Minutes (13 Minute Speedrun)

Which is just insane!

Same, I don't usually think about the times. But towards the end of a level I start getting a little shakey and etc. But I usually finish it anyway. But I think I have gotten over it, at the end of The Covenant I didn't feel a thing.

  • 08.29.2008 1:11 PM PDT

Yeah. The end of the level is always tense, and if you think too much about the fact you're almost done with it a mistake comes in to play somewhere.

Thats true. On my Covenant run I was so relived I was almost done. Then suddenly a Elite Flood form starts attacking me with a Sword! Luckily I pulled out my FRG and blew him up.

I know what you're talking about, but after you've beaten the level, the pressure's completely off...for a while, lol.

Just for info guys, This guy has some SLASO activity going on. Maybe Bungie counted him as the 2nd person? *Edit* Nevermind, this could be the guy were looking for guys.

I remember this guy. I think I heard a while back he's done every level SLASO except The Ark. Can't say I blame him, lol.

  • 08.29.2008 5:20 PM PDT

So I was just doing some practice on the Ark. I've got a pretty good feel for one of the areas that was worrying me. I've figured out the enemy behaviors for the area, which actually makes it a lot easier.

Vince, your Motor Pool method works. Except the Carbine Brutes are a pain to kill. I cleared the Motor Pool first time using your method. But I died in the Barracks.

Take my advice and practice from Rally Point Bravo several times. It's those final few fights that will be the toughest of all.

2x Plasma Pistols
2x Plasma Rifles, wasn't enough. I ran out of weapons to kill Brutes with.

I'm going to go watch Vince's video to see how he prepared. I also had to use my Invincibility to kill the first Chieftan which was annoying.

But the first Chieftan is the one who has Invincibility. Do you mean the second Chieftan? The one in the barracks?

And Starocean, that is precisely the part I was practicing.

Yeah sorry I did mean the 2nd Chieftan. Also, I'm finding the area with the Jump Pack Brutes annoying! The Arbiter always runs in with his Sword and dies straight away. I spent 10 mins today getting ready for it. I bought 2 Plasma Pistols, 5 Plasma Rifles and 2 Bubble Shields through and still died.

Yup. That's why I usually find it harder than the Motor Pool.

  • 08.30.2008 2:42 PM PDT

I guess I just got lucky with that part or something. That and the two times I did that part the Arbiter died in the barracks but revived with his Carbine.

So I've gone through the Ark Rally Point Bravo without dying about 5 times so I'm confident about that last portion.

Now I just need to get there. All of my deaths after the Hunter area have been from Grunts on a Ghost.

My latest attempt ended in the first area when I didn't double check the area. I killed the last Grunt which caused the last Brute in the area to chase me down. I finally got back to where I wanted to be, but I had no Plasma Pistol ammo. He threw a Spike Grenade, missed, and I threw a Plasma Grenade as he threw another. We ended up sticking each other.

Yeah, those Ghosts are a huge pain. The best way to deal with them is to just blast them with the Chopper from a distance, or in a worst case scenario, use the rocket launcher.

I might try equipping the Arbiter with the Plasma Turret from the Barracks. Or a Plasma Rifle.
So he can bring the Brutes armor down so it makes it easier for me.

God damn Snipers! Killed me.
I spent ages preparing for the Jump-Pack Brutes. I bought 3 Plasma Pistols and 6 Plasma Rifles. Only needed 3 Plasma Pistols and 1 Plasma Rifle. Better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
