Heyyo,

I say just get a normal AthlonXP. The preformance leap to 64 ain't super huge since it's 64 bit optimized, and most people just stay in 32bit mode anywho. AthlonXP's plenty good.

So get like, AMD AthlonXP 3000+ and a good Asus motherboard. (Make sure it's Socket A!)

Do your homework.

Go online, pcmag.com to compare, go to ebay, etc. Also, magazines and flyers from retailers (bestbuy, Circuit City, etc) will help you secure a good deal. Also, try to shop around holidays. I got a laptop for about $800 or so, and its badass enough to run halopc while shopping around Presidents Day.

Well, all I can say is he doesn't know his stuff... If he did he wouldn't slate the regulars after just signing up.

Good call! You have now marked yourself on this forum and alienated a few other members...

The elf guy has just been put into many people's hit lists...mard knows a lot.

He's right. A 3000XP is just about as fast as a 3000(64), just a bit slower. My recommendation is a Chaintech or Asus board with an Athlon 64 3000, maybe XP if you're tight on cash. That'll cost less than $260 american. On my new comp I have an Athlon 64 3200 and Chaintech VNF4 motherboard - very deadly when paired with a nice video card :D

Off topic, but what the hell...

Yeah, you usually dont insult the most helpful people. Especially MarD.

But on the otherhand, if he's new, give him time to learn the people here. Maybe his comment was rash, but that doesnt mean you pound him down for it. Especially if hes new here.

Back on topic, i have an athlon. Athlons are cheaper than, say, pentium 4s, and run faster too.

I think I'll have enough cash to finally get the basic parts of my PC cuz I'm gonna start reffing. I'm getting and AMD 64 3200+ for $195 at newegg.com.

Yeah, I got the 3200 for my new one. I'm putting a nice cooling fan/copper heatsink on it (Vantec, of course) and am going to attempt...to overclock it to 4000 speeds :o

With the help of 6 other fans and that Vantec one, it should be possible.

I own a amd 3000+xp and my dad owns a amd 64 3000+ and i see no difference between the processer power. His looks faster than mile beacuse he has duel channel ram and 2 sata drives. But his sucks cuse it has xp on it. Also if ur gonna build something like that put on something that won't suck up all the ram like win 2k pro

Oy, windows XP slowed my old Pentium 4 1.2 GHz down. Windows just takes so much damn energy. That's why I use Linux on my pc that pretty much does office work. It's cheap (free) and is not at all demanding. Only thing is, it's easy to mess your system up with it.

Basically, Socket 754 AAthlon's wont really have a performance leap over the XP's, but when you start getting into 939 and have dual channel ram, there is a slight lead - but not noticeable. If you have the money, get the 64, but if you're on a budget, the XP is still very good.

OK IM SORRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
mard im sorry *slaps himself*
i only got my new pc and i havnt been these forums in ages i was 'sum guy' b4.

BUT i have to say that the 64 amd kicks ass.
i hav both of them and i hav tested the benchmarks and amd64 does go far.
the xp itsnt all that, it may seem the same but in performance the 64 bit one rules.
the amd 64 has all sorts of crap that makes it btr. the BEST thing about it is when it comes to memory. i mean if its 64 bit it obviously has twice the amount of 'registers' if thats what u wana call em.

its has 105.9 million transistors, the Athlon64/Athlon64 FX is easily the most complicated desktop processor in the world. The AthlonXP Barton core had just 54.3 million transistors, and the Northwood Pentium 4 a paltry 55 million.

its also got the SOI technolgy(silicon on insulator) and that means the dat it transfered faster.
while a 32-bit processor can access up to 4.3 billion memory addresses (232) for a total of about 4GB of physical memory, a 64-bit processor could conceivably access over 18 petabytes of physical memory.
its aslo much better with o/c ing too, i manage to get mine up to 3GHZ with the standerd cooler where as the xp 3200 was just crap with o/c ing a increas of abt 800MHz b4 mine assed up. allthough i dont like them having locked the multiplyers like the intels.

Super PI (1 Million digits) Benchmark Results (Lower is better)
Processor Seconds
1. Pentium 4 3.2C 45
2. AthlonXP 3200+ 44
3. Athlon64 3200+ 43
4. Athlon64 3200+ Oc'ed (2.25 GHz) 40

i cant be arsed to go into more detail, bit i am sure if U DID UR research ull find it is MUCH better.

Pros for Intel:
Great at multimedia like encoding video

Cons:
High priced
Low gaming performance

Pros for AMD:
A 2.2GHz $280 AMD performs better than a 3.4GHz $480 Intel

Seriously, AMD is far better. Even if they perform slightly worse than Intels at multimedia work, the price is the killer. Again, a supposedly 'slow' 2.2ghz AMD outperforms a 3.4ghz Intel, while being about 50% of the cost.

AMD>Intel

Don't believe me? Go to tomshardware.com and look at the performance tests. My $200 AMD is 7th on the list of fastest processors, only being outdone by $600+ Intels :o
