I was playing CTF at Longest at a LAN party, which was at my friend's house. Every once-in-a-while, when someone on my team was killed by someone on the other team (and we knew it was the other team because of the taunting after every kill) it would say, "You were killed by The Guardians" when no one on the other team had this name. We though it was a glitch but it happened like 5 or six more times and it only happened on Longest. Has this ever happened to anybody else?

This will usually happen if there is a double kill, (I.E. 2 people melee each other at the same time) or if 2 people shoot a third at the exact same time, usually the game takes a couple seconds to figure out exactly what happened and who should get credit for it, but it has to put something up on the screen.
So if you are killed by the guardians, it just means that the game is confused (minor confusion) and it needs a few seconds to sort everything out.

Heres a more in-deph answer from LouisWu off the HBO forums.

"In answer to Combat_chuck: a 'Guardians' kill happens when the game figures out that you've died, but doesn't know who to attribute the death to. Most often, this is because the person killing you is already dead (and killed you with a non-delayed weapon) - the most single cause for Guardian kills would be a pair of simultaneous melee kills; Person A is killed by Person B, but Person B is killed by the Guardians.

For a long time, it was thought that this was the PRIMARY reason for Guardian kills - but some pretty respectable community members recounted instances of spontaneous dying in an open area, with no sniper fire accounted for. My best guess for these is lag-related (they were all on XBC, that I know of). Your opponent dies, but before he died he attacked you, with, say, a pistol. Game lag delayed the pistol shots to the point that when they reached you, your opponent was already dead - the game engine says "hmm, you should die, but I don't know where these bullets came from - the only other person on the map died 2 seconds ago" and attributes the death to the Guardians. "

It's when 2 people kill each other at the sme time. It says that to prevent a glich.
Shishka nows about it.
